    FWIW the current Olympic quotas where Ireland can select athletes are

    Eventing x 3
    Show jumping x 3
    Dressage x 3
    Rowing x 7
    Sailing x 1
    Hockey x 16
    Road Cycling x 3

    The Track & Field, Gymnastic, Taekwondo and Modern Pentathlon spots are for the individuals who qualified

    I think Ireland have actually 4 spots for road cycling, 3 for the road race and 1 for the time trail.

    It’s only 3 people though. The time trialist has to come from the road team (or technically from the track team if we qualify anyone there)

    So so far we have earned 3 quota places in cycling (of which 1 will enter the road race and the time trial and 2 will enter only the road race)

    Ryan Mullen so for the TT and RR I'd think under those circumstances, after that Eddie Dunbar given he's down for the the Giro and has time to recover but Dan and Nico are doing the tour as of now and it's finish re: proximity to the Olympic RR is about a week I think. Eddie would be our best chance of a good place I'd say.

    The Men’s road race is July 25th and the TDF finishes on July 19th

    I think it’s too early to project the team but it’s definitely a climbers/one day specialist race so Dan Martin and Eddie Dunbar are far more suited to it than Sam Bennett

    I don’t think Mullen will be selected for the TT. We’re more likely to just have one of the others selected for RR do it

    Ryan Seaton and Seafra Guilfoyle finished 30th at the recent 49er World Championships. More importantly the finished ahead of all of their rivals ( Belgium, Sweden and Estonia) for the one remaining qualifying position for Europe. Hopefully they can maintain this when the qualifying regatta comes around in April.

    We have another qualifier in men’s marathon. Kevin Seaward with 2.10.10 becomes the fastest qualifier

    Any more in the marathon and we have a selection issue...

    In Olympic terms our women’s madison team look OK while the men’s need to beat Hong Kong by ‘several places’ to qualify

    Annalise Murphy won today’s race at the Laser Radial world championships. After a poor start, she’s now up to 21st. In the 1st race for the Irish Olympic spot she’s ahead of Aoife Hopkins (37), Even McMahon (62) & Aisling Keller (64)

    When a discard is used (they can’t until round 4) then Murphy is in 10th and Hopkins is in 16th

    3 rounds today saw Murphy move up to 5th overall. She’s 10 points off a medal at this stage but it’s great sign after being away from the Radial for so long

    Aoife Hopkins is next best of the Irish in 31st

    Natalya Coyle (already qualified) and Sive Brassil qualified for the final of the first modern pentathlon World Cup. Brassil was an excellent 3rd in qualifying

    She’ll need a couple of huge performances in the World Cups and the May world championships to get one of the 8 places on offer through the rankings

    Arthur Lannigan O’Keefe, previously ranked in top 3 in world, missed most of last year with injury. He starts 2020 tomorrow. Fingers crossed

    Mixed day for Annalise Murphy. She finished 10th, 2nd and 2nd in the 3 races but was disqualified for a false start in the first race

    She’s in 8th but would have been 2nd/3rd if not for the disqualification

    Hugely encouraging stuff

    Great new for all the Irish who have qualified for Tokyo 2020 so far. Let`s just hope that it`s not all in vain if the Olympics are postponed or cancelled due to the coronavirus.

    Olympics are still 5 months away. Tentative signs are that China is getting a grip on the crisis. I definitely don’t see a cancellation although a postponement until Sep/Oct is possible. Issue might be cancellation of qualifying events which could cause problems.

    World athletics update their rankings every Wednesday

    On the women’s side Ciara Neville got 7 extra points and is now in a qualification spot. She’s 54 of 56 qualifiers. Marathon runner Anne Marie Glynn gained 17 points but she’s a bit outside the qualifiers (and it’s unlikely there’ll be any from the rankings...)

    Neville (100m), Phil Healy (200m) and Michelle Finn (3,000m SC) are in qualification spots

    On the men’s side Mark English lost 25 points but he’s still ranked in the qualifiers. As is Leon Reid and Marcus Lawlor in the 200m and Thomas Barr in the 400m H

    So if qualifying ended today Ireland would have an athletics team of 14 individual heading to Tokyo

    Brendan Irvine the only Irish boxer to book his place in Tokyo before a halt was put to the tournament last night. Kurt Walker the only surprising casualty, looks like he came up against a decent German (russian born) opponent and lost a very close contest. Walker still has a final qualifier to come in Paris, though when or if that happens is all a bit up in the air obviously.

    I very much doubt the Olympic Games will go ahead in Tokyo not in the summer anyway and if they do they will be on a much reduced scale.

    Absolutely. I presume that any athletes who have already qualified for the Games will still be allowed to take part in 2021, assuming this crisis has eased by then, or will the whole process have to go back to square one?

    I can imagine something like the recent boxing qualification event in London could have all the results voided (as only some of the event was completed) and they all need to go through a qualification event again, whereas other sports (like diving) hadn't had their final qualification event yet so they will just be rescheduled for 2021 presumably.

    In other sports (like swimming) where there are set times, i imagine the window will just extend to June 2021 instead of June 2020 - but we'll need to wait for FINA (and the other relevant International Federations) to clarify

    Totally the right thing to do. Athletes would have gone to the 2020 Olympics totally unprepared and in a state of extreme anxiety.....probably terrified of contracting the Coronavirus whilst they're at the Games.

    Next year's Games have the potential to be a great one, assuming Covid is on the retreat.

    Trying to get refunds now. The apartment was through AirBnb, probably will only get half of that back. Maybe Lufthansa might give a voucher to use next year. Hopefully tickets will carry over to next year.

    I was just coming on to post that - I wonder how it will work for the likes of boxing where they were halfway through some of the qualification event. Will the boxers who had been knocked out of divisions that didn't finish be allowed compete again; or will it pick up from where the event in London was stopped?

    They say they'll have a definitive date for the Games in three/four weeks too; this is needed as none of the sports can plan their 2020-2021 seasons without this information

    Re scheduling on similar dates to this year causes complications also. World Athletics Championships 2021.
