Can anyone confirm that Irish people seeking to come home from countries outside the EU can still do so despite the 30 day EU border closure.

Who in their right mind would throw a face mask on the ground like that? It should be way beyond a littering fine. This has really freaked out local residents and would potentially undermine the location of test facilities.

HSE and Government actually needs to act on this.

If it's people throwing them out car windows, I'd suggest something like CCTV evidence and an enormous fine.

I would hope they are clean masks that have fallen out of a box, or something. Had they been used, they would've been tied. Hope being the keyword, here.

Mar 29th? More like Aug 31st if then.

That's horse****. How can we lock everything down for 5 and a half months. 2 to 3 weeks and society will start to get very edgy indeed. People need to live and work and provide for their families.

I would hope too, but I wouldn't be entirely sure when you consider you've people who'll change a nappy and throw it on a beach.

In the event of a complete shutdown how long could essential services be expected to run for?

Went into McDonalds yesterday ( maintaining my distance of course) and was quite shocked to see staff wearing no gloves handling food ... especially given the circumstances.

Us Europeans are nowhere near as controllable as the Chinese. We don’t like to obey orders whilst they do whatever their leader says without question. Even our political parties are non stop arguing with the other just to suit their party interests. Whatever ways the Chinese managed to somewhat control/reduce this virus, for us it’s gonna be a much bigger challenge. And we will probably screw it up.

Are you fcuking serious, do you know anything about China ? FFS.

They have death camps too, should we introduce them to control citizens ?

food is not really a problem in this case as the gut will kill any virus. as long as hand hygiene is good. probably better than gloves.

It's interesting the over 50% of all ventilators used worldwide are made in Ireland. So if everything was locked down, we would have a series stockpile to use as needed (I know that's not how business works, but interesting to see that we can feed ourselves and ventilate ourselves as needed)
Having ventilation is grand, the problem is the lack of trained staff

Thank you, I agree. I am sick at the idea of managing on €203 per week with rent and a 5 year old to think about.
Really worried right now but I totally understand it is nobody's fault and it's absolutely in everyone's best interest to stay inside and slow the spread. Just a ****e situation all round.

Just been told by a friend (mortgage broker with AIB) that she has an emergency meeting tomorrow. Mention of a 3 month reprieve on mortgages. The latter is speculation so don't shoot the messenger.

25-30% day-on-day increases in confirmed cases has brought us to about 300.

If this continues, we should be at 50-60 thousand confirmed cases by mid-April. I.e. one month from now.

Self-isolation is the only way to stop our health system being overwhelmed.

*Yes, but as someone mentioned earlier, the company is a private company & they need to honour their contracts of supply & manufacturing
*Note that all parts come from china, so its only assembled here, so someone has said
*Only the people of Ireland could stop the supply reaching other countries (not the army, guards, government)

The Govt. now need to start pressurizing banks and landlords to freeze mortgages and rents. No mounting up, no accumulated interest or arrears.
just start time again in a few months. We borrowed 100 Billion+ for the bailout - we can cover the cost of this for a few months.

Government need to do more then pressuring them.. a phone call decreeing it MUST happen and the personal consequences for the ‘higher ups’ (throw them in the joy) if it doesn’t...The Emergency Powers Act.

It is becoming a feature of the measures announced in other countries to help, only a matter of time before it is implemented here.

You'll be shot down because very few agree with Johnson's approach, and because the 'Brits' aren't doing what we're doing.

What do you think about the UK's approach? Even the UK itself thinks it was wrong before, as they have drastically reversed their initial programme (based on, who would've thunk it, bad science).

Imagine having to self-quarantine at-home fighting Covid_19 and you have people out on their balconies screaming and shouting or some wedding DJ blaring 'best of 90's trance. Must be f*cking horrible.

Ireland will not block entry to non EU citizens.

"The UK is refusing to participate in the restriction measure. For this reason, Ireland also cannot participate, because it must preserve its common travel area with the UK on the island of Ireland. But all other EU countries will institute the restriction."

And maybe you can try to understand that all that matters right now is to slow the spread as much as possible.

And what addional dangers are there in having a restaurant which follows high hygiene standards staying open to provide delivery or collection keeping people in jobs?

As you said yourself we're heading for a big economic crash, the more jobs we can keep safely in the coming months will help everyone in the country.

I'll still avoid McDonald's like I always do FYI

Japan has not contained it at all. It has one of the lowest rate of testing in the world

I don't know much about Japan TBH. It's been there for ages and I don't think their health system is going into meltdown like other countries. So even without testing you are not seeing the scenes as they are in Italy. I don't know enough either way to have an informed opinion. Thanks

I don't hear of any companies ranking up production on ventilators. Yes we need trained staff, but that will have to be done swiftly now too, with an experienced person over the team. Can the army help. US & UK say its having companies ramping up production
