For a lot of people, the problem is so massively difficult to understand, and so normalcy bias kicks in. Until it's someone they know personally, the numbers mean nothing to them.

Unless the government steps in and slams the country shut, a LOT of people will presume its ok to keep going with their normal lives.

Fact is we have only had 2 deaths.

When this rises, and, sadly, it will, it will sink in and then , in hindsight,
we will all say they should have done more.

Our health care workers and first responders are preparing for a tsunami of patients in the near future.

They may be working ridiculous hours in incredibly stressful situations and facing a real danger to their lives. They are our front line in this battle against this virus.

If you know any health workers give them a friendly smile or a wave, just to let them know you appreciate them.

Better still offer to do their shopping… they may not be able to get to the shops at times before the hoarders have stripped the shelves. They may even be too exhausted to go shopping.

You might even consider reaching out to them and say, 'look, if you need us to come over and watch the kids for you so you can work a shift at the hospital, then we're happy to do that'.

It's just a way of really trying to help them out because at the end of the day they are the ones that are trying to keep us and our family members stay safe.

We don’t need to know were the cases are.
People should just assume it’s going around and could be everywhere. There is obviously way more that have it than the official numbers.

You don’t just get sick, get tested immediately, and get entered into the official numbers.

People can carry it for days before showing symptoms. Tests take time to process.

Even if there was zero confirmed cases in your town, it doesn’t mean nobody has it.

So stop worrying about exactly were it is.
I also think it will be a good thing when the numbers start flying up. People will panic more and stop doing the silly things they’re currently doing.

Yeah but we need to stop the stupid fùcks infecting anyone else. Unfortunately this isnt a virus that will only kill the stupid fùcks they will get others killed. If it just got themselves killed I doubt anyone would care.

Excellent resource that is tracking the genetic mutations of the virus (tiny changes that may occur from person to person).

From a lay perspective, it seems that one of the main findings is multiple introduction events in a given country.

(Most likely posted earlier, but may help answer continuing questions from posters)

One problem with lumping all the HSE administrative areas in together, and not naming counties (as they said they would be doing this week)..

In Aldi last night and the guy serving me at till, was chatting to a woman behind me laughing about washing his hands and saying "sure there's nobody around here that has it". This was in Longford. Not really considered the East, midlands really.

Now he was also having the chats with this woman who came right up beside me to the end of the till where i was packing my shopping, to chat to him.

I moved away..she was oblivious to me doing so. Was gonna say something to her, but was far enough away at that stage (1.5m) and had all packed into trolley.

I called Aldi today and asked them to have a word, as I'd say he's the kinda lad wouldn't wash his hands on a normal day, never mind these days.

Felt like leaving my groceries there and walking out tbh

I agree with most of this post but if you're reaching the point where you're on the verge of berating someone for standing too close to you you ought to avoid supermarkets.
For what it's worth, I think the 1.5 metre away thing probably isn't as significant as touching items that other people have touched before you (again, impossible to avoid in a supermarket) or being 6 metres away from someone coughing. But don't quote me on that, I'm not a scientist.

Presume the worst to prepare for it. 275 cases. 20% of cases are severe as in needing hospitalisation. Not seeking it, but needing it. Near 60 people who need repirators in Ireland, all in one month, in a country that keeps less than 300 respirators for normal business.

20-30% reduction in lung capacity for people who get through it, lung cancer will increase over the next 2-3 decades due to dead cells mutating or being cockblocked. The new norm.

I hope the people who went to Cheltenham and Templebar last week choke on their own stupidity.

    Need a source there.

As for your last line regardless of what I think of people I would not say something stupid like that

To stop this - simply close airports and ports and then self isolate for 1 - 2 months which will eventually solve the whole issue

Yeah cos most of us will be dead of starvation...

    Few cases in Castlepollard
So just up the road from longford

They need to start naming the counties

I know 2 people in longford self isolating as they think they might have it and have ordered testing

My sister delivered some shopping to my parents today that are isolating as they are in the 'at risk' group (as I am myself strangely enough). I also have another sister in self isolation at the moment since last week as she came back from Italy.

She never entered the house but my niece did some Irish dancing for them for the day that was in it as my parents watched from the window inside the house.
    Strange days indeed!

EDIT: On a personal note......i'm not so concerned about my own health but for my parents........so all I can say is that we now need to look to our own personal responsibility to protect our loved ones and our communities.........It's time for all of us to step up the plate now.

I agree. Italy has is now very transparent for that reason. If you don't measure the problem accurately you have no idea of the size of the problem or if the measures you are adopting are working. Something strange went on at the start. They had 3 cases for ages and in one weekend it jumped to 150. They were either trying desperately to trace patient zero and then realised the info when it became obvious it was impossible or they really didn't know they had an epidemic.

I get the feeling that most countries have fudged numbers big time for whatever reason.
    • different testing criteria
    • not testing
    • running out of tests
    • attributing deaths to other diseases
    • mild / moderate includes pneumonia

    Impossible to make comparisons.

Japan seem to be doing quite well at containing it. They closed schools early which undoubtedly helped.

    506027.png

Japan has not contained it at all. It has one of the lowest rate of testing in the world

I was watching the press conference last night from the HSE and they advised that a more detailed breakdown of figures including counties would be forthcoming later in the week and also figures for those who had recovered.

4.5% of people tested are positive. That's very high

No it’s not. They initially tested only those with k symptoms and known travel to effected areas and/or contact with diagnosed persons and then they tested people with symptoms. The figure would be considered high if they tested absolutely everyone even those with no symptoms or known travel from effected areas.

Will everyone please give over with the political sniping, pols of all stripes are trying to sing from the same hymn-sheet re COVID-19.

Acid test is passage of enabling legislation in next Dáil session. It is to be expected that there will gripes over range of measures, compensation etc on behalf of different interest groups.

Only valid objection as far as I can see would be lack of some type of automatic sunset clause, the longevity of the Special Powers Act comes to mind.

Lol not sure I'm the one freaking out!

I rarely eat fast food but there's tens of thousands of people employed in restaurants fast food or otherwise in the country, a lot of these can safely work but change to delivery or collection only. It would achieve nothing if they were able to do that but we're shutdown.

I think some people just want to see a total lockdown for the novelty of it rather than thinking rationally about what needs to be closed and what can be kept open safely

41 more cases in the East presumably Dublin and suburbs/commuter towns and another 13 in the south presumably cork. Dublin’s spreading very fast

Why you presuming Dublin and Cork:confused:

Completely agree, people should be given a carbon limit for travel. If they want to do more they need to buy it from someone who doesn't want it. This crack of heading off to portugal to the holiday home every month or two, or taking city breaks is completely unsustainable. The world needs a major rethink after this. Climate Change will make this thing look like a teddy bears picnic.

Yawn, using this crisis as a way of pushing your climate change agenda is typical of the climate change alarmists. I've got news for you the climate is constantly changing and it's never going to remain the same.

See if someone knew the county was riddled they might realise this is real and actually fúcking do something. The vagueness probably makes them think "ah sure its not here so lets gather up".

If we've learned anything from this its that Irish are stupid.

I don’t at all agree with your second last point...and feck you on that...

But, I do agree that people should be given at least a county breakdown. I cannot understand through all of this why they are not saying. I’m in Meath, I’m fairly sure if we were given nationwide colours, Meath would be red area (NOT trying to scaremonger but based on cases we know to date etc I think may be accurate. With maybe Cork, Limerick Galway?? and others...It doesn’t matter at this point tbh. IF it was said from the get go, Meath have 4 cases or Galway have 5 confirmed etc, I definitely would’ve been more cautious of where I was etc.. It makes you more socially aware. I think cases by county, at a minimum, should be given.

They're repeatedly saying at every press conference that there are huge delays along the chain of testing. They said that waiting lists of test are several days as demand now far exceeds the supply of tests. Of people who fit the criteria for symptoms being tested, they said about 80% of them don't test positive.

Fergal Bowers said the of number people tested is 6,600, up from 1,800 last Tuesday. I really hope we don't run out of swabs. Today was supposed to contain the results of the first day of the increased testing but with only 60 positives today is likely only out of the further 300 tests done since Saturday.

I'm so tired of watching this being mismanaged.

If the figures are to be believed we still have only two deaths with nearly 300 confirmed case and those several days ago. On the other hand Italy is suffering from something like a biblical plague with people seemingly in good health dying only a few days after falling ill. Have we maybe a less lethal strain of the virus than they do?
