Our economy will recover pre-crisis levels of GDP - but we will never get back the lost output. The debt we will generate will last for generations. Capital will be destroyed, investment will dry up. Young people will suffer reduced earnings their entire lives because of this.

Lives are precious, but they’re not priceless.

Easy knowing you aren't in an at risk group. I'm in an at risk group, being pregnant. I'm no more likely to get it than a non pregnant woman, but if I do, the consequences for me and my unborn child could be dire, including harm to the baby if I have a fever, and harm or death to me if I contract pneumonia.

People work hard to provide for their families. So most economic activity is also driven by emotion.

Your attitude is basically "everyman for himself so long as I'm alright that's the main thing". Thankfully the vast majority don't share this point of view.

This is not just about emotion. As others have pointed out it is in no-one's interest to clog up the health service, that affects everyone from someone who suffers a heart attack to a pregnant woman having a baby.

Economies have recovered from the Great Depression, two world wars, etc. and come back stronger than ever.

On hold 12 mins on the HSE helpline. Home help arrived in to my Dad this morning and informed me they will not be issued with any ppe beyond the gloves they always have. No masks, no sanitising hand gel, no disposable apron. The nature of their work means they cannot maintain physical distance and they are going from house to house all day. I am absolutely raging that they, their clients and any vulnerable people in their families are being put are risk in this way. 16 mins on hold now...

No point in contacting the hse covid helpline it's only for people with symptoms as far as I know.

ok, so layoffs are inevitable in my place, at least temporarily. We are reviewing it week by week but in the meantime we are going to try pay people their €203 euro a week social welfare to get them paid and keep them out of dole offices

What is the procedure for this, I have downloaded the social welfare 1 page form that Regina O Doherty announced but what do we do? I also think this is the wrong form to be honest, is there a special one for when employers are paying the €203 so we can claim it back??

Specific details haven't been announced yet
“Where employers, who have to cease trading because of the impact of social distancing, continue to pay workers they will be able to claim refunds from the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection. A temporary refund scheme is being established for this purpose. This refund will be for €203 per worker per week. This means that workers retain their link with employers and there is no need for them personally to submit a jobseekers claim.”

The Minister explained that refunds will take some time to process but in the meantime the Banks will provide working capital finance in the form of overdrafts or short-term loans to cover costs.

How many people are unemployed now?

How does this look for the world economy if it continues for 2-3 months?

Will the EU have funds to bail countries like Ireland out? If so how? If not why?

    Surely Italy has suffered enough!

'Sing across rooftops': Bono writes coronavirus song dedicated to Italy

Here, as I said to many others posting similar, leave the Irish begrudgery nonsense aside for once!

It's a song, trying to lift people's spirits, like every other person who has a guitar playing on FB live or something!

    It's not a crime!

Anyone else think it’s bull that the virus won’t spread during the Summer because of the heat yet in Brazil and Egypt and the likes it’s spreading like wildfire.

    Hey jonny,

We have been posting on the dance music forum for many years now, but he had to say it.

A lot of people are not taking this seriously either because they cant understand how its going to play out or they don’t want to believe it.

He needed to focus people minds to the reality of where we are going to be this time next week.

I have to be honest, my respect for the man has gone up a few notches, I wouldn’t have given him any time before the election, but I think he was pretty decent last night, a little bit wooden, but said what needed to be said.

Respect, peace and stay safe man.

There is a lot of fear out there at the moment, which is understandable. But do remember,

    1) People saying that 2m or more Irish will get it is just pure speculation at this point. There is just over 200000 cases in the whole world at the moment. New cases have dropped in China and Italy seems to be possibly levelling off now.

    2) If 2m Irish do get it, you still have less than 50% chance of getting it.

    3) If you do get it, it’s fairly mild for up to 90% of people. Even when it’s serious, you can still make a recovery with hospital treatment.

The numbers are very much on your side.
The best thing to do is try to stay isolated, particularly if you’re elder or have poor health.

What are you doing in here with your common sense and optimism?! Do you not know this is where dreams come to die :D:D

I'm not so sure that telling the 1 in 5 people that would have required hospitalisation due to covid to just die at home instead would be good for the economy.

In fact society would almost certainly collapse and it would end up costing us everything.

Back to the drawing board, Nermal

Given that Ireland hasn't been hit hard yet. I think Leo's speech was near perfect.

It had a simple message. "Dont panic, Just take it seriously. Its coming and its going to suuuuck"

New viruses don’t seem to be affected by hot temperatures.

I think the point he was trying to make is that the numbers will rise drastically in the next week or so...which they will and we already know will be the case.
What did you think he meant?
He said what had to be said, delivered it well and is doing a very good impression of someone who sees this as a major medical issue, instead of a political or border or popularity issue...which as a doctor, he is first and foremost trained to do.
If he hadn't said it as it is, people would be here in a few days saying he lied to us.There is no winning in this, it's not a point scoring game.
And it is not forever either.

That snake MM yapping on about covid19 yesterday, I'd say he's spending 90% of his time concerned about FF in all this

Do people really think it’s wise to keep the border open with the UK? I mean, they’re literally still deciding policy for us. They decided not to take part in the EU travel ban so we’re not. It’s disgraceful.

This is an hour to hour reactionary situation - try and continue with the lives of yourself and your loved ones through the next few days, before worrying about the long term future .... like next week.

The Chinese lockdown is being lifted after 1 month and 3 weeks.
The Italians have only been locked down for about 10 days.
The rolling 24 hour news coverage, social media et al, is amplifying the entire thing making it seem like forever.
The country will not be shut down for 18 months.

Go away you f**king snowflake. People have to realise what we are all dealing with, now and for the foreseeable. No point in sugar-coating it. Suck it up, & abide by the recommendations.
