Can you explain how to stop Irish citizens from getting these flights home?
Why would you want to do that?
    murpho999 wrote: »
Did you not hear Simon Coveney that people from Spain etc need to get home by Thursday as flights will be grounded.
Indeed I did, the moment after he said to expect 15k cases soon.

Really, it's about containment amongst the people here who have it not the same ting you're going on an on about and attacking politicians.
What's the point if the whole World can still enter?

People attacking Leo for not wearing a shamrock. People attacking him for reading a prepared script. Yes we should have been more proactive earlier but we are where we are. This is a national crisis of a scale hitherto unseen since WW2.

Also you sound xenophobic. Trump had the same approach with xednophobia, stopped all flights but the "Chinese virus" is still spreading.

What are you talking about? Is trying to protect your citizens xenophobic now?

Trump's actions no doubt has limited and slowed its spread. Good job. Pity our muppets have waited until the Country is riddled before they decide to limit incoming flights.

Airport still wide open to flights from all over the World incl France, Italy, Spain, China, Iran etc. No virus screening on entry whatsoever.

Yet Leo gives Paddy a pep talk and tells him to keep washing his hands because soon we'll have 15,000 infected.

    Farce.

I work in a popular tourism spot (currently doing back office stuff and repair/upkeep) so keep coming into work for the moment and it is shocking the amount of Spanish, Asian and Americans that are still coming around. The place is closed yet they still visit, in their droves and I have zero contact with them but you can see them on site - even some hiring minibuses to get here (fml). I expect a major slump by the end of the month and it's likely most of my coworkers that aren't permanent will be out of work (let go) as the tourism industry implodes and fails to recover this year. When this "surge" hits I expect the gov will downplay what could have been don but I hope we learn to deal with this stuff better as it might happen again - meaning airport screenings and the like.

And the main reason for that?

Varadkar’s speech was a bit like someone reading in a leaving cert English class who has been told to use more expression, very strange and not a lot of hard facts.
How in the name of god was it strange? People really are in desperation to find fault with it.
    Unpopular opinion alert

I think Leo spoke very well tonight . My main concern is for myself but my elderly parents also . I haven't seen my parents since last Friday , when normally I would see them several times a day. Tonight they both rang and said they felt relieved by what Leo had said.

Even if its horse **** .

It made my incredibly worried parents feel at ease for a time . So for that I am thankful.
Don't know how it could be horse sh1t, but anyway, it's not an unpopular opinion. It's just a non "I must find non existent faults in it" opinion.

Maybe its my overly active brain keeping me awake, but an idea just occurred, although I have no clue whether it would be feasible.

We keep hearing about how stretched the health service (hospitals in particular) will get if the projected figure comes to pass. I was wondering would it feasible if those temporarily out of work, myself included, could be trained up to help out, be it carrying out basic medical treatment to the affected or even adminstering the swab test? Hazmat suits included of course.

Between community nurses, paramedics, army personnel etc. there surely would be enough expertise to carry a one-day course as a matter of urgency. Just doing a quick count of the towns and villages in my area too, it is easy to identify suitable buildings currently out of use that could become temporary wards (sports clubs, community halls, schools). Not every town and village are going to be stretched with confirmed cases.

Maybe I am too influenced by the community shelters that pop up in America after a severe natural disaster, and by the WW2 films with the trauma centres located anywhere they can, including churches, but if this is really going to get as apocalyptic as some fear, its a measure worth considering.
The main constraint on expansion of the health services is trained personnel, not accommodation, or equipment (if willing to pay market prices).

There are very valid arguments, and currently legal constraints against your suggestion, but if the worst case scenarios come to pass, then just like the abandoning vaccine testing standards, all constraints will be out the window.

If doctors have to triage into treat, or leave, then losing 8 out of 10 to inexperience/lncompetence is a bonus over 10 of 10 with no treatment at all. Many suffers might prefer the massive pain-killer dose.

Was working remote for a few days and keeping myself to myself, but back in the office tomorrow.:(
I have those surgical maps from a few years ago,,,a "banter" birthday present.

While I know they don't stop you getting it, in the unlikely event of me having picked it up recently,,would it be worth wearing for everyone's benefit? Its an office,,,I have no symptoms .

The pretending that it wasn't taken seriously is amazing. Doublethink of an Orwellian level.

There was literally a big deal made as soon as it was known people were returning from skiing in Italy.

Was a lockdown really feasible at that stage? Of course it bloody well wasn't.

No. Its the Govt's fault they didn't attempt to stop the virus at source thereby limiting its spread here. You're right regarding the Cheltenham people. Terrible.

Who said anything about a lockdown? But stopping Italian flights entering the Country, save bringing citizens home? Absolutely.

Our numbers are better than other countries.

No evidence whatsoever that Trump has slowed it.

Also Trump's approach is xenophobic as he's adopting an "america first" approach and not getting involved in a world effort to fight the spread.

Flights seem to be cancelled from USA. Anybody with any further info?
My partner was due to move here tomorrow and she's just seen on her app that the flight is cancelled.
    She's flying from LAX

But the GP can only say take paracetamol and don’t go out. There is literally nothing else they can do. If symptoms become unbearable go to hospital. If not, stay at home. The big worry is people will arrive on mass to hospitals and even if we’re not infected, get infected there.

Your Gp can sort out a test if you need one

I think people need to calm down tbh

Obviously I'm not a "let's blame the government for the weather" type but the trajectory here is not like Italy's, however it is like Spain's at the equivalent point in time (slightly higher in fact) and compare our population to Spain's. Hopefully it pans out better here but it's worrying.
