Not sure why we're still pussyfooting around the CTA. Shut borders with the UK down. And flights into Ireland from outside the EU like the rest of the bloc.

It was a good speech. One thing I did not like was that he borrowed from Churchill but I can forgive that. I do not support FG but in fairness, we are lucky he and his pals are at the helm. This govt has a bit of experience already and since he is a doc himself, at least he knows first hand what our system is capable of. Anyway, I think I have no choice but root for them.
It's the HSE I'd worry about.

    Running out of topics now.

Just being mischievous now, but the haircuts and the highlights for m and f respectively will be interesting.

Tanning, nails, getting fat and out of shape because gyms are closed, the list is endless.

It would have came in anyway

Well no, not necessarily. Certainly not if all countries had imposed quarantine on anybody coming in from China. I'm sure that the high cost associated with this will make governments the world over a little bit more careful in future.

Anyway, that time is predominantly passed (except for China, who has to ensure it is not reinfected). We can talk about war guilt after the war is won.

Was that the one where he talked about what an amazing job he's done with regards to tackling the virus? And making digs at the press? And his political opponents? The man's using the conferences as a platform for 2020.

If you can't catch it twice and are recovered from the first one and are virus free there be no need to isolate so would there

Getting a "negative" test does not mean virus free - enough cases where people tested positive again weeks later

I can't help thinking that Ireland missed a chance to close all ferries/ planes in and out. But at least when they copped on they tried to make up for it. GB might turn out worse of all

Im lucky enough to be in the wilderness and away from it all...

Live off rabbits and fish, you never know a stag might fall dead on land some evening, plenty of fishing and foraging not too far away either.

Sorry to hear about your cousin

Thank you, I hope she will be OK too, it's her first job, only there a month, the wilderness is the place to be noe

    What will that achieve?

The employer will have to set out what they are doing to ensure a safe working environment.

If remote working isnt on it ask why they arent adhering to DoH recommendations but allowing others to remote work

Felt like he had watched Presidents speech from Deep Impact or Armageddon - very articulate but over the top.....Very frightening and looking at figures from rest of the world there is no need....25,000 in a Italy have picked up virus from 60,000 million and yet from 5 million we will have 15,000 in a few days....Speeches like that terrify people...
I've reckoned for a while that there is a strategy of "create awareness of the worst case scenario" and I agree with it, because it might make those who are cavalier and complacent take things seriously.

Was that because it was a holiday destination ? Or just it was near it ?

I’m trying to get my head around are the large numbers mostly from densely populated areas I’m sure there’s a graph somewhere I just have to look harder

If you think only 25,000 in Italy have or have had this virus you are very wrong. The real number is probably in the hundreds of thousands. There could well be 15,000 cases here as we speak.

Italy spread started in a group of small towns in Lombardy before moving to bigger cities like Milan.

By the time Italian government put virus epicentre in lockdown it was too late.

Entirely in your head because you have decided that he's the devil incarnate.

What unilateral action has he taken? Followed the UKs sick pay provisions last week. Followed the European CDC guidelines and announced it to the country from Washington. Probably the most important announcement by any Irish government since the founding of the state.

And after tonight's theatrics nothing new, country is still operational. He's dodged all major decision every step of the way. Geography will save us from the worst of this, not Leo.

    She is hiding

    I'm not a mlm apologist.

Her and Micheal Martin are both quiet. And rightly so. Now is not the time to have BS political point scoring rows on TV (like that tool on primetime).

Now is the time to either say nothing or to reiterate what Leo or two Simons are saying.

People will remember who didn't help when we needed it most. People will remember the eejits who made this worse when they could have helped.

Mostly people will remember the health services doing everything thing they could to help very sick people survive.

I agree but that is also creating unnecessary anxiety...The bit at the start really felt like Morgan Freeman letting the world know an asteroid is coming in Deep Impact....To be fair some great bits to it but real sense of doom which there isn’t and won’t be....I was shook after it but sticking with the maths and seeing what has happened in other places who have self isolated.....

Ah jesus there's no need to distancing inside in your own home. Yes most cases are spread within a home but the whole idea of social distancing outside your home is that you don't pick something up and bring it home.

But you cant guarantee that others aren't bringing it into the home. My father for instance is taking no precautions at all despite my mother having 2 illness that make her very high risk. If she catches coronavirus she will die, no doubt about it. My dad wont even wash his hands and is living his life as normal, he's actually annoyed at being expected to change his habits. You never know what people are like or how seriously theyre going to take this. Youd expect people to have a little bit of common sense but allot of people really dont. Approach everyone like they have the virus.

Leo didn’t stop the flights from Italy for weeks and imported this virus

I WILL POST THIS UNTIL ITS BURNED INTO YOUR MINDS

    You need to stop this.

Nobody stopped flights and other countries are worse off than us.

They were following expert advice at the time and ireland has acted more decisively than other countries such as UK or The Netherlands.

The virus was here long before the Italian flights got here and also the Italian flights were bringing Irish people home too which is what we're supposed to do.

You're just banging the same political drum all the time with the benefit of hindsight and not contributed anything here that's constructive or beneficial expcept vent your own anger and agenda.

I dont know if its hypochondria or not but there are tons of people on mumsnet claiming to be having symptoms and a lots who say they are confirmed as having it. If that's true its already rampant over there. None on boards so far is there?

Didn't Italy ban flights from China on January 31st and still ended up in an almighty mess? Would it have been impossible to make it from Italy to Ireland even if he had banned flights. Did anywhere else ban flights coming in from Italy?

Real leaders don't wait for others to set the path.

The Irish government had the benefit of seeing how the virus spread in China and South Korea and what measures were needed to tackle it. What did they do in response? For weeks they continued to allow flights from North Italy whilst knowing the virus was rampant there, imposed no isolation requirements, no temperature screening of incoming passengers (it would have picked up those that are symptomatic), no checks whatsoever at airports, no travel warnings to the public until it was far too late.

They deliberately waited for it to get bad before they took serious measures and only then because it was what every other country was doing.

Our leaders are doing everything possible to keep as many people as safe as they can.

They have done so much positive-

    - recruitment in the health care section
    - mobilising the €320 per week for those who lost their jobs
    - closing schools, universities, churches, bars
    - banning large gatherings and events
    - securing more ventilators
    - setting up additional testing centres
    - requesting banks, utility providers & the Revenue to defer payments

What more do people want? We are dealing with the biggest crisis of our time.

Compared to Trump & Boris, their actions are excellent, strategic and reassuring.

What? Trump and Boris are actually doing at least the same or more.

The Irish people are the most easily manipulated people on earth, its truly terrifying.
They talk about Trump, Russia, Fox News, The daily Mail and yet it never occurs to them that their own media are manipulating them...christ almighty...
Arrogant "everyone is stupid except me" shyte.

And do clarify what you're talking about.

"Terrifying" - no it isn't terrifying and you're not terrified. What drama queen nonsense.
