There’s an issue with the marathon qualifiers though

They have set a cap of 80 on the men’s marathon field. That was to be made up of finishers through (a) placing in qualifying marathons, (b) those who reached a very low time (7 and a half minutes quicker than was needed for Rio) and (c) the new IAAF rankings

    Then vaporfly happened.

There is already 80 men with the time and more, like Scullion, who qualify through the placing.

It remains to be seen how they deal with a supposedly strict limit of 80 and what is likely to be 120 or so qualifiers.

Hopefully Scullion will be OK, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he is forced out

Is there 80 after the 3 per country limit kicks in though? I don't think anyone will get in off the ranking but off top of my head I think auto qualifiers probably won't be impacted. I believe Scullion's performance at the weekend knocked Felicien MUHITIRA out of a qualifying spot despite him only being ranked 322nd on the world rankings

80 in total (with a national limit of 3 per NOC)

    Qualification process:
An athlete can qualify in one of two ways:
 Achieve the entry standard within the respective qualification period
 Qualify by virtue of his IAAF World Ranking Position in the selected event at the
end of the respective qualification period.

In both cases, the maximum quota per NOC per event must be respected and the number of entries per event (in section A.) cannot be exceeded.

    ...

 The first 10 runners in the Men’s Marathon and in the Women’s Marathon in the IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019 and the top 5 finishers at the IAAF Gold Label Marathons and the top 10 finishers at the Marathon Major Series (Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York) held during the qualification period will also be considered as having achieved the entry standard.

They basically didn’t see that many get the times. The overall limit is 1900 athletes. Maybe other events will see their maximum reduced to help the marathon

Yes I am aware my point is that currently according to rankings Top 5 finish seems to supersede auto time.

Currently Felicien Muhitira is the last automatic qualifier with the 67th quickest based on time (when you exclude the 3 NOC extra's but 322nd on time overall)

There are 13 auto qualifiers prior to this weekend. Scullion's placing is the only one which will influence things and I believe this will supersede the time and eliminate Felicien.

But that’s not written down anywhere

Scullion is the only one who qualifies by placing, but doesn’t have the time

    Everyone else has the time

In the qualifying document time is listed first. The placing are ‘will also be deemed’ as qualifying

So they *could* just include the fastest 80 (with the NOC limit).

I’m only posting to suggest the possibility that this will become a mess

Surely they will just have to let increase the numbers? Recently Water Polo teams were increased from 11 to 12 with an additional sub ‘living outside the village’. There would be sum mess now if 20-30 lads that were qualified suddenly were booted out. Think of the issues with sponsors; bonuses etc. The CAS would be sitting 24/7.
I am counting him as our 47th qualifier

Technically, even if the 80 qualifiers cut-off doesn't become an issue, Scullion still isn't guaranteed his spot yet, as he could be passed out by two other Irish athletes. Unlikely, but not impossible

Well I’m counting him too. But I also count the swimmers and they haven’t got the Swim Ireland requirements yet

I’m only posting out of information. IMO it is *possible* that the IOC stick to their 80 limit and if so some will miss out

meanwhile in sailing news... Rio silver medalist Annalise Murphy started her year with a second place in the Laser Radial event at Sail Melbourne (winner is current Olympic champ). Her rivals for the Olympic spot finished 24th (Aoife Hopkins) and 27th (Aisling Keller)

Keller finished 46th at the 2019 world champs to qualify the boat for Ireland. Murphy was trying in the 49er FX boat but has reverted to Laser Radial. She’s clear favourite to get selected and could be a medal contender again

In track cycling, Ireland had some good results in the World Cup this weekend. Both madison teams finished 7th and with an OK world championships in late Feb, they should be in

Emily Kay was 3rd in the omnium. She had recently transferred from GB and was part of the madison team too

If the Madison women qualify, Ireland will also be eligible to enter someone in the omnium so fingers crossed they get over the line next month

The women look reasoably ok but do you think the men have a chance. Currently the are ranked 16th?

Ciara Mageean with a new Nation record over the weekend in her 1st Race of season. Best Opener ever Indoors or Outdoors so looks to be coming into the year in good form.

Lining up possibilities of a strong top 8 finish come Tokyo

I think they’ll go up in the next rankings and if they finish top 8 or so in the world champs, they’ll move up again

The top 8 teams in the pursuit get a spot in the madison and there’s a fair bit of overlap in the rankings between pursuit and madison. On the 21 Jan rankings if you take out those qualified from the push it rankings, Ireland is 9th

And we should move up in the rankings after Canada.

The world championships have a ton of points on offer so a good result there and we should be OK

The women are 6th when the pursuit qualifiers are excluded

Ireland are down to 10th by a fraction. Portugal overtook them by finishing 6th in Canada. By my reckoning we need to finish ahead of portugal and at lest two places ahead of Hong Kong or 4 places ahead of Austria.

Be great if we did that.

I thought Irish performances were best yet in Rio. While only 2 medals on the table but was host of top 10 finishes and personal bests and could easily have got 3 or 4 medals with bit of luck 4 years ago.

Btw hard believe it’s Olympic year already

There is actually a real risk of this happening. At the very least I would think there will be vigorous checks of all the athletes especially those from China and neighbouring countries.

The first official Team Ireland selection is Liam Jegou in C1 canoe slalom

Best Robert Hendrick (who secured the quota) in a 3 race series

FWIW the current Olympic quotas where Ireland can select athletes are

    Eventing x 3
    Show jumping x 3
    Dressage x 3
    Rowing x 7
    Sailing x 1
    Hockey x 16
    Road Cycling x 3

The Track & Field, Gymnastic, Taekwondo and Modern Pentathlon spots are for the individuals who qualified

I think Ireland have actually 4 spots for road cycling, 3 for the road race and 1 for the time trail.

I think Ireland have actually 4 spots for road cycling, 3 for the road race and 1 for the time trail.

It’s only 3 people though. The time trialist has to come from the road team (or technically from the track team if we qualify anyone there)

So so far we have earned 3 quota places in cycling (of which 1 will enter the road race and the time trial and 2 will enter only the road race)

Ryan Mullen so for the TT and RR I'd think under those circumstances, after that Eddie Dunbar given he's down for the the Giro and has time to recover but Dan and Nico are doing the tour as of now and it's finish re: proximity to the Olympic RR is about a week I think. Eddie would be our best chance of a good place I'd say.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,308 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

The Men’s road race is July 25th and the TDF finishes on July 19th

I think it’s too early to project the team but it’s definitely a climbers/one day specialist race so Dan Martin and Eddie Dunbar are far more suited to it than Sam Bennett

I don’t think Mullen will be selected for the TT. We’re more likely to just have one of the others selected for RR do it

Ryan Seaton and Seafra Guilfoyle finished 30th at the recent 49er World Championships. More importantly the finished ahead of all of their rivals ( Belgium, Sweden and Estonia) for the one remaining qualifying position for Europe. Hopefully they can maintain this when the qualifying regatta comes around in April.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,308 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

We have another qualifier in men’s marathon. Kevin Seaward with 2.10.10 becomes the fastest qualifier

Any more in the marathon and we have a selection issue...

The cycling team for the world championships is out

    http://www.cyclingireland.ie/cycling-news-item/irelands-olympic-qualification-decided-at-track-world-championships/26466

In Olympic terms our women’s madison team look OK while the men’s need to beat Hong Kong by ‘several places’ to qualify

Annalise Murphy won today’s race at the Laser Radial world championships. After a poor start, she’s now up to 21st. In the 1st race for the Irish Olympic spot she’s ahead of Aoife Hopkins (37), Even McMahon (62) & Aisling Keller (64)

When a discard is used (they can’t until round 4) then Murphy is in 10th and Hopkins is in 16th

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,308 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

3 rounds today saw Murphy move up to 5th overall. She’s 10 points off a medal at this stage but it’s great sign after being away from the Radial for so long

Aoife Hopkins is next best of the Irish in 31st

Natalya Coyle (already qualified) and Sive Brassil qualified for the final of the first modern pentathlon World Cup. Brassil was an excellent 3rd in qualifying

She’ll need a couple of huge performances in the World Cups and the May world championships to get one of the 8 places on offer through the rankings

Arthur Lannigan O’Keefe, previously ranked in top 3 in world, missed most of last year with injury. He starts 2020 tomorrow. Fingers crossed

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,308 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

Mixed day for Annalise Murphy. She finished 10th, 2nd and 2nd in the 3 races but was disqualified for a false start in the first race

She’s in 8th but would have been 2nd/3rd if not for the disqualification

    Hugely encouraging stuff

Olympics are still 5 months away. Tentative signs are that China is getting a grip on the crisis. I definitely don’t see a cancellation although a postponement until Sep/Oct is possible. Issue might be cancellation of qualifying events which could cause problems.

World athletics update their rankings every Wednesday

On the women’s side Ciara Neville got 7 extra points and is now in a qualification spot. She’s 54 of 56 qualifiers. Marathon runner Anne Marie Glynn gained 17 points but she’s a bit outside the qualifiers (and it’s unlikely there’ll be any from the rankings...)

Neville (100m), Phil Healy (200m) and Michelle Finn (3,000m SC) are in qualification spots

On the men’s side Mark English lost 25 points but he’s still ranked in the qualifiers. As is Leon Reid and Marcus Lawlor in the 200m and Thomas Barr in the 400m H

So if qualifying ended today Ireland would have an athletics team of 14 individual heading to Tokyo

Olympic boxing qualifiers seem to be on in London, anyone with a list of the Irish competitors?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

Brendan Irvine the only Irish boxer to book his place in Tokyo before a halt was put to the tournament last night. Kurt Walker the only surprising casualty, looks like he came up against a decent German (russian born) opponent and lost a very close contest. Walker still has a final qualifier to come in Paris, though when or if that happens is all a bit up in the air obviously.

I very much doubt the Olympic Games will go ahead in Tokyo not in the summer anyway and if they do they will be on a much reduced scale.

Absolutely. I presume that any athletes who have already qualified for the Games will still be allowed to take part in 2021, assuming this crisis has eased by then, or will the whole process have to go back to square one?

The hope would be that the qualifying period just extends 12 months and those already qualified retain their places - some of it might depend on the sport though.

I can imagine something like the recent boxing qualification event in London could have all the results voided (as only some of the event was completed) and they all need to go through a qualification event again, whereas other sports (like diving) hadn't had their final qualification event yet so they will just be rescheduled for 2021 presumably.

In other sports (like swimming) where there are set times, i imagine the window will just extend to June 2021 instead of June 2020 - but we'll need to wait for FINA (and the other relevant International Federations) to clarify

Totally the right thing to do. Athletes would have gone to the 2020 Olympics totally unprepared and in a state of extreme anxiety.....probably terrified of contracting the Coronavirus whilst they're at the Games.

Next year's Games have the potential to be a great one, assuming Covid is on the retreat.

I was just coming on to post that - I wonder how it will work for the likes of boxing where they were halfway through some of the qualification event. Will the boxers who had been knocked out of divisions that didn't finish be allowed compete again; or will it pick up from where the event in London was stopped?

They say they'll have a definitive date for the Games in three/four weeks too; this is needed as none of the sports can plan their 2020-2021 seasons without this information
