China is twice the size of the EU. 15 cities were put in full lock-down, not just Wuhan.
Covid-19 reached every province of China, and was the epicenter for the entire pandemic.
China has virtually no new domestic cases now.
Anybody willing to write off what any Asian country has done in relation to this virus must first produce a very good counter-proposal.

They are only at the beginning, it will return over and over unless the country remains in lockdown until the rest of the world is rid of it. They're not much better off than us in reality

The Chinese did a proper lockdown. We didn't.

After about 6-8 weeks China is starting to return to normal but they will likely have long term restrictions such as social distancing in shops and public.

Because of our phoney lockdown, we'll still be in trouble 6 months from now.

You either shut everything down completely and start up again after 2 months, or you just scrape along at the bottom for 6 months which we likely will.

We have - in all but name! All schools, cinemas, restaurants and pubs and most cafés are closed.

    What's the obsession with Cheltneham?

There are people here that have come back from all over the world, having been in far more infected places than Cheltneham.

Because some people who were there are now showing signs of infection! Yet racing continues in ireland and jockies/trainers who were there may be infected.

Climate change is real and is a big problem but I'm not in danger of dying of climate change in the next few months. Priorities man, priorities.

COVID-19 first, then deal with climate change.

The poster was implying it was a nonsense.

We've moved on. Not too much love for Dundalk racing but this week's ire is now reserved for people out walking and the yoof.

unfortunately these idiots are not only harmful to themselves and those they come in contact with, but they are a detriment to society as a whole

because of them the government are easily able to pass laws that curtail a whole population's civil liberties, that while necessary during this crisis, will be left on the statute books going forwards leading to unforeseen consequences in the future

I think I would still rather they bring in the emergency powers and deal with the consequences later if we survive. It would be of little comfort if our gravestones say "well at least his civil liberties weren't ever at stake".

Presumably, their acquaintances who didn't travel at all are giving them a wide berth.

It's absolutely mad to see New York going into lockdown. I was supposed to go next month (obviously cancelled), just can't believe how fast this is changing the world.

Certainly not all restaurants are closed yet. I've two sons who are both working today in two separate restaurants.

I think it's a form of Fine Gael bashing exercise?
The British also get the blame for letting it go ahead.

Are people coming back into the country supposed to self isolate/quarantine now? Are there any guide lines for passangers disembarking ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 92,394 ✭✭✭✭JP Liz V1

The pubs that are opening side and back doors should lose their licences, named and shamed, disgraceful

    Name and shamed, I agree.
Losing their licence? Not a hope as they're not actually doing anything that's breaking the law.

It's immoral and encouraging people to do what they shouldn't do in these times but, nothing illegal.

Catch an underage person in them though and your wish may come true

We have - in all but name! All schools, cinemas, restaurants and pubs and most cafés are closed.

    Nope sorry we haven't.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_Hubei_lockdowns
At 2 am on 23 January 2020, authorities issued a notice informing residents of Wuhan that from 10 am, all public transport, including buses, railways, flights, and ferry services would be suspended. The Wuhan Airport, the Wuhan railway station, and the Wuhan metro were all closed. The residents of Wuhan were also not allowed to leave the city without permission from the authorities.[13][14] The notice caused an exodus from Wuhan. An estimated 300,000 people were reported to have left Wuhan by train alone before the 10am lockdown.[15] By the afternoon of 23 January, the authorities began shutting down some of the major highways leaving Wuhan.[16] The lockdown came two days before the Chinese New Year, the most important festival in the country, and traditionally the peak traveling season, when millions of Chinese travel across the country.[13][16]
Following the lockdown of Wuhan, public transportation systems in two of Wuhan's neighboring prefecture-level cities, Huanggang and Ezhou, were also placed on lockdown.[13] A total of 12 other county to prefecture-level cities in Hubei, including Huangshi, Jingzhou, Yichang, Xiaogan, Jingmen, Suizhou, Xianning, Qianjiang, Xiantao, Shiyan, Tianmen and Enshi, were placed on traveling restrictions by the end of 24 January, bringing the number of people affected by the restriction to more than 50 million.[1]
    Lockdown timeline[edit]
13 February 2020, the Chinese government has issued extension of order to shut down all non-essential companies, including manufacturing plants, in Hubei Province until at least 24:00 20 February.[17]
20 February 2020, the Chinese government has issued extension of order to shut down all non-essential companies, including manufacturing plants, and all schools in Hubei Province until at least 24:00 10 March.[18]
13 March 2020: Huangshi removes controls and permits on road traffic within its urban area;[6] Qianjiang does the same for its entire administrative area.[7]
14 March 2020: Hubei Sanitation and Health Committee (卫生健康委员会) Vice-Chairperson Liu Dongru (柳东如) announces that only Wuhan remains a "high-risk area",[19] and that the entirety of the rest of the province is considered medium- or "low-risk areas". Any low-risk township-level divisions, in addition to those medium- and high-risk divisions with no confirmed active cases, could lift their blockades and other mobility controls.[20] Per China News Service reporting, by 14 March, besides the aforementioned Huangshi and Qianjiang, Yichang, Huanggang, Suizhou, Xiantao, Jingzhou, Jingmen, Shiyan, Xiangyang, Tianmen and Shennongjia had announced "measures to lessen controls" and for industries to incrementally resume work and production.[20]
17 March 2020: Jingzhou removes its permit requirements for transport, resuming normal transport operations, and also removes entry/exit controls on xiaoqu.[21]
18 March 2020: The Hubei taskforce to control COVID-19 (湖北省新冠肺炎疫情防控指挥部) announces that, with the exception of exit/entry into Wuhan and the province as a whole, all anti-COVID-19 traffic checkpoints within the province are to be removed.[22]

Maybe I should have been more specific and that said we should follow a Hubei type lockdown. You all know the whining we'd hear though if it was even tried here.
