That speech was right up there with his love actually comments. Like a naked gun pi$$ take.

Anyone getting any sort of comfort out of it needs their head checked.

    Abandon hope

Govt shill detected. Tone it down a bit and it'll come across as more realistic.

Um you can see from my previous posts that I voted soc Dem and SF in our last election, mate. I'm far from a shill.

I hope people realise theres a multitude of Government shills right now on these very boards expressing their gratitude at how well the government are handling the situation.

No more than other people using this to push their own agendas.

The amount of people posting sly political digs is just sad and goes to show there are still people who either refuse or just cant see the bigger picture..

This isnt about FG, SF, FF. Its not about money. Its not public sector vs private sector

Its a matter of life and death and if people dont take heed and act as they are being requested to there is going to be alot more death than needs be.

Take your political views and ideologies to another thread/forum/day

No fan of leo or fg, but credit where it's due, they've had this hand grenade land on their laps and are dealing with it very soundly. Coveny was very assured on prime time last week, even Harris who initially seemed to be a rabbit in the headlights has come out strong.

One good speech and suddenly everyone's forgot about the housing crisis, trolley crisis, etc.

    Jesus f*cking Christ.

Put your nonsense political tripe away.

    This is a GLOBAL PANDEMIC.

Not the time for stupid, petty, political pointscoring.

Thankfully the other parties have realised that too now maybe their online followers can do the same?

My 20 year old cousin got shouted at and verbally abused in tesco tonight for asking people to distance themselves, came home in tears, what's wrong with people ffs

Hopefully he'll be ok, a lot of people are not prepared for this and they will crack up, lacking social skills, empathy and understanding.

That's why I have a small circle of people I trust.
This will test people's ability to adapt.

Im lucky enough to be in the wilderness and away from it all...

Live off rabbits and fish, you never know a stag might fall dead on land some evening, plenty of fishing and foraging not too far away either.

Sorry to hear about your cousin

They should be sanctioned up to the neck and also pay compensation to other countries.

    By whom? NATO? EU? US?

    Not gonna happen.

It was a good speech tonight but it won't be much use in a month's time if our parents and grandparents are in hospital very soon, lockdown the country is the only and close the factories for a few weeks it's the main thing that will save lives

It’s not that simple, it really isn’t. We need to make sure our parents are following instructions given.

Yep, I was just thinking after he mentioned our economy and the possibility of receiving aid, how Britain must feel now having removed themselves from the bloc.

Financial aid will be a huge help to every EU country after this thing has finished.

That speech wasn't intended to be comforting. It was a call to action, with a bit of reassurance that we're all in it together and we need to support each other.

What would be the point of comforting people? It's about being realistic in a situation like this.

This isn't a PR operation to make everyone feel nice about themselves. We've a huge crisis on its way and it's not going to just go away because someone tells you that it's all going to be fine. We need to be realistic, hard-nosed, practical and just get on with dealing with it.

To me, that's what that speech was about.

The government has done an excellent job in action and communication.

I can't fault them so far.

I don't know what more people want.

Our leaders are doing everything possible to keep as many people as safe as they can.

They have done so much positive-

    - recruitment in the health care section
    - mobilising the €320 per week for those who lost their jobs
    - closing schools, universities, churches, bars
    - banning large gatherings and events
    - securing more ventilators
    - setting up additional testing centres
    - requesting banks, utility providers & the Revenue to defer payments

What more do people want? We are dealing with the biggest crisis of our time.

Compared to Trump & Boris, their actions are excellent, strategic and reassuring.

    Trump has
    - was the first to ban flights from affected areas thus buying time
    - made a consortium of all major pharmaceutical companies to find a vaccine.
    - He waved regulations to allow a vaccine candidate to become the fastest ever to enter phase one testing.
    - He’s giving paid family leave to those affected by Coronavirus.
    - He’s made one Trillion dollars available in government bonds.
    - He got Walmart to use their car parks for drive through testing.
    - he’s planning a bailout for cruise and airline industry’s
    - he’s looking at giving €1000 to every American
    - even CNN are giving him some praise

Please stop the uninformed Trump bashing

One thing mentioned in this speech, and in a previous update too, was the importance of distancing within the home.

Most cases it seems are spread within the home.

I've been staying inside, bar the odd trip to the supermarket, but are we taking appropriate measures at home?

I live in a small apartment with my partner, no children. We've been within one metre all the time. I can't get a bigger apartment.

Sometimes we kiss or hug :( we have to.

Yes, the big 'win' from the speech is to mobilise the entire nation, even in terms of simple things like hygiene.

Did you watch Trumps press conference today ?
If not, i think you should. Was measured just like Leo's but without the scaremongering of Leo's.
    Go watch it and see.

Seriously - the fool that said this was not serious. the fool that said a vaccine is almost ready, the fool that said it was nothing to worry about, the fool that strangled community healthcare in the US, the fool that initially did nothing when he heard the tests were all faulty. The fool that tried to buy a vaccine company to keep a potential vaccine for americans only.

this fool is in election mode. He cares about one person and one person only. Himself. Never hold this fool up as someone to be admired.

The place I work for are not taking this serious and are dealing with the public alot of the day. It's an essential service so it won't shut down but many others are not and are holding much more than 100 workers together...medical device companies for instance

Exactly, people just need to worry about hand hygiene, keeping distance from others and looking out for family, friends & neighbors. If everyone does that we'll see this out in the best possible way.

It's all down to us as individuals to get through this

I know someone who works for a multinational company. They have the capability to work from home but the company says they have to come into the office for work. Is anyone else in the same position? What can be done about it? They are putting their staff at risk of picking this virus up!
