Maybe its a demand thing. People are told they are non esssential as a run on them will result in a shortage for those most in need (first line medics)

It is a demand thing. Vulnerable and health care workers need them most as they’ve no choice. We how ever can social distance

Bit odd that the companies haven't bumped up their service on this one. Supervalu have no slots this week, and it was easy to get a few days ahead even last week.

Testing and tracing is the most important tool we have against the spread of it.

Do you know who told me that?

    The HSE.
And nobody said they aren't. Pretty sure my post neither implied nor suggested that. That information in my post comes from the DoH briefings. You should watch them.

No it's nonsense. Only believe verified sources such as HSE or WHO

I feel they would be very useful for everyone to wear them as people with no symptoms are actually more dangerous that people with symptoms as they are not strictly isolating.

It’s not about preventing catching it, they are useful to prevent spreading it. This is why keeping physical distance is so important, people without symptoms are more dangerous as they are walking around in our community.

Unfortunately we don’t have a good supply of these so they need to be saved for healthcare workers and rightly so.

I imagine it's an EU wide thing. We are a drop in the ocean. We could order enough for the whole country from China and they wouldn't be that bother. Try do the same for Germany or France and you start running into supply side problems.

We followed the same mental criteria as our EU partners despite the clear guidelines from WHO on how to contain this. I'd say that was supply side at EU level decision too.

We need to push back. If there are factories that can make them here we should stop all outside orders until citizens here are protected.

Germany has done this, china has done this, US have done this.

HSE need to get a grip and stop treating people like mushrooms.

    This is not the solution.......
    That’s a mass gathering ....
they are health staff surely they know better

Jeez pure recklessness times R ( rate of infection)
A well intentioned gesture that is going to backfire spectacularly

Government needs to stop Supermarkets doing this Supermarkets need to be told or helped ( army/couriers) to ramp up their delivery service. Impossible to get a delivery slot from Tesco as most sensible people have moved online.

Not really. That's the advice anyone who's waiting to be tested has been given. The DoH have also said that the numbers of contacts per case has reduced dramatically and that it is largely around family groups.

I am saying testing is one of the most important things, and the wait for results is a big issue.

Your post seems to suggest that its not a problem as everyone being tested is told to self isolate.

You are not taking into account the issues with contact tracing, is a difficult and time consuming job. By spreading the contact tracing over everyone who has been tested, as opposed to focusing on those who actually have the virus you greatly reduce its effectiveness.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 801 ✭✭✭frillyleaf

RTE have been including this line in pretty much every related article for the last few weeks and it's been annoying me too. Right from the beginning it has seemed to be more of an operational definition that the HSE was using to help with close contact tracing rather than based on actual medical risk i.e. it would be impossible for most people to remember everyone they came into contact with over 2 weeks, therefore full tracing would be impossible - give a time limit and most people will be able to give a reliable list of people.

Given the info on how the virus is spreading on surfaces and items, I think RTE should stop including this line

Yeah good looks trying to get out of the way if someone sneezes for example!

Do they have a smaller shop rather than tesco/lidl? The likes of spar or centra? They could ring in a lust and get it delivered

    Absolute nonsense
Anyone thinking this could be beneficial even for a second is ignorant of the way this is spread
Another fairy tale is if you keep drinking water you wash the virus down into your stomach and the acid kills it.Who the duck makes the up?
You either breathe in infected droplets from another person(hence social distancing) or you touch a surface that has active virus on it then you touch your eyes, nose or mouth and inoculate yourself with the virus hence frequent hand washing. This has been advised now for months

The last of the 'it is just flu' crowd. You don't need to be a statistician to know that what you said is clearly wrong, given the disparity in deaths between Covid-19 and flu.
    https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=112912030&postcount=9202

Besides which if you count up everyone in Ireland with any sort of respiratory, cardiology, or auto-immune disorder, I would be surprised if it wasn't the majority of the country.

That's not what I said. What I said is the 4 Irish deaths were people who were very very ill and had major underlying conditions and the flu may have killed them, only speaking about the 4 Irish deaths. This is anywhere from 4-10 times deadlier than the flu and the problem is how contagious it is, it quickly overloads the health system.

Give over looking for an angle, can we just all stick to the facts here.

Staying hydrated is really good for you, especially when ill.
Steam from a hot drink can make it easier to breathe when you have a respiratory infecting.
Medicated mouth wash can help reduce the duration of a sore throat.

None of these things will prevent you from getting Covid 19 but they might help lessen the duration and severity in some small way. They won't hurt and they might make you feel a little more mentally positive. So it's not bad advice to follow but not some sort of miracle cure. First and foremost, I'd say that lots and lots of rest at the first sign of symptoms is the best thing to do. Then staying hydrated and fed, even if you have no appetite.

I am not sure HSE have this situation under control. Even before the 'surge', they are way behind on the data. With 40,000 tests ourstanding and 4-5 days of lag, we really have no idea where we stand. I also think the HSE are doing too much media stuff. When you are reporting, you are not working.

Average of 4-5 days, how many people will be waiting 10 days and not show up as positive

Bit of a surge in Iran, they were below 1,000 new cases yesterday.

There was 1,028 new cases yesterday.

If there was sufficient tests available at the outset the CMO’s advice would have had a less stringent criteria for testing and more case would have been detected
All the initial measures and advise were based on lack of resources and to buy time

Save your anger and ask yourself why there wasn’t sufficent masks PPE, testing kits available? We all seen the pictures coming from China did the HSE/ Minister for Health/CMO think we would be immune?

Ask yourself why none of our media we’re asking hard questions

We had time to prepare instead we dithered worrying about effect on economy and now the HSE are scrambling to get supplies: contracts in place. The 24 hour news cycles were waiting for first case and ramping up the anxiety but still Government dithered hiding behind advise of CMO and medical experts

The CMO and medical experts all knew what was coming these pandemics are all modelled worldwide the only unknown in these models is the R value ( rate of infection). They could safely assume the R value was same as China. Question is when did they share this information with Government?

The HSE will undoubtedly tell us there hands were tied behind their backs because of budgetary constraints

Who holds the purse strings ? It’s not Paddy Cosgrove

How many Healthcare staff have caught the virus in their workplace? And yet the HSE told us there is no shortage of PPE in our hospitals

Every country is in the same boat here facing staff shortages and also PPE. Manufacturing lines closing or slowing would also add to it. Not only that, this unfolded so quickly since January. Fact is, nobody or no country would have been prepared for this and huge incoming demand.

Spain 462 deaths in 24 hours they could easily surpass Italy 😢😢

Rate of change in all of these countries is slowing down. All of Europe in fact, including the UK.

So curves are being flattened. We need to keep doing what we are doing of course.

No, I'm just stating facts and they have stated the contacts per case have fallen dramatically. The contact tracing and testing levels are not related. 4500 tests from today.

Rumors are now spreading in China's social media that the coronavirus is from Italy.

    https://www.scmp.com/news/china/society/article/3076334/coronavirus-strange-pneumonia-seen-lombardy-november-leading

A “strange pneumonia” was circulating in northern Italy
as long ago as November, weeks before doctors were made aware of the novel coronavirus outbreak
in China, one of the European country’s leading medical experts said this week.

Rumours blaming foreigners = no censorship

Anyone that has been tested, how do you find out your results? I was tested on Friday morning and haven't heard anything back. I was sure at the test centre they said my doctor would contact me with the results, so I rang my doctor and they seemed to think it would be someone else from the HSE. Thanks
