GAA pundit Joe Brolly has launched an extraordinary attack on Taoiseach Leo Varadkar over his state of the nation address on the impact of the deadly coronavirus.

Mr Brolly branded the Taoiseach’s televised address on the national emergency as "particularly nauseating" and a "shameless PR exercise".

Speaking on the Off The Ball podcast, the former Derry player said Mr Varadkar’s speech was an "insult of people’s intelligence".

Sorry Joe but you have to be intelligent for someone to insult your intelligence. Hands up anyone who cares what some gob****e GAA commentator has to say about topics outside GAA because I sure ****ing don't!

They certainly like to think so, in my experience.

Some differences between Germany and Italy might be:-
    - wider geographic spread of cases in Germany?
    - less aged population
    - cultural differences in social interaction with other people
    - and obviously the fact that Italy was hit first

Though if Germany is very different from Netherlands or Denmark say, then maybe there is something else going on with the figures.

Coronavirus, for you ze pandemic is over.

There is no way that people can distance themselves from children . Families with young children will have to care for them . And take them out for fresh air when they can . Its not possible to distance yourself if you have kids or indeed anyone depending on you

Depends on what age they are - in some cases it's very possible. But it's more the overall attitude of 'as long as one family doesn't mix with another' that i take issue with.

80% of transmissions in China where in the home.

If someone in my family catches it, we all can catch it as far as I'm concerned.

I certainly won't be 'socially distancing' myself from my wife and kids - what weird ideas some people have.

If you are a source of illness then you must behave responsibly.

Social distancing within the normal family home would be a near impossibility (i.e. people sharing bedrooms etc), not unless one family member had tested positive for the virus.

Work with friends and neighbours to bring in supplies for the two weeks isolation required.

Its 2 weeks out of your life...2 weeks that's all. It could save countless lives.

Unfortunately some people will refuse to self isolate once they test positive. There's always a small minority who do this. Which is why isolation may have to be imposed. This was the only way the Chinese got on top of it.

    Evidence? Proof? Source?
Do you have any evidence apart from your gut feeling?

Fact is that the germans aren't release data in any level of detail like the Italians are.

It's deliberate and an attempt to stop panic. Thing is with this virus. You can only stick your finger in the dam so long. They do have a much greater ICU capacity. People are dying before ICU overwhelmed so why are they not showing. I've been in Italian hospitals and German hospitals and there is not much difference in the level of care.

So why does something impossible suddenly become possible once someone knows they have the virus? I understand the logistical difficulties but you do what you can as much as possible. People going out for jolly walks together in groups of 4 or 5 don't give me much confidence that they're making any attempt to mitigate the risks.

This **** is hard, I'm stuck in the middle of nowhere in isolation, completely on my own, no way of getting groceries at the moment. Pretty envious of families, co-habitors to be honest. But just try to do what you can instead of saying 'pfft, we all live under the same roof so why bother?'

The numbers look to be getting worrying in Belgium relative to its population. Especially in terms of deaths and number critical.

    What an absolutely ridiculous accusation.

The back biting and infighting in this thread, at a time like this when we should all be pulling together for the greater good, is a very sad indictment of our society as a whole.
Well, the fact of the matter is this virus originated in an unsanitary region of China and the authorities over there lied and tried to cover up the extent of the problem and displayed gross incompetence in attempting to curtail it's spread. As a result we have a pandemic.

Could the discrepancy in mortality rates between Germany and Italy be down to simple socio-cultural norms.

In the North of Europe we tend to shun our old folks a bit more, they live alone or are packed off to nursing homes. In Southern European countries they tend to be more integrated into communities, invited to social events, out and about in the sun.

Thus way more old people have gotten the virus in Italy and Spain and they will get more deaths.

Has anyone taking ARDs for high blood pressure been advised to stop or switch to another anti-hypertensive medication?

There was a paper in Lancet on this subject but this paper from Australia explains the possible issues quite well:

"Leading experts warn that ARBs may amplify COVID-19 severity in patients"

    https://www1.racgp.org.au/newsgp/clinical/ace-inhibitors-arbs-and-covid-19-what-gps-need-to

I know a Dublin cardiologist has stopped taking his meds (under this category) and advised some patients to do so as well. Obviously one would need to consult his GP and weigh up the relative risks of switching/stopping meds.

I’m on an ARB and have read a couple of articles about it and am slightly concerned. I haven’t spoken to my gp about this, have you?

I think you will find that most conspiracies such as the one alleged against the German government in this case are almost impossible to maintain.

Too many journalists, politicians, family members, doctors, nurses and so on to keep quiet.

Even a totalitarian state like China couldn't maintain quiet around causes of death.

So if a large number of elderly people have died of coronavirus in Germany you can be certain it would already be front page news over there. No evidence of that so far.

So unless someone has a rock solid source or evidence to back up their allegations, they remain allegations which to be fair aren't worth much.

Most standard houses only have one bathroom also.

It's pretty irrelevant since people don't tend to use the toilet at the same time. Wipe everything down after, fairly simple.

I like Joe. Any link to his radio piece. Sometimes he does go a bit ott for attention but he's good entertainment. I didn't mind Varadker's speech, it was very tame and understated which was fine, it wasn't the great speech that some FG fanboys on here made it out to be.

Some of the media gobshítes were calling it Churchillian; Puke
