Yeah that should be fine. But a few hours indoors is crazy.

If my 70 year old mother has to stand in the garden and talk to her grandkids through a closed window, your GF can skip drinks with her sister.

Collectively saying "be grand" is literally going to kill hundreds of people.

Met the sister and her bf for a walk. Was blown away by their ignorance. The sister said she didn't have symptoms so she's fine. The bf was joking around and pushed my gf once or twice.

    ....

Bare minimum knowledge about this is that it is symptom-less for up to 14 days. Was so close to losing my temper.

I was up the Wicklow mountains earlier. I stayed away from all the crowds, parked in a layby and went for a half hour walk following sheep trails. I didn't pass a person.

I've been in a tiny apartment all week with no outside space at all. if I hadn't gone out my GF would have had a narky Connemara Man in her life. I'm doing all the right things the rest of the time but the toll on the mind of being made unemployed due to the virus, and having no avenue to do anything is huge. I've been unemployed in the past but have always had a social outlet. That's gone now and TBH it's a struggle.

The amount of cars I saw up there as I was leaving was huge pure bumper to bumper stuff I went up and down early so I wouldn't be a person on top of another.

Went out for a walk with the dog earlier and to be fair most people are taking it seriously around here.
Crossing the road if you are getting close on a narrow path or standing in someone's driveway to let others past.

That less about social distancing and more to do with you look dodgy as fcuk!

Belgian police can fine you if you are closer than 1.5m to someone on the street; I can see that coming in in Ireland for a start.

USA with 14’000 new cases! Trump is going to be eating his words. They will probably finish on top of the global leaderboard, at least for developed countries.

I'm resigned to it happening, but I dread an actual curfew coming in here. I am basically only leaving the house to run or cycle and if I can't do that I'll go mad. I have a very small apartment and being stuck inside it all day will be horrific.

You can carry it without ever having symptoms. That needs to be communicated more clearly to people. One of the first cases was interviewed on radio there. Was skiing in Italy when the first few cases were discovered. Came back and a travel companion of his got themselves tested as they were in the health service. He then got himself tested which came back positive and he was put into isolation in the Mater.

He never had any symptoms through the whole process and neither did the 7 others in his group who tested positive. But they could have spread it hugely unwittingly if they weren't caught. It was pure dumb luck that one of their group was a nurse who insisted on being tested.

It's an incredible jump for them today, percentage wise. I'm surprised their death rate is as low as it is but that could be largely down to the fact that the vast majority of their infected have only been known cases a for a few days and might not have reached that stage of the illness.

Based on their numbers today, it's plausible that they jump to the top of that leaderboard table by Friday, even Thursday.

One of the unanswered Qs is how infectious are entirely asymptomatic carriers. But I imagine they must be at least somewhat because this is what is no doubt causing in part the rampant spread.

Assuming ICU not saturated yet the deaths will come in about 10 days. 5 days to develop symptoms, 5 days to turn bad, 7 days in ICU.

    Thanks.

It's all crap, and stressful. It's gonna be a long battle and it's gonna be a lot tougher than it is now.
And I've let it overwhelm me a bit. Everyone needs to be mindful of the mental side of it aswell.

Do you have health insurance? You can avail of counseling support through it if you have.

The mental health ramifications of this are going to be huge in the coming months. Probably the only thing Boris has said that makes any sense is that people need to mind their mental health through this time.

I do. I'll have to check on that. I'm fairly self aware to mental health issues ( lots of issues in the family) so it's something I'll be even more mindful of now after the weekend.

It's Important to talk and I'm sure I'm not the only one that'll have struggled.

It will probably be remote support at this stage, telephone or video. It can be good to speak with someone impartial though. A lot of people don’t want to worry their loved ones by talking about it and therefore just keep it inside. It’s good though that you’re aware of the possible effects.

I've muted it on my twitter, and I only really read the news once a day now. It can get very overwhelming if you're constantly checking on it.

Italy had a very positive day today by all accounts, relative to previous days. Much smaller increase in cases and a significant decrease in deaths.

They own Covidien here which makes 2 of the most used ventilator models, ramping up production to 24/7. Hopefully some of them stay in Ireland.

Anyone know how many they make a day?

There are patient trials starting on some drug in Southampton tomorrow which it is hoped might reduce the number of people requiring ventilators. Fingers crossed. Apparently the drug already helps Asthma and COPD patients.

In the short term drugs like that are our best hope.

I know you’re probably just taking the piss but you can set it up to recognize you with a mask on.

Based on twitter this morning, when students learn about this in American history they could also be learning about the descent of a president into total madness
