Just an FYI for people watching the news, there is no such thing as the Dublin Mountains.

    Point them out to me?

Might help if you posted a map of Dublin rather than Wicklow

I'm totally confused now! The "official" figure yesterday we included in the thread title was 785

It was updated to 906 by another mod around 2pm today, which would explain the 1,125 figure

Possibly the figures the HSE are putting out are net of recoveries:confused:

All press releases on the site seem to be the total - yesterday was 906
They don't seem to be deducting recoveries - hell they don't seem to even talk about them at all in the briefings

How the hell can a packed country like that have so low figures? 9 per/mill, Ireland 228 per/mill

I haven't read much about any miracle system they have for having those low figures.

You don't see the Dublin border?

Do you see the 3000 sq km Wicklow Mountains National Park?

The range is the Wicklow mountains, a mountain range doesn't change name when a little bit of it is in another county.

Responding mainly because your post will get lost in this fast-moving thread. You are absolutely correct here. The number of positives is important but the figure which gets us closer to understanding how quickly this thing is spreading is:

(number of positive cases) / (number of tests carried out)

It gives us an estimate of what percentage of the population is infected.

For example, if yesterday we tested 1000 people and got 50 confirmed cases and today we tested 100 people and get 6 confirmed cases, you can see how misleading that would look of we only published the number of confirmed cases.

I do understand the difficulty of doing this and I know that lag affects the accuracy of this data but even getting the number of positive versus negative tests would give a much clearer picture of where we are.

How many tests is our figures out of and have they confirmed this?

I mean completed tests that have been ran through and come through as positive or negative.

There’s not much point in saying out 15,000 taken if 8,000 of the 15,000 still need to be run in labs

Is that how other countries record them? I don’t think so but I could be wrong.

I think it’s confirmed new cases.

Dr Holohan makes the very interesting point that if we succeed in flattening the curve, the restrictions go on a lot longer.....you're dragging out the pandemic duration so to speak
That was always made very clear. The benefit is that the ICUs aren't overwhelmed, and there are enough medics with enough time to treat people.

Again, A flu can kill anyone.

Covid-19 is tending to kill those in an older age range.

The vast majority of people who catch this virus will live.
Here's part of the reason older people are more likely to die:

And a significant portion of people who end up in the ICU will probably end up with permanently impaired lung function.

Why on earth there are still f*ckwits downplaying this is completely beyond me.

You still didn't answer my question, where does it say about public requirements to wear masks and gloves?

Instead you chose to attack me personally, namely: my username, do I deny everything, and my views on the Moon Landing... This beggars belief really. It's exhausting and petty.

So, I'm very interested to know what PPE you would propose the public to employ when they have to go shopping? What are your specific recommendations? What grade respirators would you advise and so forth? Have you passed on your advice about PPE to Health Officials?

Also, what experience do you personally have in the utilisation of PPE during a pandemic of a novel virus?

In addition, in relation to the virus being airborne, that was one study, we do not know with 100% certainty that SARS-CoV-2 is airborne.

Initially we were informed it's not airborne, then one small laboratory study (conducted under laboratory conditions) illustrated some droplets to remain airborne for a few hours. Once again, this is just one study.

You'll probably ask do I work for the Defence Forces too, since I commended Naval Personnel for providing an ideal testing base for the virus in Cork.

Thank you once again to LE Eithne and Naval Personnel who will be carrying out the testing.

Naval Personnel are well versed and experienced in the use of PPE and coping with crisis situations.

Everyone in the Country is on a learning curve, please keep mindful of that before attacking me personally and insulting my intelligence.

I don't disagree with what you are saying.

You seem genuine. I'm sorry if I offend you, not my intention. There is evidence that it is airborne. It is a respiratory disease and other diseases like it are spread in this way. It is more infectious that the flu Ro number. Telling people that masks / respirators don't work when the COULD work is disingenuous. We don't need to know something with 100% certainty to make a decision. Otherwise we would never make a decision or get out of bed in the morning.

I've family who are healthcare workers. I was appalled at the level of PPE that were given to them. I did advise them to spend their own money in the interest of their safety. They did this.

As for going shopping. Why do we implement controls at all if there is no danger. You have reduce risk and break transmission chains.

Here's some things I would think are sensible given the risk. It's a lot of work but gives you an idea of why most people wouldn't get right, might sound mental but you asked.
    1. don't go out if you don't have to.
    2. if you do have to go out go to a supermarket when it is less busy
    3. If you have a fp3 rated mask and or goggles. Wear them
    4. Wear latex gloves if you have them but don't think you are invincible.
    5. bring hand sanitizer in the car.
    6. when you are shopping keep your distance as much as possible
    7. only touch what you intend to pick up.
    8. when you get back to the the car use the handsanitizer
    9. stay in the mask as the shopping is essentially contaminated as are your clothes.
    10. when you get home remove PPE in the correct manner. youtube it if unsure.
    11. put clothes for washing
    12. have a shower
    13. sterilise shopping with disinfectant and or hot water and detergent.

Father works in a management position at the CUH. Prefabs are being installed right now to cater for more ICU beds. Old buildings are currently being renovated to raise capacity. ICU bed numbers are going to increase significantly.
