40,000 waiting is not a problem as long as they are self isolating. A test is not a cure, it is a snapshot in time that shows if someone is infected and is then used to ensure isolation to reduce spread. If those 40,000 self isolate, have the virus, and get better without passing it on, it's not really a problem.

    This post is wrong.

Contact tracing is extremely important, by having a 4 or 5 day wait the previous contacts of those self isolating are busy spreading the virus far and wide.

WHO say test test test, its the best tool you have.

Why are you saying the opposite ???? Totally wrong.

Only if people self-isolate consistently. Which IMO most people should already be doing most of the time anyway...

Given there is not enough masks for everyone to be able to wear a fresh one every few hours or every day, then they must be priortised for those putting themselves at the front line.

One can wear a mask going around their daily tasks which will help limit them spreading it if they have the virus.
But they can also achieve a reduction (to almost zero) of their chances in spreading it by staying the fuck at home and letting those frontline staff have the masks.

You posts are very dangerous. There are lots of selfish people out there who could read that, and go out and try to hoover up any available masks. I have a friend who has a severely compromised immune system and has been wearing a mask when going out for months. Way before corona. She needs those masks. Some arsehole with a bit of money to throw around who buys up 100 that they never use and leaves them to rot in a box in the garden shed increases the chances of her not having them available. She will always get them through official channels - not over the counter public routes - but the official channels still have to have them to give them to her

Get a grip. I did not say I disagreed with governments cornering supply for health workers, I actually approve of that and support it. Health workers should get first priority.

However, there are masks available to the public that the health services don't want. Governements also don't source masks for the health services from the local chemist, DIY store or retail online merchant. They buy direct from major distributors and manufacturers, which you yourself have confirmed vis a vis your friend, so cut the BS hyperbole about 'my post being dangerous'.

Some rich guy is not going to deprive the government of supply. They have powers to compel exclusive supply if they wish. There was a story several weeks ago, that a major manufacturer of masks in Limerick was ramping up production to 24/7 production, and that all of it's production was destined to fill an order from China. You want someone to rail against, I suggest you pull your head in and go ask our government why they are allowing that.

I already have a mask from years ago for DIY uses. The government telling me and others, who might also already be equipped, that they don't work, is dishonest and unhelpful and does nothing to improve their own supply situation.

Come on, they are flat our testing. Simply down to resources and scaling up to test more. Please read or listen to official news for full info on testing. Its discussed at length multiple times every day. Social media is not a news channel.

Confirmed cases from tests is currently running at 4%. With a backlog of 40,000, thats an estimated 1600 additional cases out there.
I wouid not be surprised if people with smokers cough are looking to be tested for the craic. That would be a wasted test but if they have respiratory symptoms, they have to test them.

I do watch the news for my information and not social media . All I’m asking is how quick our turnaround time is compared to other countries which is quiet a reasonable question to ask . If other countries wait times are similar to ours this is a good thing.

There is not a huge amount of detail in the Irish media about this from the start and it’s not something I rely on solely for information.

Kite flying by the British government.

They are on the exact course of Italy - they have more deaths now than Italy had at the same number of cases.

Desperation - they need to do something draconian to ensure people comply. Asking won't cut it for a portion of the population unfortunately.

Hopefully they will extend those measures to Northern Ireland as many of them are treating this as a holiday and heading off in their droves to Donegal and other counties to their caravans/holiday homes etc

What we need here in this country is legislation to force people to go to their primary homes and issue strong warnings that people not from this jurisdiction will be refused medical assistance in the event they fall ill here.

They need to change the 'wash your hands' catchphrase to 'go home and stay home'

There are fears over possible carriers without symptoms who are not counted in official figures

    https://www.scmp.com/news/china/society/article/3076281/coronavirus-concern-wuhan-community-over-suspected-asymptomatic

"But a case in Wuhan has raised concern about possible carriers who are not counted in the official figures because they do not have immediate symptoms, typically known as being asymptomatic."

"Two more cases were reported by a residential community in Wuhan on Friday, but authorities later clarified that they had already been counted in February – one patient had been discharged from hospital and the other was still being treated"

China was epicentre of pandemic. They didn't know what was going on until it was too late. Then no amount of mask wearing , hand washing , social distancing was going to stop that trajectory.

Not really. That's the advice anyone who's waiting to be tested has been given. The DoH have also said that the numbers of contacts per case has reduced dramatically and that it is largely around family groups.

The ordinary surgical masks that you see people wearing to prevent Covid-19 spread are next to useless in preventing inhalation of airborne viruses, which easily pass through it (high-particulate filtraters like FFP3 only work).
At this stage of the game however, we should all start using them if we need to go out: 1) they stop you touching your face, a major means of transmission 2) it'll show we are treating this seriously, and mark out those who aren't. People might feel silly wearing them in self-conscious Ireland, but the message needs to get out that this is far more contagious than what people think it is.
They are in plentiful supply, and can be distributed by the HSE.

They are not plentiful in supply.

Important to note that while Ireland doesnt have a huge amount of cases in total number, per capita our number of cases is still on par with the many of the other most affected countries in the world

Rumors are now spreading in China's social media that the coronavirus is from Italy.

    https://www.scmp.com/news/china/society/article/3076334/coronavirus-strange-pneumonia-seen-lombardy-november-leading

A “strange pneumonia” was circulating in northern Italy
as long ago as November, weeks before doctors were made aware of the novel coronavirus outbreak
in China, one of the European country’s leading medical experts said this week.

Testing and tracing is the most important tool we have against the spread of it.

Do you know who told me that?

    The HSE.

They aren't plentiful in supply. There is no point in using them when most people wouldn't have a clue how to put them on correctly.

Our healthcare staff need the supply more than we do, unless you have the virus it is pointless wearing one.

I feel they would be very useful for everyone to wear them as people with no symptoms are actually more dangerous that people with symptoms as they are not strictly isolating.

It’s not about preventing catching it, they are useful to prevent spreading it. This is why keeping physical distance is so important, people without symptoms are more dangerous as they are walking around in our community.

Unfortunately we don’t have a good supply of these so they need to be saved for healthcare workers and rightly so.

What the **** is wrong with people!!! So people with health issues such as asthma deserve to die or what!!? It kills people full stop!!! For that reason everyone needs to take all the steps possible to eliminate this virus !!!

Young people sent to war years ago... had to stay in wet trenches for months ... rot setting into their bones while they watched their dead friends getting ate by rats.... and here’s our current pack of useless millennials that normally can’t be got out of their house as they on ps4 and on social media... and they now all have to be out and huddled up together ... country is fuct if that’s our future geniuses ....

Everyone should take the steps...you are 100% right. It's incredibly important that we all adhere to social distancing and self isolation in order to protect as many people as we can. It's a small price to pay to save lives.

But, scaremongering and misinformation is downright wrong and is part of the problem here. We need to be informed, nobody said people with underlying conditions deserve to die, but the facts are 99% of the time they're the ones that are the casualties here. There's no point us ignoring it, if anything knowing this has helped as we know who are the most at risk and we need to keep them safe more than anyone.

Have a look here. You can find volunteers in your locality that you can request to collect things for you.
