Bearing in mind Spain this time last week where absolutely in dire straits and the people of Spain knew that? And us(the Irish) where absolutely livid when images emerged from Temple Bar of people partying.. Similar images and Video footage from numerous sources still flowed out of Spain!?
I have a reason to be out and about....and I swear to all of you,.every night the last at least 2 weeks(not counting that infamous Temple Bar incident)has been like 02:00 Christmas Morning. And that's basically from when shopping stops.

I've said it before and I still think the Irish gov are pursuing a policy of herd immunity by stealth. not closing airports or cafes or shopping centres.

Pushing the social distancing mantra should be enough to slow down infections so the health care can cope but i don't believe they have any intention of actually trying to halt the virus in its tracks

Halting the virus is no longer a feasible option. If you managed to eradicate the virus in Ireland, unless all other countries worldwide managed the same you would have to close the borders. Plus if one case re-emerged, we'd be back to square one.

The only long term solution here is herd immunity, but not in the context that the UK Government were using that term recently. Until a majority of the population are immune to the disease it'll continue to circulate as almost the entire population has no immunity and liable to infection.

As time goes on, and treatments and other antidotes become available, there will be scope to increase the rate at which the population can become infected. Long term, there's also the vaccine route for increasing immunity.

QUOTE=ThomasFlynn;112911045]The USA has a population 5-6 times of many countries in Europe. By definition it should have 5-6 times the number of infected cases. If you look at number of cases per million the USA is on 79, whereas Spain is 545, Italy 886, Germany 267 etc.

Trump will be blamed for this no matter what, and absolutely he deserves some criticism, but the US aren't doing any worse than some countries in Europe, I'd argue they're doing better than the UK with 75 million now under lockdown, closing schools much earlier. Their mortality rate is also quite good for its population so far. He didn't engage in nonsense herding like Boris did. If Trump deserves blame so do a lot other world leaders therefore.

And anyone who thinks if a democrat were in charge and would've avoided the stock market collapsing, a recession and huge job losses are no more than a partisan hack. That doesn't mean Trump is the right man for the crisis right now, far from it, I'm not confident in him either.

The reason that the US is about to get reamed is because they have this pathological liar as their leader. This is what he posted TWO WEEKS AGO

So last year 37,000 Americans died from the common Flu. It averages between 27,000 and 70,000 per year. Nothing is shut down, life & the economy go on. At this moment there are 546 confirmed cases of CoronaVirus, with 22 deaths. Think about that!

That's not true. You can only make that kind of comparison at the end of the outbreak.

At the moment individual outbreak clusters are more important, so these can be compared no matter what country they are in.

Again from the BBC website, in a piece about stricter measures from Italy and Spain:

"In a news conference on Saturday night, Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez warned "the worst is yet to come" and that "very difficult days lay ahead".

The government has issued a lockdown for some 46 million people who are only allowed to leave their homes for essential work, food shopping, medical reasons or to walk the dog
    .".

That's like a joke. Walk the f'ing dog? Come on, you're either being serious about lockdowns or you're not.

San Marino is so small that an outbreak in say a single nursing home could totally skew it's statistics.

The raw data in this case is useless without context

If you compare Ireland numbers with Italys at similar points there was 41 dead in Italy. Even on February 27th Italy had 593 confirmed infected and 17 dead so 6 times Ireland's mortality rate.

That's only confirmed cases vs death.
I would imagine Italy had a lot more unconfirmed cases at that time than Ireland does now, also age may come into it.

I wouldn't be putting too much belief into the fatality rates we are seeing from any country.

Today Italy has 53,578 confirmed cases and 4,825 case deaths. This is a mortality rate of 9%. However, the death figure we are using here is a function of the laboratory confirmed cases, which is not a conclusive figure. The real infection figure in Italy is a large multiple of the 53,578 confirmed cases, however there simply isn't the resources to test every single patient every single day. Nor should they be given the pressure they are under. It's impossible to get a proper mortality figure (if ever with this volume of cases) given the circumstances and if anything repeating these figures as cause for concern is simply misleading.

The only closed system we've seen a mortality rate from so far is the Diamond Princess. From the Diamond Princess we had 712 cases and 9 deaths (with 567 confirmed recoveries). That yields a death rate of 1.26%, which is a far more reliable indicator than any country to date. Given there being 136 remaining open cases we could see this figure rise - or it could be a case that resources aren't being concentrated on closing cases.

When the antibody tests become available we'll get a truer figure into the rates of infection, and true population mortality rate. Until then, it's anybody's guess.

That's only the death rate of those fit enough to go on a cruise. The other issue with it is that it doesn't reflect the spread of ages to find in a typical country - cruisers tend to be older.

There are a lot of issues with extrapolating from the Diamond Princess

Very fair point, however there's a balance between the skewed demographics towards older people to a certain degree cancelling out the lack of lesser able passengers.

Indeed there are lots of issues with the Diamond Princess data as you say - however, it's the only source of data so far where a large volume of the population has been tested vs trying to extrapolate from country data.

so the dog goes to the toilet in the house . bare in mind most people in both spain and italy live in apartment blocks which is a major factor in the serious numbers of infections they have to deal with

I saw a meme that without asking for a source or evidence or expert opinion has to be taken as what could happen. It says this is our most important week. It is the week that the most infected people without knowing will cause the spread to explode. Please stay at home if you have the privilege to do so.

But also people are beginning to get instruction apathy and I see them roll eyes when people try and tell them to be vigilant. Funny things with an important message in the background may hit him more. I saw one about ten minutes ago that i think will resonate. Micky Flanagan, the cheeky cockney comedian has a sketch about the difference between out, going out and going out out.

    https://youtu.be/0jP_brwVyvc

The clever meme has the tagline ‘You can go out, but you can’t go out out. It’s already been shared by way more people than the other one.

The Diamond Princess cruise ship has its own spot on a list of countries.

And Ireland is STILL lower then it.

basically social distancing is much easier in a country then it is in a ship , the more people in one area the more chance of a spread

Is there logic to what Dave Asprey (biohacker chap) is saying in this video? I thought this was an optimistic pandemic math video but I feel I am missing something and he's not giving the correct picture.

Accepted thanks. As I said the video seemed to make sense mathematically but I am sure he's misrepresenting something and I was just curious if someone who is better with numbers than I am could spot it.

will we break 1,000 tomorrow? 28% increase would get us there, which is roughly what we've been trending on over the last week

    GEEEEEEZZZZ

A 39-year-old woman has suddenly died before her coronavirus test results were ready.

Natasha Ott, from New Orleans, died overnight after coming down with a cold less than two weeks ago, her long-term partner Josh Anderson has said.

Mr Anderson wrote on Facebook that his girlfriend, a social worker, had initially passed on being tested for the deadly virus as she was considered “low-risk” by her employer, Crescent Care, a medical clinic in New Orleans.

But after she didn’t get any better, Ms Ott was tested on Monday this week. She was found dead in her kitchen yesterday not long after telling Mr Anderson she “felt something in (her) lungs”.

I think itll be short of it now. New cases announced will likely be tested earlier in week, before the influx that apparently arrived later in week.

Saw a thing on Reddit, seemingly UK have exact same death number as Italy in timeframe since first death. Going exactly 14 days behind them. Incredible stupidity!

One thing I think the US has going for it is that each state has the power to enforce their own lockdown or restrictions if they so wish, and they are doing so. 75 million people are under some form of restrictions right now. They each have their own national guard which can be activated to help with medical care, enforce curfews etc. They dont need to wait for trump to do any of this.

I'm one of them, living in Illinois. Just pharmacies, Petrol stations and supermarkets open.

The lockdown only came in today so will see how it goes. But pubs and restraunts have been closed for a week allready.

I won't really know the full extent how it will effect work till Monday Morning. I'm working from home regardless last two weeks.

No-Where near the level of National Gaurd levels, curfew and stuff yet though.

Forgot to mention all parks closed as well. Non essential businesses are meant to shut but don't think any factories will be affected, regardless of what they produce.

Yeah me too. Vegas here. I hope it wont get to the point of the national guard and enforced curfews. I haven't needed to go out since they announced the closures of non essential businesses so I dont know how it's going really except they are now having to use the police to enforce it in some cases. Some people still dont get it.

The weirdest thing is the strip being closed. I feel like taking a drive down there just to see it empty and closed.
