Holohan says he doesnt expect further measures to be announced, will the lockdown end on the 29th then?

No, the measures would only be removed when daily cases are virtually zero.

Forgive my ignorance but is today’s number good that it dropped from 191 yesterday?

even at this extremely early stage it is, especially considering more and more tests being done.

Dare I say that's a good sign? That they expect peak to be near?

Well its not worse. It is still a very significant almost 25% increase though

I think he meant additional measures, like an increase in closures in addition to the school closures- cafes, restaurants etc

Worldometeres says peak in Italy is still two weeks away...jesus

I wish they would give the date that the results relate to. It could have been Patrick’s day or Wednesday but for some reasons it’s not revealed.

But if it stops health workers from getting the virus or at least helps them why would it not help the average joe? I honestly dont get the contradiction on this 1

Surely masks would be appropriate PPE for people who work in supermarkets or airport's where staff will be in close contact with people that have it?

Health workers adhere to the right protocols putting them on and taking them off and change them regularly disposing of them properly. The general public does not know how to do this and could be constantly readjusting once for comfort thereby providing themselves no protection

They don't expect the peak to be near, he said we'll still be going up the curve just at a slower rate, one of the reporters asked if it went up by 15% per day would that be good and he said they'd be happy to see it be 15%.

sky news on the streets of South London now. Outside a pub that is packed.

Jesus - you'd think people would have got the message now.

Yes it's good but it's going to vary each day.

The point is they are new cases. The numbers are going to ramp up.

Too many people are reading too much into each day's increase and comparing it to the day before.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 396 ✭✭Jin luk

The cases were lower today for 2 reason folks,

    1. They were running low on testing kits and just recieved more kits yesterday

    2. Paddys day would create a lag.

Would love if it was declining but thats not the case im afraid.

Might be a silly question but why has there only been 3 deaths in Ireland so far despite there being 683 confirmed cases (probably thousands infected though)

I pray this mortality rate stays low

It probably has a lot to do with testing.

UK are only testing people hospitalised. They might have 100k people presenting with symptoms, they hospitalize and test 10k of those. Then 1k of those die. Their figures will say 10k cases and 1k deaths.

The death rate gives a better (lagged) indicator of actual infection rates. If 10 people die today, that is an indication that e.g 1000 people were newly infected say on the Friday 2 weeks ago.

Probably because they've just figured out how totally fcuked they could be.

Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue

When do we expect to peak and for the new cases to be near zero?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,027 ✭✭✭lbj666

    I prefer our approach :)

Yup and if we get out of this sooner than other countries being very simplistic it would means our economy will rebound quicker than theirs.

Yep. They could be in serious trouble which also means we could be.

All I'm saying is in my opinion the fact that they don't think a full lockdown is necessary suggests an inkling of positivity.

So they would work if a video was circulated on how to properly put on and take off? Its pure contradiction regarding masks

Jesus - you'd think people would have got the message now.

Interviewing people bunched up together including the interviewer. Compared to RTE who are using microphones on extension handles.

This all has an influence on people's behaviour.

Too early to tell. Testing only ramped up yesterday and the effects of the social distancing will only be seen next week.

Same trend in other countries, some days lower but most days higher and loads of other variables as well.

You'd need a downward trend in new cases for multiple days to read much in to it.

Perhaps a backlog of cases was being cleared yesterday?
