Laughable that so many on my Facebook stream are criticising the speech tonight and the government in general but have had posts over last few days at crowded beach, or house parties eTc.
They're literally just criticising him for the sake of it.

Understood, they're still selling tickets for the flight out on Thursday.
Perhaps they just haven't locked that part of the system down yet.
I was really just wondering if there was any official line on it, with regards to Ireland. I know Germany have banned all flights landing, effective today.

    Which airline?

Lol. There's flights still coming in all day every day. Thousands upon thousands of people.

Why? I've been home now for two weeks apart from food shopping

Not everyone is doing social distancing, gangs of teenagers about, restaurants still full etc., flights coming in, have the army and Gardai help enforce, the curve isn't flattening, the cases are increasing, we should be doing everything we can possibly to stop the spread imho

Sounds like so many others in the country... he thinks there is a big overreaction!

    There isn't!

There is a massive over reaction.
The lad is wearing gloves, using sanitizer and taking precautions like we all should but not falling into the trap that this thread and all the previous threads on boards have done...which is doomsday porn and a cohort of posters getting their rocks off on a serious situation but hyping it up into some imagined apocolyptic nightmare

Flights only make financial sense if the planes can go both ways.
Many airlines will be lucky to survive this so there won't be many subsidised one way flights.

So because there are no flights over (probably), there will be none back, even though it's not prohibited?

What's a total lockdown? Everywhere closed except food retailers, chemists and essential services, i.e. what we're doing?

I think the added bit would be no leaving your home under any circumstances except for food, hospital or emergency and anyone thought to be flouting said measures end up with large fines and possible arrest? Like not even allowed out for a walk type of thing.

There's still plenty non essential services still open, lots of offices, etc

I don't. Completely unnecessary and over the top. Social distancing will suffice.

There's tens of thousands already infected not showing symptoms yet, you knock yourself out.

There may be some but not many, far too costly for the airlines.

This was why there was such a large government appeal days ago for irish citizens to return home ASAP.

    Population of Italy 60.5 Million
Cases of Corona Virus Italy 31.5 Thousand

    Population of Ireland 4.5 Million
Cases of Corona Virus est by next week/s 15 Thousand

Not quite sure that adds up tbh
Also, Italy has a much older demographic than we do

Totally. Leo and Simon have fukked up Royally. Doesn't matter what heroics they perform from here on in. They made a catastrophic mistake from the get go, the results of which will begin to be realised over the next week or two.

Actually YES... it is his fault technically!

It's not ONLY his fault - but he is leader of the country, and absolutely could have taken a position on it and ordered our citizens not to travel to a bloody horse racing festival while there was a dangerous virus going around.

We could have threatened them with fines for not complying with these orders. And we could have quarantined and tested them on return if they still went!

We could have done lots of things... but instead our government did nothing, and took no position at all on the issue! Which is lack of leadership!

Most people in the country could see it was a bad idea to go to that festival at this particular time. So why not take the lead as our government, and do something about those idiots?

Worse effected areas have only implemented lockdowns in last few days. Banning flights at the time was impossible and illegal. Governments don’t have the power to interfere in independent commercial businesses.

We are doing more and quicker than the majority of countries. Our government has taken steps on the issue which is why we are in a better situation than most. U.K. still have schools open and concerts with tens of thousands of people. To say it’s doing nothing is wrong.

100 of youtubers going around coughing all over people for a reaction, and then saying '' IT'S JUST A PRANK''

Geez they don't even know if they have it , all have the potential to infect 100's with these antics. Should be arrested for life endangerment

Airlines will be parking up much of their fleet.

They will not want to fly a plane from US to Ireland and then have to fly it back empty at a loss to park it up.

There will still be some movement if the Airline has the plane in American already and is happy to park it in Dublin.

That's it. There's a cohort - loath as I am to say it I think it's particularly prevalent in Ireland - who must hate all politicians. No specific reason why - just, they're politicians. They don't have a clue about politics or economics, they just follow an uneducated bandwagon of "der all gangsters". So it doesn't matter what the speech was gonna be. Their minds were made up beforehand because politicians. Some tried to come up with some super lame reasoning (e.g. "The speech was scripted" - like every speech ever) but it just boils down to whingeing for no reason.

    Nonsense!

You know the virus travels by air vapours, right?

So gloves and hand sanitizers only do so much.

The only trap he's falling into, is thinking/hoping that this thing will just blow over... You can hear him at the end of the video trying to reassure himself and viewers that "nothing will happen"... but then you can see him having a re-think about those words pretty much as they're coming out of his mouth. Because truthfully, like almost everybody else right now, he hasn't got a fcuking clue what's going to happen with this thing!

And neither do you either btw... you're just being arrogant and complacent, by telling people they are overreacting! You haven't a fcuking clue! So stop pretending you do! ;)

Its a total overreaction for th amount of cases and deaths.
its also not to be passed off as nothing to worry about.
Unlike the like of you,I can accept the dangers of the virus without getting horny for the doomsday scenario we are being fed.

He is being updated by Ireland’s Infectious disease experts so he is in no doubt of expectations and scenarios. He also has to balance what he says to reduce hysteria and civil unrest. For example people were out pain buying when no one expected where we are now. If he was blunt, the whole thing would explode.

He has closed everything he can and asked people to isolate. If we did that and stop waiting until an underresourced army take to the streets, then that’s all we can do.
