500 people in Madrid needing ventilators today alone. How many have we presently got?

I thought Italy would turn a corner, but no, it's only getting worse FFS. Why is it killing so many there? Why is it still spreading more and more regardless

They aren't in lock down long enough to see the benefit of it yet.

Whatever about the name of the virus or where it came from, most of the recent potential pandemic viruses come from our pressure on the natural world

Tip of the iceberg’: is our destruction of nature responsible for Covid-19?

just because something was before doesn't make it right now the Spainish flu may well have started in France in WW1 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_flu

Yes it does. The point concerning the actual origins of the Spanish Flue is irrelevent. The point is what it was named.

You don't have to convince me. You'd be surprised though how many people slap the card on the terminal for several seconds, completely neutralising any benefit from avoiding contact payments.

Yep I've noticed loads of people doing that!

We currently have 500, plus 500 in private hospitals, have an extra 300 ordered and due any day and 100 extra per week after

It takes time for measures/lockdown to work.

Just see on worldometers that the death rate for closed cases has jumped up again and is now at 10%.

Do you think this is due to Italy cases or is this the reality if a China reaction is not taken?

    Very worrying.

this is because most countries are at the early stage of this thing, when death % will be high as people take longer to recover than die. it will start to fall as it develops.

But Wuhan or Chinese Flu is definitely not Ok?

It isn't its name. Why can't he use the right name for it. He is politicising people's deaths (which he accused the Dems of it).
He refuses to use the name the rest of the world uses for a reason and that is to blame someone for his failures.

Certainly he can try and complain the Chinese hid the numbers but he has done the same by saying the virus was under control.

”The HSE said it has procured an additional 300 ventilators on top of the 500 it already has and has been assured of an additional 100 ventilators per week going forward. This is on top of 500 ventilators already in intensive care units and another 1,000 breathing apparatus that will also work.“

If the rates of increase are as anticipated then this level of detail will be of questionable value. In effect all you’ll get is a population density map / chart.

Dublin will have one third of the total. Carlow 2%.

When there’s a trend or hotspot to be evaluated it makes a lot of sense but once it’s everywhere then it’s just noise.

Agreed which why it will contain more detail such as age breakdown, ICU cases, recoveries, how many were community transmitted ( majority at this point I reckon).

Hard not think this disease has been circulating for months in Europe given how quickly escalating and widespread the numbers are...

I don`t get what you`re saying exactly. There have been positive cases for months that were diagnosed as something else?

Is it spreading or is more testing revealing the extent of what was hiding in plain sight all along?

Why is the press briefing so feckin late? Every other country publishes figures at various stages during the day, why do we have to wait till so late at night to reveal ours?
