Erm, the percentage of patients in ICU has gone down because the confirmed cases have rocketed. With lag a good chunk of them are going to need care too.

I've been to Lidl today, some of staff wear masks, some not. Appeared Lidl doesn't provide masks to staff. What they did is they put tiny 15 inch wide plexi glass shields in front of the cashier (in a place where no customer ever stands, so changes nothing). The protection is a joke. Is ALDI any better?

Italy (and Spain) has a history of multi generational households. Germany doesn't.

If 20 year old Luciano gets it, he probably doesn't even know and goes home to where 70 year old gran Luda is living with his parents. Covid is so contagious, that everyone under the same roof will probably catch it.

But Luda is at a much greater risk of dying.

There are many Irish households in the same situation. We have one of the highest numbers of adult children still living in the family home, in Europe.

Many younger people are still going to work and risk taking the virus home to elderly and at risk parents. Irish houses are not build for self isolation so if it comes back to those households, the elderly parent is at serious risk.

Why is this risk factor not being addressed? We are told to contact the HSE when we have symptoms, that is too late for households where younger people are still told to work, but are living with elderly relatives. I know of cases where employers are sticking to the 'let us know when you have it' rule and don't want to know about high risk factors... people... at home.

I work for in the civil service where we are still open to the public. No masks/goggles will be provided as we are going by HSE recommendations. So I think it's unfair to criticize Lidl alone on this.

Not sure why they are waiting till Thursday but their new Veggie burger is brilliant have to say, a must try for fellow vegetarians.

Hi thanks for the tip. I was saying further up the thread how I really have no time whatsoever for the McDonald's vegetarian options. I find them exceedingly poor, whereas the Burger King options are both tasty. I'm a big fan of the bean burger, but the rebel whopper can scratch an itch too.

SuperMacs you are claiming has a new vegetarian burger and what you are saying is that it is very tasty.

Colour me intrigued. Usually if I go to SuperMacs it's the Papa John's pizza's I'm after, so my first thought on hearing about the upcoming closure was to go down and get a pizza meal deal.

But now I've got that excited feeling in my stomach due to the information you've shared.

Can you tell me, is it a fake meat style burger or a vegetable/bean burger or something different again. Thank you

    translation of first paragraph:
"The crematoriums in Madrid are overflowing. The City Council has been forced to close the municipal funeral home due to the "lack of suits and masks". The bodies, according to the municipal sources consulted, are piled up in public hospitals and in private homes. Faced with this situation, the Town Hall, the Army and the Community have agreed to turn the Ice Palace into "the great morgue" of the capital"

I know and even here I'm pretty good about it but on a street with bollards at both ends? The street in question has the British Embassy on it and is never without bollards.

Covid 19 is a lot more serious than this and the younger generation of Germans are less likely to abide by the law than their parent but this seems to be the pattern everywhere.

    Exponential infection growth explained simply.

    236589.png

This is an older graphic and doubling every 6 days for Coronavirus is out of date, the link below has graphs and doubling figures for the most affected countries today.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019%E2%80%9320_coronavirus_pandemic#/media/File:Time_series_of_active_COVID-19_cases,_most_affected_countries_as_of_2020-03-21.svg

The doubling rate and the slope of the USA graph is very worrying.

I hope most of us take heed of guidelines to stay home as much as you can and avoid other people. We can't go full lockdown here because the police are ineffective for the most part, many have zero respect for them and the abuse they receive is incredible. Imagine trying any crap with Spanish or Italian police, you'd know all about it that's for sure. They even look far more imposing than our lads.
There was a video on Twitter last night of some kind of street party in Darndale, loads of teenagers etc dancing around. What could the police even do?
Nevertheless, the more of us who do the right thing the less people are infected over time.

Concern for the Gardai from someone who believes many Gardai are 'pricks'?

More transparent virtue signalling there I reckon ...

As I posted previously, government needs to impose standards on all chains with sanctions.

Supermarkets measures range from excellent clear space marking, sanitisers etc. and staff protection, to merest gestures and no staff protection, and all combinations in between. Branch managers apparently have power to decide how to select and apply measures (confirmation of that would be appreciated).

Without believable closure threats the chains won't implement good practice across their branches.

That's not where the goods loading area and payment terminal are. Nobody stands in the front of plexi. That's the way it is designed.

That's fair enough but If they are following HSE guidelines you can't really fault them. I know a lot of staff in my agency aren't too pleased but that's the way we're being told it's going to be. If eventually the HSE advise masks I'm sure we'll get them.

As of today horse racing is still taking place.
There is a meeting due in clonmel tomorrow.
It’s behind closed doors but that’s just not good enough.
Point to points have been cancelled, but ALL racing needs to be cancelled.

Have a look at this report:

    https://www.echolive.ie/corksport/Point-to-point-racing-in-Cork-is-on-hold-with-the-season-now-in-doubt-acd6ee2c-399d-4fa5-aa6e-9d258cd0a79c-ds

The pictures tell you all you need to know.

In the first is a jockey falling, risking injury and possible hospitalisation. The chances of taking a bed or diverting resources from someone who is sick at this point in time is ridiculous.

In another are ambulance personnel on standby, resources that could be deployed to help testing and transporting sick people to hospitals.

In another you can see the utter disregard that EVERYONE in the picture has for social distancing.

Racing has done themselves no favour with Cheltenham, but we are well past the point where they are just sticking two fingers up to the entire country.
