Some people do not deserve to live.

    from WLRFM

"The Waterford City branch of the Red Cross say there are a group of individuals pretending to be them are going door
to door offering test swabs for the Coronavirus and charging one hundred euro.

The Red Cross say the group are targeting older people.

They say they do not carry out anything like this.

They are advising anyone who is approached by this group to contact Gardai straight away.

The Red Cross Members on duty always wear full uniform and also has to carry their unique membership ID card.

    "

    Valid point.
An estimate has it that globally, for every diagnosed patient, there's 10-20x more undiagnosed ones with COVID-19. Meaning, if these got tested, they'd be positive. Also worth mentioning that some patient shave very mild symptoms and will have a very mild clinical picture therefore, not presenting for testing let a lone hospital admissions.

If people followed official guidelines it is clear that only need to present to hospitals if symptoms become unbearable. But people are getting duped by fake WhatsApp and ‘from unknown sources’ and rocking up to hospitals and gps. A lot of the same people are then giving out about Leo speech even though it clearly outlined about social distancing.

At this stage even if you have it, nothing needs to be done unless breathing is restricted.

Airport still wide open to flights from all over the World incl France, Italy, Spain, China, Iran etc. No virus screening on entry whatsoever.

Yet Leo gives Paddy a pep talk and tells him to keep washing his hands because soon we'll have 15,000 infected.

    Farce.

Varadkar’s speech was a bit like someone reading in a leaving cert English class who has been told to use more expression, very strange and not a lot of hard facts.

Maybe its my overly active brain keeping me awake, but an idea just occurred, although I have no clue whether it would be feasible.

We keep hearing about how stretched the health service (hospitals in particular) will get if the projected figure comes to pass. I was wondering would it feasible if those temporarily out of work, myself included, could be trained up to help out, be it carrying out basic medical treatment to the affected or even adminstering the swab test? Hazmat suits included of course.

Between community nurses, paramedics, army personnel etc. there surely would be enough expertise to carry a one-day course as a matter of urgency. Just doing a quick count of the towns and villages in my area too, it is easy to identify suitable buildings currently out of use that could become temporary wards (sports clubs, community halls, schools). Not every town and village are going to be stretched with confirmed cases.

Maybe I am too influenced by the community shelters that pop up in America after a severe natural disaster, and by the WW2 films with the trauma centres located anywhere they can, including churches, but if this is really going to get as apocalyptic as some fear, its a measure worth considering.

In fairness, these threads with their self-pitying fearmongering have probably killed more people in Ireland than the virus has.

Addressing the Nation means you make your words suitsble for the widest possible audience, of differing education backgrounds and varied ages. No point in bombarding people with complex data amd scenario's when simple English conveys the message. . In that regard, it was well thought out and scripted, and appealed to a very wide audience, including to use your owb6 post, Leaving Cert English class.

    Unpopular opinion alert

I think Leo spoke very well tonight . My main concern is for myself but my elderly parents also . I haven't seen my parents since last Friday , when normally I would see them several times a day. Tonight they both rang and said they felt relieved by what Leo had said.

Even if its horse **** .

It made my incredibly worried parents feel at ease for a time . So for that I am thankful.

A 1 day medical degree type course?

    What an odd statement.
'Professional' TD's is exactly the reason they were voted against and can not form a government.
Unfortunately, the only skill set 'professional' TDs display are those relating to being re-elected.

Individually TDs posses a wide range of skills, and some much applicable life experience, but collectively they have only one skill arising from their 'profession'.

I actively supported the professionalisation of TDs which was an attempt to develop a more national perspective in Leinster House. It has been a total failure. The hoped for professional national interest outlook has degenerated into slicker parish pump politics with a transfer of power from local level to central office patronage, and a consequent disconnect from everyday realities.

Power once centralised is never relinquished

The possibly unconstitutional, party and leaders allowances have only reinforced this trend.

A lot of them are international students so not easy, and may not have the money to travel home. If I had a sibling in college I wouldn't want her moving back in with my older parents as they may put my parents in danger . One of the guys is on work placement as part of his studies and his parents are in Malaysia so he will have to extend his studies if this happens , I assume they would give him next year free as international student fees are very expensive

University of Liverpool asked student doctors to volunteer as part of their placement. I think there would be legal issues if ransoms started treating and testing.

No. But is there a single place on the Planet that we've barred access to incl those?

People coming off flights will not show signs of virus so no point in screening.

Can you explain how to stop Irish citizens from getting these flights home?

Did you not hear Simon Coveney that people from Spain etc need to get home by Thursday as flights will be grounded.

Really, it's about containment amongst the people here who have it not the same ting you're going on an on about and attacking politicians.

Also you sound xenophobic. Trump had the same approach with xednophobia, stopped all flights but the "Chinese virus" is still spreading.

But the GP can only say take paracetamol and don’t go out. There is literally nothing else they can do. If symptoms become unbearable go to hospital. If not, stay at home. The big worry is people will arrive on mass to hospitals and even if we’re not infected, get infected there.

This is an edge case scenario, probably 15-20 people total would be genuinely put out by this for whome im sure arrangements are being made, vast majority will be on the train back to mammy
