This is why I hate the Liberal and PC mindset this generation has no values.

People will not just do the fcuk what they are told and work together.

Yeah, keep shoehorning in the liberal PC stuff, this is just the thread for it.

There's more community transfer cases than people that have caught it by traveling,is that not indicating that it's rampant out there?

But the EU is in charge of overall strategy. It has the power to call for emergency meetings and generally bang heads together.
That's the council of ministers from all the different countries and lockdowns and health are not pan-national competencies, It's up to individual countries. If you have too big a deficit or you don't not apply EU laws properly they'll come looking for you.

I cannot see why any relevance whatsoever is attached to the figure for the total number of cases. This figure is unknown and unknowable unless the entire population were being tested regularly.

The stats which are known and which can accurately measure the progress and impact of the disease are:-
    the number of hospital admissions,
    the number in ICUs,
    the number on ventilators
the number of discharged, as recovered, from hospital and
    the number of deaths.

Testing has limited use as an indicator of the presence of the virus in the general population. Only those who have significant symptoms or may have been exposed to someone who has already tested positive are being tested. Many people may have, or have had, the virus and have not been tested.
It will be a useful exercise, when this episode ends, to test large numbers of people for antibodies to see what percentage of the population actually had the virus.

The tests have a huge role in protecting the spread and it focuses the efforts of those contact tracing to those who actually have it The WHO said to test test test like South Korea are they wrong?

On the backlog of tests - that's just going to be reality. We're never going to have the absolute complete picture on infection rates, it's a best attempt.

That's why people are told to isolate once they start showing any of the symptoms, not to wait on test results. A backlog of tests should not mean an increased spread in the mean time, if people are following the advice properly.

The real numbers of interest are those who are getting it badly enough to require hospitalisation, the number required to be in ICU and the death rate. Two days in a row now this number has been lower than expected, that is a good thing. Hopefully it continues and isn't a blip.

Theres no retest in the vast majority of cases after the initial positive test.
During your 14 day isolation after a positive result you must be symptom free for the last 5 days before being declared recovered.

OK, how do they know that the viral load in your system is low enough that you wont be a spreader?

If look at internal flights in EU though this seems bizarre , are the people arriving being quarantined and put in hotels for 14 days.
Don't see how this cud be stopped when this amount of air travel is still going on.

How do you know how many of those are passenger flights and how people are on those flights.

What hope do we have with groups of teenagers and college kids roaming around like nothing is happening, what chance do we have of controlling it if the parents can't even be arsed keeping them at home or explaining the consequences to them.

I live in southern England. About 40 miles outside London.

This is the local mega-shopping centre at 3pm , on a Saturday , today. Took the photo myself. Have never seen anything like this in my lifetime.

Please, please, stop fixating on the number of tests carried out because they are on a self-selected group and have no known relationship to the numbers of people currently infected.

There are increasing delays in even that self-selected group being tested, and thereby the Confirmed figure is being understated. I sincerely hope that time delay in the reporting of the results to those tested is not indicative of any delay in the system becoming aware of those results.

I've seen a few posts on facebook from parents saying they're "driven demented" already for the kids being off school, do parents even fcuking like their kids? Any wonder you're seeing plenty around still.

Really wish this virus was hitting the teens instead of the old people.

If this was hitting the useless brats hard you can be sure we would be in a Spanish style lockdown.

I will not apologise for this post gangs of the little fookers wandering around is so selfish.

It seems that there is a huge reduction in air pollution in China. This is due to the reduction in industrial output because of the cutbacks due to the outbreak.
It seems that over 1,000 people die in Ireland per annum directly as a result of air pollution.
Is it possible that the lives we save from reducing our air pollution will be more than the lives lost due to the coronavirus?
Could the outbreak of the coronavirus be actually saving lives worldwide?
Also, I wonder are road deaths down during this time?

Im all for reducing air pollution and improving health. However this could cause death at biblical levels.

If 60% got infected and there was a mortality rate of just 1% thats 30000 people. In the space of a few months.

It would take many years of clean air to cancel that out.

Are people travelling here even aware that basically everything bar supermarkets and the likes are shut down? Gonna be a lot of disappointed tourists coming in.

The US is riddled with it. In a few days they will get hit with the exponential back log what has been building up. Then, 10 - 14 days later, the death toll will start ratcheting up accordingly

    Why would it matter?

Once people are following the advice properly, and self isolating when they show symptoms, then it doesn't matter if they get their test result 5 mins after the test or 5 months.

For the people who get mild enough symptoms to be able to stay at home, which is the 80% bracket I believe, their test result is nothing but a statistic. Once they got the symptoms they should be self isolating. After they get confirmation they have it nothing changes for them, except the confirmation that what they thought they had is actually what they have.

We know the hospitalisation and ICU results are accurate, since those tests are prioritised. That is the real number to track.

Hopefully the Gardi get the powers like the Spanish police and forcibly start locking the little twats up, sent them off to an isolation cell for 3 months or until they get the message.

My understanding is that they are only closing the external borders of the EU though? (which is stupid as within those borders you have countries with different strategies including the infamous herd immunity one - it only makes sense to lock borders around areas with a uniform and tough internal strategy)

Some countries are closing internal EU borders at their own initiative, but I don't believe this is an EU wide thing.

Or did I get that wrong?

Alot of EU countries are stopping travel, France, Germany, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, off the top of my head. Most airlines are grounding their planes apart from a small percentage. In the case of Ryanair, what they have left flying the majority will be the Ireland UK routes and inter UK routes. We need to place quarantine restrictions on everyone until we get a solid handle on where our numbers are.

Are they reporting the number of tests conducted daily? That would be helpful.

At the press conferences George Lee is always asking about the numbers tested and Tony Holohan keeps telling him that they release the test figures once a week. Next release is due on 24th March.

The New Cases confirmed Number is meaningless unless it can be compared to the number tested and results back (ie: They are in Synch).

I wish someone would ask why they don't release these figures every day.

You said this was a fetish for some people.

This is not fun for anybody everything is shut 250'000 people out of work going into work is risky and even then our jobs may be at risk.

I would love for this thing to be beaten.

Two days results is far from enough to base anything on I am looking at Italy Iran and Spain.

Of course two days in a row isn't enough but let's be honeys compared to other country it's not doubling or near to doubling. Downward trends are what we want and hopefully the trend continues.

This is scaremongering however the death toll will be massive.
