Iceland has been doing a lot of testing, they're testing everyone whether they show symptoms or not. We might get an idea soon once they have tested a reasonable number of people what percentage have Covid 19.

It could be that a lot more people have it than we think and therefore immunity (if you indeed become immune after having had it) could be more widespread. It would mean that after relaxing restrictions a comeback for the virus would at least be slower and therefore less impactful on health systems.

Hopefully it's one of those that burns bright but burns out quick.

Irish times are reporting an announcement akin to the Britisih one will be made tomorrow all non essential business to close, I have a question though what constitutes a non essential business, how about Petrol stations and the shope within, what about building sites? Roadworks? Couriers? So many grey areas.

    It’s very badly broken.

The only reason you test is so you can contract trace and isolate. People are now getting phone calls telling them they were in contact with a positive case 10+ days ago.

They’ve potentially been spreading for 10 days.

Testing is so delayed it’s almost pointless.

That said I’ve every faith they turn a corner in the next day or two and get on top of it.
The only way , then , is to have a complete lock down and test symptomatic people first, but test everyone

My daughter is a first year general nursing student, she was asked by her college to start her delayed placement this week. She decided to do her bit and show up tomorrow but I'm not sure how it will be a normal placement for her, I'm sure she'll be asked to perform additional duties. Not getting paid.

Maybe the students on placement can/will undertake some roles performed by general nursing staff so they are freed up for higher dependency requirement.

You should be proud of your daugnter for stepping up.

Would not be a surprise if all these celebrity cases of Covid-19 are propaganda , Claire Byrne doing it at the request of Government to show everyone that anyone can get it.

That's nonsense. Claire sounded hoarse. You can't fake that.

Thanks for sharing. The HSE will have to come out and do some sort of a slot on TV and give the nation advice about the home treatment of this. We know the symptoms to watch out for, we know to self isolate, we know to take fluids and o we the counter medicines. They need to come out and tell us, how bad this can get at home and when are we supposed to call for further help.

After reading this and if I can down with symptoms and a flu, I would take it as Covid-19, self isolate, do my bit and I really don't think I would be in the mood for a covid-19 test and swabs stuck up my nose and down my throat. I think I would try and get over it without testing.

That might be why a home testing kit could work, deliver then to a test centre or your GP or freepost to HSE, courier

I'm interested in learning more about the virus remaining on some surfaces for 17 days.

Was the ship cleaned and the surfaces? If so with what cleaning solution? Did the virus remain on surfaces after cleaning? .

What would ordinary flu be like on living on surfaces?

Ordinary flu normally only lives from a few hours to a day in perfect circumstances. I believe no cleaning was done. They just tested the surfaces to see if it was still present as this is one of the main paths of transmission and the longer it lasts the more chance it has to spread.

    Presumably they'll define essential.

South Korea never banned travel to and from China, even at the height of the Wuhan outbreak. Daegu was never on full lockdown, one could still get the high-speed train there without a major hassle. They termed it a 'special care zone' with a large degree of cooperation from the populace.

Singapore has had no real lockdown to speak of, just a myriad of technological and social measures to minimise the spread of the virus.

Singapore ban Chinese nationals and travellers with China travel history since end of January.

A so called lock down will need to be backed up with details obviously. The bins will still be emptied, the roads will still be tarmacked and so on.

More info coming out from diamond princess.

    Over 700 were infected.

50% were asymptomatic, with no symptoms whatsoever.

Coronavirus was found on some surfaces up to 17 days after the ship was vacated

So we're looking at high numbers of superspreaders but a high rate of herd immunity based on those findings.

Interesting stuff. Cruise ships are unique environments, I'm never sure how much the conditions can be extrapolated to general conditions.

I read a post from a student nurse earlier who has had to give up her part time job in a nursing home due to the risk of cross contamination to do the unpaid work in the hospital.

Sounds like a little compensation will be in order for cases like that.

The problem is EU didn't ban flights from China, or anyone who were in China in past 14days. So if someone from China wished to go to Italy (or Ireland), they would just transit via LHR or CDG or AMS. I know few Chinese did just that back to Dublin after Chinese New year
Locking down or quarantine of anyone coming in, plus stringent domestic testing, isolation and overwhelming social adherence is effective. Banning flights but doing little to deal with cases already there is ineffective as we've seen.

Lessons learned will hopefully see a major boost in WHO funding and research and a both continental and national protocol firmly established to deal with the next one, based on best public health advice and not political/social media whims.

Petrol station is essential, they sell petrol which is required to power vehicles.
The shops linked with petrol stations are essential, they sell bread/ milk/ eggs/ etc which is food that powers people.
Road works are essential as the vehicles that people drive need roads to drive on, although some may be less essential than others admittedly.
Couriers are essential as they deliver things to people who are staying at home and not going out so enables them to get stuff.

Building sites, well depends what they are building. Hospitals would be pretty essential at the moment.

    How many people have masks?

Dr Tedros expressed alarm at reports from around the world of large numbers of infections among health workers, which appeared to be the result of a shortage of adequate personal protective equipment

Petrol stations, postal and couriers are considered essential.

    The others I doubt.

I think the HSE should just say how many results have been processed and how many tests have taken place. It gives a good indication of where we are. Instead they say we are working towards 4500 a day when they are nowhere near that for tests , and we have no idea how many are being processed that we are getting results for. With the delays that many are claiming we might only be processing a few hundred a day but I have no idea.

I agree, actually test figures, i.e. sample processed in a lab & pos/neg given would be nice in the daily update.

Their number of confirmed cases had been low until recently. Most recent cases are from people from Europe and US.

I understand, but the poster was trying to make the suggestion that the three countries mentioned had hard lockdown measures we should be repeating. Only China had such measures and we won't be sealing people who went to Cheltenham into their houses any time soon.

The golden boy (Korea apparently) had very soft restrictions even in their major outbreak city (just massive resources deployed) and did not ban travel to and from any country (only Japanese nationals because of a diplomatic spat).

Singapore had no hard lockdown measures of any kind.
