Whatever anyone says regarding lives v economy - a shutdown for 18 months just won't be sustainable ...

Unfortunately yes. We will have to face up to the reality that the Economic cost will be too much. Protect as much as we can obliviously. Mitigation over Suppression will be necessary in the long run.

Do people really think it’s wise to keep the border open with the UK? I mean, they’re literally still deciding policy for us. They decided not to take part in the EU travel ban so we’re not. It’s disgraceful.

Yeah I'd imagine travel ban will be announced Thursday, hence Simon Coveneys 'get home by Thursday' tweet..

nearly 10,000 cases in Germany & 26 dead.

These death rates in other countries are far higher than they really are imo.

Countries need to do more testing. I think when retrospective testing comes out that checks if you ever had Coronavirus we will understand better the true death rate.

Is it odd that the NCT doesn't mention anything on their website homepage about this worldwide pandemic and how it relates to booking NCT tests?
If you do a test now and have to get something remedied, you have to pay for retests ........ if you can get someone to fix the issue.

Would it make sense to suspend NCT testing now?

China locked down the city and province with the most cases on the 23rd of February. Their new homegrown daily case number is now in single figures.

They are now getting all their factories back to full production practically everywhere.

Where did you get this 18 month figure from ? The vaccine ?

It is far more likely that an antiviral drug will be developed or that an existing drug will be proven to work against the virus long before then.

Correct. The "true" mortality rate is probably around 0.7/0.8%. It will vary considerably from country to country.

I'm not so sure that telling the 1 in 5 people that would have required hospitalisation due to covid to just die at home instead would be good for the economy.

In fact society would almost certainly collapse and it would end up costing us everything.

Back to the drawing board, Nermal

That's what these "Economy at all costs" types don't understand.

Allowing Covid-19 spread to develop Herd Immunity is insanity.
Not only will key workers die, as it is not just an old persons disease, but people will refuse to go to work anyway. Why go to work and risk your life if there is a 1 in 5 chance you will be hospitalised? Possibly in an ICU? Or that you will spread to other family members that will end up in hospital.

The health system would collapse as more and more health workers would be infected. Supply chains would collapse or be crippled so badly that there would be food shortages.

And people will also refuse to go to work because they will be nursing sick relatives.

Take the pain now, or eke it out and destroy the fabric of our society.

They are the choices we have now.

No point in contacting the hse covid helpline it's only for people with symptoms as far as I know.

They were as helpful as they could be as a matter of fact. The person went off looking for the info. She just called me back with another number to call (health and safety ) but guess what? That doesn't work! Invalid number tone when I ring.

Isn't the advice for symptomatic people to call the gp?

    Hey jonny,

We have been posting on the dance music forum for many years now, but he had to say it.

A lot of people are not taking this seriously either because they cant understand how its going to play out or they don’t want to believe it.

He needed to focus people minds to the reality of where we are going to be this time next week.

I have to be honest, my respect for the man has gone up a few notches, I wouldn’t have given him any time before the election, but I think he was pretty decent last night, a little bit wooden, but said what needed to be said.

Respect, peace and stay safe man.

    I totally agree.

I’m not a party person or a nationalist on any meaningful capacity but that speech topped off what has been an absolutely superb 9 days from our government and authorities.

That speech was superb and it shows how our leaders are leading and trying to bring us with them. It was transparent, setting out how they see things progressing and explained why they are doing what they are doing. I would say a lot of other countries are jealous of how our government and authorities are handling this.

A lot of people seem to be struggling to get the importance of the speech and how lucky we are to have leaders who aren’t just doing things and making calls, they are trying to keep us all in the loop on everything they can.

That was just a superb speech, anybody who thinks it’s scaremongering probably needed the speech more then anybody. It’s the truth and most likely what we are facing, putting your fingers in your ears is not going to change that. People clearly don’t get what’s going on and need to STFU, start listening to what’s being said and cop the f**k on.

Was thinking about this, the waiting rooms are clearly not appropriate now and the health of testers is a potential issue - someone coughing inside your car when testing lights etc. You'd be wise to boil hot water and apply a cleaner to the entire interior and obviously wear gloves on the way back from the test centre

Agreed. Couldn't stand the man, but my opinion of him has changed dramatically. My wife and I watched it first just to suss it out. We then sat 3 of our 4 kids down to watch it (17, 14, 12 years of age) and it really both drove home the seriousness of the situation but also gave them both reassurance that there was at least someone at the helm of this ship, and an explanation as to why we were keeping them from seeing their friends and their grandmother. The eldest cried. She's a bit over dramatic anyway, the middle girl turned off her phone and begun to help her mum around the house and the young fellow looked at me and said, "I suppose we all have to step up yo the plate, like during the war. He went upstairs, put on his army cammo gear and went out to split logs for the fire
I think the speech hit the nail on the head.

Easy knowing you aren't in an at risk group. I'm in an at risk group, being pregnant. I'm no more likely to get it than a non pregnant woman, but if I do, the consequences for me and my unborn child could be dire, including harm to the baby if I have a fever, and harm or death to me if I contract pneumonia.

Agreed. There is a myth that only the over 70s are at risk of serious complications. There are numerous under 70s also at risk.
The less people who contract CV the better from a health but also economic point of view.

No official recommendations from HSE re ppeople for home helps! Tried to fob me off with contacting my public health nurse who 'might know something different.' I pointed out that as there were no official guidelines what could she know? Have contacted my td. Will be call the home help office for the official stance then going public

Official message from the state: Protect our elderly and chronically ill.

Official action: Send in walking petri dishes to them to deliver their care .
That helpline won't be able to help with your query though as it's not its function, the home help office is the one you need to contact

Most people seem to experience a mild flu. For some the symptoms are so mild they never even realised they had it.
Sure, protect the elderly and vulnerable, but lets not panic and lie to ourselves about how dangerous this is the general public.

I understand that NCT is a private business and profit is a driver (excuse the pun), but not even mentioning Covid-19 on their homepage as it relates to bookings and the safety of their process and their steps to limit contagion; it is very odd and unprofessional and actually dangerous not to address the worldwide pandemic.

Those singing and dancing in temple bar didnt look very panicked.

Those travelling to Cheltenham had very little anxiety.

I have no issue with the gravity of the situation being communicated for people like that tbh.

Can anyone recommend some good podcasts on the topic - scientific ones? I know I could search myself but I’m trying to keep my anxiety levels down and don’t want to find things that will do nothing but panic me.
