Thoughts on the emergency legislation and power to detain?

Do you think it will come into effect immediately, or will hold of until things get worse?

I believe the powers already exist and I think exercising them is unwarranted outside of an outright lunatic deliberately 'trying' to infect people vs just being irresponsible.

If you look at the the countries that constitute the South, they're all much further along this than those in the North.

I just think we're looking at it having taken hold earlier in southern countries than in Northern ones.

Possibly because of warmer climates and so more tourism - earlier and more frequent airplane delivery?

I really don't want to defend Trump, the man is a buffoon but outlets like Vanity fair lying about him to score political points in a time of crisis is disgusting.

Now that Trump is engaged and the crisis is accelerating—the Dow dropped nearly 3,000 points on Monday—Republicans fear he is operating without a playbook at a time when one is desperately needed. On Sunday night, with no unified message coming from the government, rumors swirled online that Trump would imminently announce a national lockdown (the White House tweeted that the rumor was false). But several former White House officials told me they believed the rumor to be true. “This is not what he likes to do,” a former West Wing official said. “There’s no boogeyman he can attack.” On Monday, Trump reportedly told governors they’re on their own. “Respirators, ventilators, all of the equipment—try getting it yourselves,” Trump said on a conference call, according to the New York Times.
    https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2020/03/trump-awakens-to-the-covid-19-danger

"Trump told governors they're on their own" and a shortened quote to prove the lie, when Trump actually went on to say:

“We will be backing you, but try getting it yourselves. Point of sales, much better, much more direct if you can get it yourself,”

"Trump told governors they're on their own" vs "We will be backing you"

How is that anything other than dishonest reporting? He's clearly saying that he doesn't think the Federal government being in the supply chain is a good idea, it will only slow things down and make it more complicated, but the Federal Government is supporting them.

Now if you have in depth experience in securing vital medical equipment in times of crisis and you have good evidence that the Federal government should be actually doing the purchasing and then distributing the equipment then by all means disagree with Trump, but this sort of deliberately twisting things is toxic.

Good post. This is going to be lost on some people though.

Is there any information on how many tests Ireland has carried out and how many of those tests have been positive or negative?

Great video on why mass testing and isolating infected is essential. This is a YouTube station that’s used by medical students in USA. Also the guy talking works in a hospital ( not as a janitor either :) ). He’s also done videos about patients being treated and the effects on the body.

Minute 5-6.45 is very technical stuff that I don’t understand and the stuff after is more about potential treatments that none of us will understand or get much out of. I suppose it does show that there are signs that there might be ways of reducing the impact of the virus in advance of a cure which would be nice to think.

Also has a link to HSE website on these videos which is great. I find this stuff interesting, most might not to be fair.

    Mass testing is important.

But mandatory isolation after returning from abroad is probably more important and we've missed the boat on that in Ireland. Thousands flying in from hotspots and then likely going to work, on public transport and so on. So a real failure to enforce that which could be costly.

Might it not be a case that there should be some random testing to get a statistical number for reference?

The UK is still refusing to participate in the joint EU procurement program for ventilators & medical equipment despite EU saying they can..

The deluded nonsensical opinions of 'the leader of the free world' keep appearing here... like what the seasonal effect will be on the spread of the virus (It will all be gone by April etc.)

And Boris Johnston's mishandling of the pandemic will have a huge effect here because viruses do not respect borders.

    All very relevant IMHO

Hang on According to posters like Aegir, Boris has not mishandled this, "the UK are implementing measure that suits them at their own rate". You just have an axe to grind against the UK because you are obviously anti brexit and want to get one over on the Brits.

It seems Boris has no intention of restricting travel in and out of London. Yet Aegir still asks how the UK approach could possibbly undermine ours.

In bed dying with tonsillitis, worst thing is that all the symptoms are nearly the same as the virus. I get tonsillitis however every three months so knew what was coming

We are all using a lot of water these days.
Everyone is at home, washing hands for 20 seconds, cooking from scratch, cleaning the house, doing more laundry.
Can the Government increase the total free water allowance before we are charged by Irish Water for extra usage over the limit?

If full lockdown occurs it vital its done at exactly the right time ,

You can only do lockdown once and for a couple of weeks possible up to 3 weeks, Any longer people panic ,people start to feel helpless and then the bad side of people will start to emerge ,

Its so important that if its done its done at exactly at the right moment,

Spain’s health ministry said the death toll from coronavirus soared by 209 to 767 fatalities in the last day. The total number of coronavirus cases climbed by a quarter to 17,147. On Wednesday, there were 13,716 cases in Spain.

Jesus. Well Spain are in as bad or worse shape than Italy now.

Staying under 30% increase each night is seen as a measure of success for us. Last night was 25%. A day on it's own doesn't mean anything and there's the variable of tests conducted.

How and ever we have 366 cases in the republic, 30% of that is 110.

So 110 is the figure to look for tonight. If we continue at 25% increase we'll have 92 new cases tonight. It would be 2 days in a row.

Other variables are the length of time it takes for lockdown to have an effect, incubation period, the Cheltenham and other returnees from abroad...when will we see their virus symptoms and if/when they passed it on hitting the figures.

And of course anymore deaths. But 110 is a figure to keep in mind.

Refused to keep distance from the checkout person.

Checkout person closed the till down when he continued to refuse and went to the staff area.

The Prick went to customer service (big man going to complain about checkout person and get them in trouble - setting an example to his kids)

Customer service call store manager. He listens for 30 seconds to the prick.

Trolley taken off him and told to leave the store immediately and banned from returning to the store for life.

Testing in non symptomatic patients in Italy has thrown up a large cohort of asymptomatic carriers. This further reinforces the need for social isolation measures.

The Expert WHO China group said that the Chinese found that the asymptomatic positive people eventually became symptomatic, except in very rare cases.

The phrase they used was that the epidemic was a pyramid and not an iceberg.

Perhaps as we get to know more about the virus that opinion may change.

A second dog has tested positive for coronavirus in Hong Kong. It is a German shepherd whose owner was also a confirmed case.

The first dog that was diagnosed, a 17 year pomeranian, died earlier on this week.

Have You Had Your Tonsils Removed? We Have Really Bad News For You

But a pioneering study published in JAMA Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery suggests that this widespread practice could be setting children up for more illnesses in the future.

The research team, led by Dr Sean Byars at the University of Melbourne, examined medical records from a massive dataset of approximately 1.2 million Danish individuals whose health had been followed from birth to age 10, and in some cases, up to age 30.

After comparing subjects who had their tonsils or adenoids removed before age 9 to controls, Dr Byers and his colleagues found that those who underwent tonsillectomy were three times more likely to suffer from either allergic or infectious upper respiratory tract diseases – including asthma, influenza, and pneumonia, among others – in the following years. Undergoing an adenoidectomy was associated with a two-fold higher rate of these diseases as well as chronic pulmonary obstructive disease (COPD) and conjunctivitis.

And surprisingly, the analysis indicated that many of the troublesome symptoms of tonsillitis and adenoiditis that removal surgeries aim to ameliorate – breathing problems and chronic ear or sinus inflammation – often return soon after the operation, meaning that any possible short-term benefits are paltry when stacked against the long-term risks.
