Wearing a mask is unlikely to make any difference to you, but if every Tom, Dick and Harry starts buying and wearing masks it will cause supply issues for the people who really need them, namely healthcare workers.

but I think the point BTW was making was if everyone wore a mask, sympomatic or not , if they carried the virus it would stop them shedding to people who were virus free.
So while wearing a mask wont make a difference to YOU it might to people you come into contact with.
supply chains are a different matter

Houlahan said today that 55% of those infected are male, 43% female.

    Yeah, me neither.

The other 2% is Sam Smith ;)

Where did you get this nonsense from?

    The WHO.

60% population infection if the genie gets out of the bottle, mortality of 3 to 6%

    65 million * 60% * 3% to 6%

1.2 million to 2.5 million deaths over the life of the virus.

I apologise for the condescension Sir.

My frustration is because I've been asking for 6 weeks now why our borders remain wide open. All I'm met with here is guys telling me its obvious and even a child would know the answer yet when I ask them what that is they disappear!

I didnt disappear . I'm just choosing to ignore your BS. Good day sir.

Because it would be a monumental task to arrange this when the disease is already in the country and all efforts are going in to dealing with it right now, or preparing for the severity of what may happen.

And most importantly, the people who are managing this and deciding the best course of action do not feel it is worth doing at this point.

Also, if you started asking this question 6 weeks ago, then that would have been at a time when doing so would probably have been even more difficult to arrange and explain and would also lead to a precedence where every time WHO says we need to pay attention, people like you would be saying 'We should close the borders immediately'.

And so what if something is difficult to arrange or explain I hear you ask. Because there is a fine line between the population accepting something and rowing in behind the efforts (as is happening now) and thinking it is either ok to ignore it, or to go in to outright panic potentially leading to societal breakdown in places.

He was talking about mental health and keeping hardware stores open. I think his point was if people or the elderly do have to self isolate, they’ll need something to do - painting , planting , diy in general to keep us all busy and sane.

Do we think the fact that we have rolling news and social media is making all this worse?

Say it kills 2.5 million over its lifespan. The Spanish flue killed between 50mill and 100mill.

Is this one so scary because we are hering about it ALL THE TIME?

Would a way out of this be to get the kids back to school and the adults back to work before the economy crashes like we've never seen before.
Order all the main at risk groups to self isolate and practice social distancing. Focus all our rescources at them to provide whatever they need. Realistically, how long can we live like this. Let us get back to work because the consequences for most of us will be far worse than catching a virus that will be mild for most.

Any particular reason they think it stops at 70%?

I think it's the hope of hers immunity making the disease die out before the remaining 30% are infected

Stopping flights coming into an island. How would that be a monumental task?

And most importantly, the people who are managing this and deciding the best course of action do not feel it is worth doing at this point.
No and they didn't feel it was worth it at the beginning which was criminal.
Also, if you started asking this question 6 weeks ago, then that would have been at a time when doing so would probably have been even more difficult to arrange and explain and would also lead to a precedence where every time WHO says we need to pay attention, people like you would be saying 'We should close the borders immediately'.
Again, how difficult could stopping flights be to arrange?

Explain? The explanation would've been clear. When the Italian outbreak began and they cancelled the rugby match they should've stopped all Italian flights. Its really not that difficult.

And yes! If a deadly contagious disease breaks out again I will, once again, be calling for the borders to be closed!!!
And so what if something is difficult to arrange or explain I hear you ask, because there is a fine line between the population accepting something and rowing in behind the efforts (as is happening now) and thinking it is either ok to ignore it, or to go in to outright panic potentially leading to societal breakdown in places.
So stopping people flying to Italy (and monitoring other potential outbreak areas) would send the Country into such a panic that it was preferable to import the disease and spread it as quickly and as wide as possible?

I'm sorry but that makes zero sense to me.

That was the route Boris Johnson was going to take but I think it might have changed over the past day or two. News reports from today says London/London hospital is I trouble already.

    It would never work here.

2.5 million? Thats quite an optimistic estimate..Unless a vaccine can be found this could easily kill 50 million

Yeah I think it was a reasonable suggestion and as it turns out lots of people are doing exactly that while they’re off work, a bit of DIY around the house.

I don’t think the kids should be back in schools this soon. Schools will be closed for Easter anyway April 3rd to 19th. Kids are normally mildly affected by this virus. The week before schools closed I’d so many kids in my classroom sick with colds and coughs. If a child in my class had the virus it would be hard to tell from a sniffle. There is no keeping primary children apart from eachother I don’t have the tables nor space in my room. It would spread even further. If it was passed onto me , I live my sister and my who are nurses and my dad who’s almost 70. Me passing it onto any of them would be a disaster.

I know people have to go back to work and people are still working atm. But the thing about kids is they have minor symptoms, we won’t know who is infected or not.

Anyway hopefully after Easter we’ll be in a better situation.

In my opinion Ireland was going to have a recession soon anyway. I’d rather the force on saving lives. Our health system can’t hope if we go down the let’s carry on as normal route. More people would die , ICU beds would be filled with Co-Vid patients leaving less space to anybody with any other life threatening injury/illness.
