The lockdown should start taking effect soon and that will hopefully start to ease the pressure on the health service there.

I think it will take another week/10 days before you start seeing figures come down in Italy.

    That's exactly right.

If you plot the new cases as a % of the overall, they are flattening out now, as are Spain. This is what happened in China too, and they got out of it.

Doing the same for USA and you would see a continuing sharp upwards trend.

We need to stick with what we're doing, and be ready to bite down harder. We are changing our course and will see the benefits in 2 or 3 weeks.

I'm hoping that Ireland can be one of Europe's outliers or 'success stories'. Finland and a couple of other countries seem to be holding up well too.

Still too many people who won't cop on.

Are people returning from SPain, etc. ordered to self quarantine for 14 days? Is this checked by anyone if so?

Please please forget about 30th of March will be luck very lucky to see kids at school come September might even be longer

I know that. You know that. Vast majority of parents I speak to expecting to send kids back to school after Easter at the latest.
They’re already finding it a terrible strain. What are we going to do?

Just to be clear - this is speculation. I am of a similar view, but at this stage, AFAIK, the official line is they are only closed until Easter

    But!
Set up Google Pay or Apple Pay and the tap to pay limits arent a problem.

I have a smartphone and am a BOI customer without contactless. And of course Google pay doesn't support my card and my passport is out of date so no Revolut either. Sake. I have ordered a new card however so fingers crossed it gets to me.

The Mandate trade union which represents retail staff has been notified that the Penneys chain is to close due to Covid-19.

Brown Thomas and Arnotts also shut.

What do you mean by this?

BOI don't support Apple or Google Pay, and a smartphone is needed for either the Apple or Google apps.

Clearly this appears to be true but why is it? Considering the incubation period is 3-5 days in the vast majority of cases wouldnt one expect a huge reduction in number of new caes after this period?

    Such gutless leadership.

A 37 year old in Madrid and a 17 year old in Korea both without any underlying conditions have died, the Korean boy is suspected /undetermined but he has tested positive in some tests, negative in others. While these instances are still very rare we will see them from time to time as there are such a large number of cases now but perhaps it might make young people take this more seriously and realise they arent invincible

The teenager in Korea tested negative for COVID 19 eight times but also tested positive in some tests, so currently it is still undetermined .

Over 99% of cornavirus patients in Italy who died had pre-existing health problems...OVER 99% ! ...With an average age of 80 years old....

I think this has been mentioned here before but it's worth repeating :

One of the differences between Germany and Italy is that Italy test for the virus posthumously, Germany doesn't.

In other words...a lot of dead Italian people test positively for the virus, but that doesn't always mean that they died of it just with it.
Germany doesn't test for this at all.

With UK closing schools and not going ahead with exams. I wonder what measures will be taken in regards to Leaving Cert students this year.

Pure Gallipoli type planning that is going to needlessly cost the lives of thousands.

They have a history of this type of idiotic planning.

The teachers want to remain on full pay. That's grand. Let's check in again in 12 months when the 2nd emergency budget is announced and all teachers get a 20% pay cut.

The least ye could do is work for Simon over the next six months.

Why?--- sorry didn't finish post--- why would teachers get a 20%cut? Also many of us have volunteered our evenings/weekends/Easter break. What have you done?

By this Friday they need to be frank with people so that we know what the likely scenario is going to be. No need to protect adults from the truth....even the ones who are today dumping the food they bought in a panic last Friday.

It must be comforting to have such a simple world view. Even if we could simply make more who would carry out the tests? Where’s the lab space? It’s just not possible. They are prioritising which is the correct thing to do.
Not simple. Given the global nature of supply change I imagine there will be excess capacity due to precursor shortages / restricted supply from India /China.

UK planning to "feed the nation" with basic food etc. We have moved from "it'll be grand to "nothing we can do" attitude. It's progress but not the right kind.

There is **** loads we can. Granted we are not there yet but we need to anticipate the exponential growth.
    WFH where possible
Increase contactless limit on cards to prevent transmission via keypad.
    mobile / drivethrough testing etc.
    Schools / uni suspended.
