The amount of virtue signalling going on is nausiating. People need to be careful of course bit they dont need to then tell everyone how careful they are being. Christ, a very low % will come to any harm because of this, chill people.

Get a grip SOME of us don't just care for ourselves some of us have family and relatives in the at risk group.

Self-interest ahead of altruism with that pompous chancer. Glad the Government publicly put one over him.

Every single opportunity available to them , the government should pull the rug from underneath this lad.

You said HSE in the UK should that not be the NHS:rolleyes:

No, NHS is over hospitals, HSE is over health & safety.

For anyone that wasn't listening to rte radio 1 a little earlier. Some of the main pieces.

    Coveney basically dismissing Paddy Cosgrave.
"Tánaiste Simon Coveney says Govt is actually working with China, contrary to reports saying otherwise, on acquiring equipment, test swabs and other resources."

Gov to announce more packages next week for those now out of work, some sort of salary guarantee appears to be on the table.

    https://twitter.com/WilliamsJon/status/1241714443391827968?s=19

    And finally chief medical officer

    https://twitter.com/WilliamsJon/status/1241720236807774211?s=19

Now is the time to double down on our efforts so far and make sure we do everything possible to contain this.

Chief medical officer spoke very well again

Not so encouraging if you're living with a vulnerable person.

Paddy Cosgrave is a monument bellend. Of Epic proportions .

The c*nt thinks Ireland and Dublin should have bent over backwards to accommodate him and his nerd festival .

And now he carries a chip on his shoulder.

    Exactly,
Said this on the previous thread, he wanted the Irish government to plough money into his once a year event and then when they wouldn't put money into a private event he threw the toys out of the pram and has had a chip about it every since.

In Iran's Persian new year speech the Ayatollah has pushed that it's a US bio-weapon, and China right there to agree that it may be and that the US should somehow show it's not. Can't see why Iran think that this type of propaganda is useful, you raise your enemy to such terrifying heights then I'd think Iranians would be more likely to back down rather than rise up in defiance of the US.

Coronavirus Ireland: Irishman who went to Cheltenham Festival tests positive for COVID-19

Were Irish Cheltenham goers asked to self isolate upon their return?

    Anybody know

We were saying it last week or the week before that ideally that should be cancelled but that was up to the UK to do that. Irish people going should have reconsidered their plans and the government should have introduced quarantine measures.

    .
We would be in a worse shape of the government didn't order the cancelling of the St Patricks day parades. They left it late to cancel them.

There's so much in the history books that could help us with this pandemic. Back in 1918 and the Spanish flu, Philadelphia held a parade which made the problem worse. Here is history repeating itself.

The main spreaders of the Spanish flu were soldiers from world war 1. When the war ended the spread of the flu slowed down because soldiers stopped travelling. Again, history has an answer for us that will help with this. The main spreaders with this Covid-19, are travellers/tourists.

A number of posters toward end of last thread were quoting Prof. John P.A. Ioannidis regarding % death rates, which in the overall picture is approaching irrelevance. It's the threat of overwhelmed health systems, and consequent societal impact that governments world wide are imposing massive economic costs on their societies.

    Totally agree, with following,
    ...
The most valuable piece of information for answering those questions would be to know the current prevalence of the infection in a random sample of a population and to repeat this exercise at regular time intervals to estimate the incidence of new infections. Sadly, that’s information we don’t have.
    ...
One of the bottom lines is that we don’t know how long social distancing measures and lockdowns can be maintained without major consequences to the economy, society, and mental health. Unpredictable evolutions may ensue, including financial crisis, unrest, civil strife, war, and a meltdown of the social fabric. At a minimum, we need unbiased prevalence and incidence data for the evolving infectious load to guide decision-making.
    ...
Yet if the health system does become overwhelmed, the majority of the extra deaths may not be due to coronavirus but to other common diseases and conditions such as heart attacks, strokes, trauma, bleeding, and the like that are not adequately treated. ...
    ...
John P.A. Ioanndis (evidence-based medicine, epidemiology, data science and clinical research, concurrent holder of posts at Stanford University)

In my opinion he attaches overmuch reliance for the main trust of his argument lower for a death rate % on the immediate 'Diamond Princess' death rate. He also projects that the age profile to the US population without isolating and applying the self-selection factors in DP population.

However his recurring theme is the need for randomised testing to establish base lines, and the extent, and development of infection within the population.

Which we are not doing and apparently don't plan on doing.

That private event would have involved the shutting down of a chunk of the centre of Dublin so people could go out drinking.

Waiting according to Henry. With 15000 tests a day planned that should be whittled down very quickly.

How are 15000 tests going to be done a day if 35000 tests arrived this week and 20000 due next week? 15000 x 14 = 210,000

Both Harris and Henry have said this and they seem to be confident it can be done. Fire off a tweet to Fergal Bowers!

People who (mis)use that bandwagon phrase virtue signalling must be delighted that they have so many opportunities at the moment to misuse it.

I'd love to see your epidemiological study on this very low population.

I'm 9 days on the list for a fast track swab and still haven't had it! Have no idea whats going on. Work in hospital, was in London, have underlying illness and my mam had a transplant and I'm still waiting!

They need to do random testing right now say pick 300 people from across the country and cities and test them every couple of days for two weeks then we will get a decent idea of how prevalent it is and how rapidly it is spreading . Dont choose those on self isolation but rather choose folk who have to go out to work .

In my own opinion, from a workplace perspective I would say yes, in fact I think H&S is possibly too strict over here to the point of being overwhelming some days.

To the poster who said my source is unreliable.

I am on this site years, never posted rumours about anything. You dont know my friend but as unsaid he is high up.

He usually works for the offshore division inspecting oil/gas rigs in the North sea and would have meetings on a weekly basis with govt ministers. His dept has been decimated at the moment, skeleton staff for offshore rigs due to the need for staff onshore. Even asked me if I knew anyone with a degree 2.1 or above who would be interested in being fast tracked into the HSE such is the need for people.

What's this degree thing all about? I'll help out if I can even on voluntary basis, have a 2:1 myself in both bachelors and masters, both economics and maths related.

The Median age of confirmed cases in Ireland is 44.

30% of cases have been hospitalised.

IN the UK, 3 doctors in London, all aged 30, in bad way, on ventilators.

the youngest to die in UK was aged 41.

It is random. It doesn't just aggressively attack the elderly or those with underlying health conditions. Its viral load is random.

I hate the idea of anybody dying but If a few of those saying it's only old people bite the bullet I will shed few tears.
