    Poor Spain,
Spanish newspapers are reporting that their hospitals IT systems are now under cyber attack.
    Despicable and horrendous crime.

Our experts know very little about CV.

I'll give a personal example. I have asthma which worsened after a bout of pneumonia I was hospitalized for in 2018. I get an awful lot of throat and chest infections since then.

At the end of February I was attending a respiratory consultant in one of our major hospitals. Covid 19 was taking off in Italy. We talked about it. He/she said it will be here in a week. I said do you think this has flu epidemic 1918 potential. Consultant replied no, we will contain this easily with the medication we have available. I regularly meet the consultant and would get on well. I said ah you're only saying this not to worry me. I got the reply, no, I'm absolutely serious.

Why would anyone be using a mask if they don't have SARS-CoV-2? And even then, that person should not be out in public places anyway. Masks are needed by Health Personnel and for those caring for someone who has contracted the virus. Masks aren't recommended for the general public.

 You do know people do need to leave the house and get groceries, prescriptions, the essentials.
Ask yourself why so health workers wear gloves and masks.... hmmm to stop them getting the virus maybe?. The paper masks are useless but the P3 masks if worn properly along with gloves and goggles will protect people if they follow the proper procedure when putting them on etc.

This is insane, do they seriously not even have alittle mattress(donated from locals if supply is that short..?) or some pillows for the patients on the floor?

Try explaining this to some of the Brexit cohort. Two U-Boat campaigns weren't enough to learn dem gud. It's ironic that Churchill is deified by the same people.
Now he is, but the second the war was over he was voted out. They knew then well enough. Good for war, not so good for peace and the British people wanted a change from toffs lording it over them. But yeah it's easy to forget that the same Churchill's biggest moment of worry was the U-Boats, or that Britain had food rationing up until 1954.

If the chipper in my town closes there will be fcuking anarchy...

I went for a drive yesterday to kill a bit of time. Didn't get out of the car at all. Pulled up in a town to make a phone call. Chipper open across the street. I would given my right arm (but not my life!) For a bag of chips right then. The smell of chips wafting down the street was almost too much of a temptation to resist. I had to drive away before I gave in.

And in normal circumstances I wouldnt be too much into chips at all- only when I cant have them!

The Federal Reserve has announced it is to start buying corporate bonds and it's open ended.

There is a serious scale of economic hardship coming.

As plentiful as money is it's going to become ever harder to come by!

NI seems to be doing a lot better than London. But it's early days.

You can see from the ROI data that there is very little community transmission in the border counties, presumably this holds true on the opposite side of the border. Belfast will be a hotspot though.

28, and while Asthmatic, it sounds like he would consider himself in good health.

I think this is the thing about "underlying health conditions"...it's quite a loose term.

Glad he seems to be recovering.

That refers to FFP3 masks (high particulate; expensive, and hard to come by), not standard surgery masks.
As I noted earlier C, they weren't particularly expensive. I got this pretty bloody good one for 25 quid last year long before this pox was on the horizon.

    506697.JPG

Now they're changing hands on ebay for 100 quid and over. Price gouging cnuts.:mad:

The paper masks alone do most certainly reduce the risk, if properly worn and fitted and observing the hand hygiene and distancing. But yeah the respirator types like above are significantly better.

When I see doctors and nurses in Italy and Spain and the UK dealing directly with covid patients in a crowded ward with only surgical masks it really saddens me. :( Talk about sheer unalloyed bravery.

I have been wearing gloves when out for about two and a half weeks now at this stage.

Wearing a mask also this past week.

(Not surgical one doctors need, just something to shield my own nose and mouth.)

Hey guys looking for some advice, my grandmother is in her 80s but family members are continuing to visit her house such as my uncle and his girlfriend. I'm just wondering is this okay as long as they are keeping their distance from her or should I ask them to stop visiting the house altogether?

That other poster was correct. The Benzalkonium Chloride is what's killing the germs, it's another commonly used disinfectant.

Didn't recognise that one, the next ingredient, DDAC, is also a disinfectant.

If we see say 100 or so new cases a day for the next the rest of the week which would be low is there a reason to relax some of the restrictions in place or do people still think we could see large daily increases and numbers like the UK Spain Italy. Like could the fact that the population density outside of say Dublin is so low that we don't need the same restrictions.
    You could look at Norway.

    population: 5 million
    density: 15 per Km2 /38 people per mi2
    Life expectancy: 82.51 years

    Cases
    13 March: 750 (1)
    today: 2538 (9)

So I'm confused. Is your issue with the fact they don't work? Or that we don't have enough anyway.

I'd agree with you in saying a surgical mask doesn't prevent you from contracting it but a respirator is designed to filter out particulate matter (including viruses in droplets).

Surgical mask have been proven to prevent you from spreading it to other people. We need to block chains of transmission.

Confounding the lack of supply with the science of how masks work is disingenuous. Government needs to be held to account on this point.

I wonder are the contact tracers encouraging suspected cases to use Google timelines to help identify any community transmissions?

Everyone with a smartphone and GPS turned on will have their every moment tracked and actually beneficial in this case. I could tell you my every location at any one time for the past number of years straight away if I had to.

On Twitter, I just saw someone tweet about how they're stuck in Austrailia, with the threat of being homeless because of this virus. She has been asking the Embassy for help. Not just her but, for her colleagues out there too.

Miriam O'Callaghan replies, telling her to ring Joe Duffy...

    Jesus Christ

Masks are best left to those with the virus. As for wearing gloves :eyeroll:

People just won't adhere to the Public Health messages regarding the wearing of masks.
