    I wonder?

China's quarantine (14 days in a secure facility) might be the way to go.

It's not a 'ban' but it gets the job done.

I'm a carer for both my parents in their seventies ,my mother had a polio as a child so as a result as a curvature in her spine she has copd, had a bad heart attack a couple of years ago and is on an oxygen machine at least 12 hrs a day to help her breathe. My dad also has diabetes and has his other health issues. I'll be doing the shopping for them now so my dad doesn't have to leave the house, I'm just petrified, absolutely petrified I'll catch it and infect them. We also have five or six different carers in rotation coming in to assist me throughout the week. I've found myself sobbing uncontrollably the past few days, the enormity of this if it affects either of my parents, God forbid, I can't even bring myself to type it
There’s lots of us here in the same boat.
Stick with the facts from trustworthy sources.

I spend lots of time away from this thread.

How does that work on a busy bus, Luas or train??

Well if you can't walk, cycle, drive or work from home I'd say the best you can do is wear a mask and be on top of the advice around handwashing and not touching your face. Maybe look to start early/late to avoid the main busy periods.

Not ideal I know but again we're all reliant on others doing their bit so if someone feels like their coming down with an illness they need to stay off public transport and isolate themselves

    No they are not.

Northern Italy where a lot of the contagion spread, is also where the affluent members live. They have a health service second to none. Or should I say they had before a pandemic came and ravaged it.

They also had 7500 ventilators and they hadn't enough. The surgeons on the ground had to make very tough decisions about who lived and who died. That amounted to not treating people under 60 so that the younger people could use the ventilators.

If the figure is only a fraction of the 15k, it will still be a massive drain on the health infrastructure we don't have and the equipment we don't have enough of.

Stop with the overstating claims. This is quite fúcking serious.

I know it’s serious stop patronising.

I said I hope we don’t get those figures but of course you ignore the facts I stated by saying no they have not.

The facts I stated are true so

Shop during the middle of the day or early morning. Keep sanitizer in the car and wear gloves while shopping. Throw the gloves away before getting in the car. Obviously don't have too much social interaction for this period

Try not to worry. Just take the proper precautions and you will be fine. If 15000 people get the virus it's still only .3% percent of the population.

The odds are vastly in your favour

Doesn't matter, the infection spread undetected in a highly densely populated region.

To put how densely populated it is its the same size of munster with 10m people vs 1m people.

I got very anxious and worried a few days back but made a commitment to myself not to let it happen again, so I only occasionally dip into the news to see the headlines. Might be worth a try. Reading opinion pieces and so forth will drive you up the wall. It's hard but just trust that the government is doing all is can. The mind has an evolutionary tendency to fear the worst so be aware of it playing tricks on you. Talk to others about your fears. You're not alone.

Reach out to people - local sports clubs or even FB pages of your local area - people will help with shopping and that for you so that it's not all on your plate - indeed anyone else that finds themselves in this situation - every little helps.

I would also suggest getting off boards, and not looking at the news that much, buy books and read them, - I say buy because that way you are away from your phone/ipod etc.

Try listen to calming music even for 30 mins in the day. Enjoy time with your parents - as bad as this situation is. Go for walks when the carers are in, even if it's raining just to get out of the house.

Stay positive, this will lift in time.

I wonder if a certain group of our elderly are just not clued in to the news and live in their own bubble.

I would hazard a guess that this is the real reason for the speech being broadcast on Rte just before the 9 o'clock news. There's a lot of people commenting that Leo didn't give any new information in his speech but that's only the case if you are up to date with the news through websites or social media. But what if you don't have access to these things? Would you still be up to date?
The elderly are the most vulnerable and the least likely to keep up with any updates through the day so a speech on rte, giving the facts in a clear, concise manner, at the time when they are most likely to tune in makes a lot of sense.

Exactly. It’s a densely populated region with an older age profile.

The poster that disagreed with those facts, alluded to the fact it’s wealthy, whatever difference that would of made I’m unsure

As things progress more and more people will be needed for contact tracing.
We now have quite a number of state paid teachers who are not working but, being paid.

Why not enlist them for contact tracing?

A few changes to the shopping experience from tomorrow at Lidl's, Tesco etc
    https://www.independent.ie/world-news/coronavirus/coronavirus-ireland-supermarkets-doing-headcounts-as-customers-enter-shops-39053233.html

"Meanwhile, Lidl said that, starting today, it was setting aside the 9am to 11am hours for shoppers aged 65 or older. And starting tomorrow, Tesco shops on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays until 9am will be reserved for those aged 65 and over and family carers.

Iceland said it would devote the 8am-9am hour each day to elderly shoppers and wanted others "to give time to this customer group so they can shop in comfort and safety".

The grocers say notably younger customers will be asked to come back later - but those determined to shop won't be barred unless crowd control warrants this."

According to Crisanti, the director of the virology lab of U Padua, as little as 10% of #COVID2019 carriers show any symptoms at all. He sampled repeatedly the entire 3k+ population of Vo ', one of the initial clusters.

This guy says 9 out of 10 people he tested were asymptomatic. So testing has to be widened to include contacts that have shown no symptoms. This is pretty amazing if true.

I feel the government have really ramped up their response this week which is fantastic to see. I saw a video of the testing centre and it looks very well planned out.

I’ve heard of people needing to wait to the end of the week for testing. What is involved in the process and why does it take so long got them to get tested ?

Tbh, I think there is almost an admission from the Govt that the health service is not where it should be at. And they are making a hard effort bring it up to standard.

That in itself is refreshing to see.

All people want is honesty and transparency. That in itself is very reassuring.
