Same thing crossed my mind, germany and the PE going to switzerland, France blocking the masks to UK and czech's commindeering the gear from china to italy. It's no longer a union but very man for itself. I think the UK will be our greatest ally and vice versa.

And really, for all of the naysayers,

If martin mcguiness can work with Ian paisley and vice versa, then attend a dinner in buckingham palace, we can put it behind us a strike up a trade deal.

    Maybe th Netherlands will change tactic now, after cases quadruple in a week from 1,077 (20) to 4,204 (179);

High level meeting this afternoon followed by press conference
    https://nltimes.nl/2020/03/23/govt-crisis-team-safety-offices-meeting-assess-covid-19-measures-press-conference-630-pm

    Complacency there is unreal.

I speak Dutch and I just tuned in to their radio, very little chatter about the virus or what to do.

Listened to NPO 1 and they were complaining about the lack of sport on TV etc

Very different to the media here.

City markets were packed over the weekend, as were beaches. I fully expect Netherlands to be next country to have explosion in deaths.

Just read UK maybe facing shortages of paracetamol.

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8140341/Pharmacies-running-critically-low-key-drugs.html

Not a massive shock. We produce a huge amount of paracetamol here for the whole world.

    https://ie.gsk.com/ie/contact-us/our-locations-in-ireland/dungarvan/

Who would get supply if both countries need it? It's a UK company with production in Ireland. Could we sequester it if needed?

    Hand sanitiser

I just got this sanitizer delivered, said it was professional hand sanitiser.

Looking at the ingredients, does this look like it’s useless as there is no alcohol in it?

I'm no scientist but I don't think that alcohol is essential in a hand sanitizer for it to kill off everything, many disinfectants do not contain alcohol, some of the products I see around make a point of saying they are alcohol free.
I think there has been too much emphasis on the alcohol content. There are other chemicals that will sanitise.

Those pictures from Spain are very scary. I wonder how long will we be saying oh it's different here, we don't live in apartments, we don't kiss, etc.

We are kidding ourselves. The only hope we have is that we have a bit more time to prepare.
Only if the health system gets overwhelmed. Spaniards completely ignored government instructions. For now that is not a concern and hopefully our measures will prevent it getting to that point.

One of the most patronising statements to go around the media is the one that people dont know how to use FFP2 and FFP3 masks.

I am asthmatic and I use them year round for farming tasks. A 6 year old could be shown how to use one in 2 minutes. Wash your hands thoroughly before putting it on, and wash your hands thorough before taking it off. Hardly rocket science.

Why would anyone be using a mask if they don't have SARS-CoV-2? And even then, that person should not be out in public places anyway. Masks are needed by Health Personnel and for those caring for someone who has contracted the virus. Masks aren't recommended for the general public.

OK, if the worst does come to pass, you can retreat to your candle lit cabin singing rebel songs of old while drinking poitin made from a milk churn.

And I will get on with exporting our surplus to England in exchange for more power across the inter-connector that already exists.

That's quite a jump. But if you are expecting a fair deal with the tories you would be naive in the extreme. They are going to be responsible for the situation here being worse than it should. Underage football games still going full belt in the north last weekend .

That other poster was correct. The Benzalkonium Chloride is what's killing the germs, it's another commonly used disinfectant.

I think the focus on alcohol is because they advised that alcohol above 60% is effective specifically for this virus. If you google the active ingredients in the one you have with something like "effectiveness COVID 19" it should give an indication, there was a useful document i found a while back that listed products they had found to be effective, based on the ingredients.

My sister has a fever and was told to self-isolate and wait for a test in approx 10 days.
She asked will her family also have to self-isolate.
Doctors advice - “No, unless they develop symptoms”

    WTF

Silly doctor.they surely should have used their crystal ball to predict the future and tell them “all is well I tested ye through the crystal.
Now are ye medical cards or private? Ye have a crystal ball bill needs sorting”

Is that one of the chemicals that's good at killing bacteria but not very effective on viruses?

That refers to FFP3 masks (high particulate; expensive, and hard to come by), not standard surgery masks.
