Good work again by the HSE, the number of beds particularly.

We were lucky this didnt hit us first, of course. We have seen Italy.

Isn't a lot of this down to entitled bed blockers avoiding hospitals though?

The types that go to A&E for the smallest thing?

So we have gone from 6 to 29 confirmed in ICU in how many days? 2?

That describes the nature of the issue perfectly.

Not necessarily, the number went to 12 in the last briefing, briefing stats on covid that we get daily are at least 2 days behind. We were steady at 6 for a good few days.

The only up to date number we get given daily is test cases confirmed.

It's gone from 6 to 29 in the space of about 10 days.

Wouldn't be surprised if that 29 included the 14 that tested positive from a nursing home. Would account for the quick rise.

For those talking about 80% mild cases, the actual line given is "mild to MODERATE", and moderate can involve being pretty ill.

I think a layman's description would be mean cases where you can stay at home and ride it out and probably not die

Number of cases in ICU is over doubling every two days. Any one who thinks we already got this should do that math.

Spoke to my cousin in London last night, my Aunty (his ma) has it and is in hospital, she's 65 and in very bad health anyway so not looking great.

Whats so sad is that his ma is all he's got now apart from extended family, none of whom live in London, and he's not even allowed to visit her

    Fucking Awesome

AN IRISH man who attended the Cheltenham racing festival two weeks ago has tested positive for Covid-19.

The man - who is based in the south - is not seriously ill and has not
    required hospitalisation.

However, he has been told to remain in strict self-isolation.

Those fcukers who went over to Cheltenham have blood on their hands. Shame on them.

Hope I'm not repeating what others have said.
Just back from my local Dunnes stores. Well managed small queue outside waiting for entry. Inside the door a table with anti-bacterial spray, plastic gloves and rolls of tissue. I sprayed the trolley handle, wiped it dry and wore gloves whole time.
Thin well spread crowd inside and fully stocked shelves. No sense of urgency let alone panic. No queues at the checkout.
    I was impressed.
I understand this is replicated elsewhere and with other stores.
If so it's another example of how we Irish adjust in a wonderful way to difficult times without a fuss.
Compare the UK headlines about how British spirits of WW2, blitz, etc is highlighted in their papers as how they'll get through this while in reality much of the population runs amok in supermarkets with a totally selfish approach.

In fairness it was only last week that there were plenty of peopke in this country (Ireland) running amok in supermarkets with a totally selfish approach.

And the percentage who actually have it out of that 40k will be quite small.

Literally anyone with a cold is ringing a gp looking to be tested

Take the numbers in context. It was steady at 6 for more than a week. Then went to 12. Now 14 in a nursing home tested positive, you can be sure they're probably in ICU.
    Sudden jumps were expected.

Just now in the local LIDL I saw some owl one telling a young lad to stand back. He replied by telling her to move forward or leave the shop. She shut her gob and moved forward. Pandemic or not, nobody has the right to boss people around. Some people like the woman here think the situation gives them the right to be rude. Spoiler alert, it doesent. I gave the young lad a thumbs up in the car park for his troubles, legend.

You are the first person since this has all started that I have thought I hope they get infected. You are a ****ing knob.

So Spain could be worse than Italy in a few days time. This is really hitting southern Europe hard for some reason. It will be interesting to see how a country like Belgium fares.

This is a chart with the age distribution for Belgium.
There the virus is hitting mainly the 40-69 age group

That's something that needs to be underlined.

    The loneliness of this sickness.

To some extent we are lucky to have phones, tablets etc.

All the best to your Aunty, a lot of us have relatives in the UK and worry for them.

I think mild to moderate means everyone who no matter how bad they feel is thankfully not in the category described here by a respiratory care worker in Loiusiana...

    https://www.propublica.org/article/a-medical-worker-describes--terrifying-lung-failure-from-covid19-even-in-his-young-patients

If half of our people got it - 2.5 million - and only a tiny 0.1% needed ICU care, that is 2500 people, it would overwhelm our health system and block people sick with other conditions from help.

I really think a sharp short shock of 2 to 4 weeks complete close down except for absolute essentials until we are better equipped with tests, masks, sanitisation supplies, machines, beds and mostly verified information, would be the most humane and wise thing a government can do. Anything less is playing hard and fast with people's lives no matter how it is dressed up semantically.

    FYP.

Just to clarify, rest, OTC medication and fluids is very good advice for mild cases of COVID-19. Just because it's mild doesn't mean that you just don't do anything for the virus as if you.dont take precautions you could end up.in hospital from an AKI etc.
Dangerous advice by the poster, really.

    Indeed....

In Italy and Spain, people are dying alone in hospitals and being buried/cremated with no family or friends present.

Is there any indication that Ireland will close its borders, especially to the UK? I believe the UK is going to be one of the worst affected countries (densely populated, poorly handled) yet we have no restrictions on movement from this much larger country on our doorstep.

I really wish we’d close the NI border as Donegal is being treated like a resort by many of them. The caravan parks are absolutely full as thick stupid northerners are treating this like their summer holidays. I don’t care if I’m being racist or whatever but fcuk off back your own country, we have enough to deal with here without you selfish stupid pricks making it worse!!!

I didn't know the nursing home bit, but as this progresses chances are even more facilities like that will be hit. So while it's a spike more spikes are inevitable. We ve seen a spike from 6 to 12 and 12 to 29 so far.

Key point: It is unclear whether the man contracted Covid-19 in Cheltenham or in Ireland.

May as well say 100s that attended shops test positive for covid 19.
