Does anyone else feel their head is melted already. I find working from home really isolating, it's difficult to do what I do without access to a printer etc. which I don't have. I have OCD so the idea of passing a virus to someone is crippling. I have a young child so it's difficult to work anyway. I feel like I need to man up tbh people have suffered through way way worse. I'm probably way too much of a snowflake but it does make it difficult to cope!

The lung capacity thing is a complete unknown at this stage. Secondly, how the fcuk do "dead cells" mutate? And christ knows how a cell could get "cockblocked". WTF all over the place.

Why do all the Italian nurses have bruised/cut faces?
Wearing full face respirators for whole shifts I'd imagine. To be effective they need to be pretty tight to the face and women's skin is thinner and more delicate than men's so more likely to show bruising.

Many worry about Artificial Intelligence. I worry far more about Organic Idiocy.

I was supposed to be in Limerick for my mum's birthday and mothers day this weekend. Just cant bring myself to risk it. Mum was gutted when I was telling her but she sort of understood, same with my dad.

They're both in their 60s. Dads pretty healthy for his age but mum not as much. She's just recovered from a cold and is a former smoker and her lungs aren't the best.

It's times like this I really hate to be so far apart from them :(

People in Europe are dying because of the ineptitude of Brussels, that is not a laughing matter

As usual you are showing that you really don't know what your talking about

By far the highest global deaths today at 750. France is the only majorly affected country yet to report it's figures

USA reports over 1000 new cases in one day, largest ever

This intrigued me so I decided to take a look at the numbers.

World Population By Percentage Of Blood Types
    A : ~29%
    B : ~23%
    AB : ~6%
    O : ~41%

In China the percentages vary greatly in the various ethnic populations. See Frequencies and ethnic distribution of ABO and RhD blood groups in China: a population-based cross-sectional study for reference.

Percentage ranges for blood types across ethnic groups in China:
    A : 25~34%
    B : 26~34%
    AB : 7~10%
    O : 27~38%

In the study, the percentages for the sample in the local population is reported as:

    A : 32.16%
    B : 24.90%
    AB : 9.10%
    O : 33.84%

Hubei province is predominantly populated by the Han ethnic group (~96%).

Blood type percentages for Han ethnic group. (Difference versus local sample above is in brackets)
    A : 31% (-1)
    B : 29% (+4)
    AB : 10% (+1)
    O : 30% (-4)

Percentage blood types for Covid-19 cases in study. (Difference versus Han percentages above is in brackets)

    A: 37.75% (+7)
    B: 26.42% (-3)
    AB: 10.03% (0)
    O: 25.80% (-4)

Now look at the differences between those in the study and the 'local' vs Han ethnic group :
    A: +6 vs +7
    B: +1 vs -3
    AB: +1 vs 0
    O: -8 vs -4

Either way the A blood group seems to be disproportionately represented in the Covid-19 cases, but there's a big swing in the B and O blood types. Given the sample size I have my doubts as to whether the study means anything.

I agree, we need many more samples from different countries, that will take many months before an actual conclusion can be suggested. If any.

Continuously wearing tight facemasks and eye protection. Very little sleep and 16+ hour shifts.

As of yesterday we had 5 recovered. One in the East and the cluster of 4 from Clare (inc the GP).

At least they didn't drag out the information tonight.

The HSE said it has procured an additional 300 ventilators, on top of the 500 it already has & has been assured of an additional 100 ventilators per week, going forward.

    Great news to be fair.

The masks that work are airtight.

This means they are right at the edges which leaves bruises.

i know of several people who took a test yesterday and the day before and still not been given results
Testing on patients within hospitals are prioritised over those from the community.

So there's going to be differences in waiting times depending on the condition of the patient.

69 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ireland. 29 male, 40 female. 48 are associated with the east of the country, 13 are associated with the south, 5 are associated with the north/west, and 3 are associated with the west

Is that all through community transmission?

The one thing I would say is if you're a smoker or a vaper, consider stopping as you will definitely give your lungs' natural defences more of a chance to operate as they should without being constantly irritated by inhaled smoke or chemicals.

It's a practical step a lot of people could take and would have more science backing it than any of these crazy rumours and speculative suggestions.

I'd be interested to know what number is community transmission too, it is a lot more important than the total figure

We were meant to be getting some level of detail and not the west, south, east vagueness.

Will there be a lockdown implemented do you think ??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 226 ✭✭dublin99

The pomeranian dog in Hong Kong that tested positive sadly passed away. His owner who was diagnosed and treated had been released from hospital.

It is unclear if the dog had died of coronavirus. His owner refused a post mortem.

    RIP.

Well I would have expected 85%+ of cases here to be in Dublin Cork and Limerick. There is just almost no urban density outside these areas

It’s obviously very hard to tell with the very vague ‘west and south’ etc, but Limerick seems to have very, low numbers of confirmed cases. Is it a sign of less testing being done? If some areas are less rampantly infected than others then regional lockdowns like in Italy could be forthcoming. As they mean that health services in less infected areas can be used to help those in more infected regions from being as overwhelmed.

Man up/snowflake aren't helpful terms for someone in your situation. Similar to other people previously going on about how 'weak' people are who are worrying about the situation (comparing it to how people dealt with 'the blitz' and other 'recent' crises - no idea how they have such an intimate knowledge of how society as a whole dealt with those situations).

For me, it's about logging off from Boards/social media as much as possible and doing things that can focus the mind (reading, working from home, learning the guitar/language, computer games) but I imagine having kids makes the whole thing far, far more difficult.

Maybe someone with kids could suggest what they're doing in a similar situation?

I wouldn't be so hard on yourself. Most people I know are overwhelmed by this. Could you borrow a printer from someone or go out and buy a cheap one. That might reduce your stress levels.

To think last week we had posters on here (who we all know but shall remain nameless :) ) saying we had this under control and the totals would max out around 10 cases!

I have a 10 year old nephew who could look around the globe and see numbers with the virus and death rate and make a fair stab at our infection rate, with 4th class maths. Seriously some posters, that's a shocking indictment of your IQ, it's below special level maths for the leaving cert.

The vagueness in the areas affected is odd.

Surely if they released some more clear detail, people would be extra vigilant?

Not saying they need to release Eir Codes, but something more tangible than East, West, North and South...
