So I got a call today to say a guy in work has tested positive . I had contact with him early last week. I have no symptoms.
I have been asked to stay out of work until early next week 14 days. Would I be entitled to full pay due to it being out of my control and I am well and willing to work.

It doesn't matter that it is out of your control - the rest of us laid off temporarily are also in situations outside of our control and we are not getting full pay (or any pay at all) from our employers. Apply for the illness benefit. It is €305 for people who are told to isolate as far as I know.

All you can do regarding full pay is ask your employer. Maybe they will be extremely sound.

41 more cases in the East presumably Dublin and suburbs/commuter towns and another 13 in the south presumably cork. Dublin’s spreading very fast

Well I would have expected 85%+ of cases here to be in Dublin Cork and Limerick. There is just almost no urban density outside these areas

Why do all the Italian nurses have bruised/cut faces?

Maybe I'm missing something but surely people are staring to realise that the new cases are not death sentences.

The vast, vast majority of the 69 new cases today will recover, most without even needing hospital care.

Actually the fact that cases are being identified is a positive as it means they should stop passing on the virus.

Idiots getting hysterical about new cases

Idiots not realising that the more your total confirmed cases go up, the more people as a % of that number will need hospital care. The more our hospitals fill up, the greater the death toll will become... because there's already a shortage of beds and vital equipment as we speak!

11 deaths in the tiny country San Marino. Population just 33k

It is but you have to look where is is, I know it's the world's oldest republic and no offence to any San Marinese reading this but it's practically part of northern Italy.

You can only look at this as a study, doesn't prove anything. Nothing going to change my approach to this and I'm an O person.

I couldn't see it mentioned on that news report but I thought I'd heard there were recoveries. Tuesday is meant to be "all info" day.

Why blame Trump? Its still a dickish move to pull off given they know the NYT and WaPo are ardent opponents of his administration and they can't be bothered to differentiate between the US press and him.

They're known for their investigative journalism, China don't want none o' dat right now.

What exactly does 'lockdown' mean ?? Everyone just stays in doors till Corona goes away ? How exactly does a 'lockdown' work ?

Who provides the services ? (If everyone stays indoors)
Who get the food (If everyone is in lockdown)
Who fixes things that might break (if the country is locked away)

My students in china had their food delivered. left at the door. They were allowed out at certain time in the day in a certain space.
No services other than that were/are provided/
    Nothing is fixed.

Presume the worst to prepare for it. 275 cases. 20% of cases are severe as in needing hospitalisation. Not seeking it, but needing it. Near 60 people who need repirators in Ireland, all in one month, in a country that keeps less than 300 respirators for normal business.

20-30% reduction in lung capacity for people who get through it, lung cancer will increase over the next 2-3 decades due to dead cells mutating or being cockblocked. The new norm.

    "Be grand"

I hope the people who went to Cheltenham and Templebar last week choke on their own stupidity.

Are you for real. Do you really think we just sit tight long enough and this goes away. And btw we will have nearly 1000 respirators in a couple of weeks

New measures signed off in the cabinet sub committee this evening
-Power to shut down mass gatherings
-Power to detain someone who has COVID 19 but wont self isolate

Will be passed in a Dail hearing tomorrow

    Credit - RTE
Excellent, expect it will be passed by Dáil unanimously, hopefully with a sunset, or mandatory vote on renewal clause.

It just needs to be applied universally, and relentlessly.

Trump just discussed bringing pharma companies back to the us. Specifically mentioned Ireland as being one of the countries to bring business back from

Not hugely important in the current situation, but he didn't say that, he actually complimented Ireland in the context of being an alternative to China, for the supply of pharmaceutical and medical devices.

i'd say some kind of decoupling from China is a dead cert after this. The number one country in the world will not want to be beholden to China for its medicine and medical equipment after this.

    That was my take too.

Yeh but then wouldnt you say any towns in Southern Switzerland suffering badly are 'basically Italy'. It's its own country, it is experiencing a very high number of deaths relative to it's size

Wife was referred yesterday, just trying to gauge when she'll be tested.

Should be soon enough. Seemed to be about 4/5 days from reading Boards.
    Best of luck.

Does anyone else feel their head is melted already. I find working from home really isolating, it's difficult to do what I do without access to a printer etc. which I don't have. I have OCD so the idea of passing a virus to someone is crippling. I have a young child so it's difficult to work anyway. I feel like I need to man up tbh people have suffered through way way worse. I'm probably way too much of a snowflake but it does make it difficult to cope!

The lung capacity thing is a complete unknown at this stage. Secondly, how the fcuk do "dead cells" mutate? And christ knows how a cell could get "cockblocked". WTF all over the place.

Wearing full face respirators for whole shifts I'd imagine. To be effective they need to be pretty tight to the face and women's skin is thinner and more delicate than men's so more likely to show bruising.

Many worry about Artificial Intelligence. I worry far more about Organic Idiocy.

I was supposed to be in Limerick for my mum's birthday and mothers day this weekend. Just cant bring myself to risk it. Mum was gutted when I was telling her but she sort of understood, same with my dad.

They're both in their 60s. Dads pretty healthy for his age but mum not as much. She's just recovered from a cold and is a former smoker and her lungs aren't the best.

It's times like this I really hate to be so far apart from them :(

By far the highest global deaths today at 750. France is the only majorly affected country yet to report it's figures

USA reports over 1000 new cases in one day, largest ever

This intrigued me so I decided to take a look at the numbers.

World Population By Percentage Of Blood Types
    A : ~29%
    B : ~23%
    AB : ~6%
    O : ~41%

In China the percentages vary greatly in the various ethnic populations. See Frequencies and ethnic distribution of ABO and RhD blood groups in China: a population-based cross-sectional study for reference.

Percentage ranges for blood types across ethnic groups in China:
    A : 25~34%
    B : 26~34%
    AB : 7~10%
    O : 27~38%

In the study, the percentages for the sample in the local population is reported as:

    A : 32.16%
    B : 24.90%
    AB : 9.10%
    O : 33.84%

Hubei province is predominantly populated by the Han ethnic group (~96%).

Blood type percentages for Han ethnic group. (Difference versus local sample above is in brackets)
    A : 31% (-1)
    B : 29% (+4)
    AB : 10% (+1)
    O : 30% (-4)

Percentage blood types for Covid-19 cases in study. (Difference versus Han percentages above is in brackets)

    A: 37.75% (+7)
    B: 26.42% (-3)
    AB: 10.03% (0)
    O: 25.80% (-4)

Now look at the differences between those in the study and the 'local' vs Han ethnic group :
    A: +6 vs +7
    B: +1 vs -3
    AB: +1 vs 0
    O: -8 vs -4

Either way the A blood group seems to be disproportionately represented in the Covid-19 cases, but there's a big swing in the B and O blood types. Given the sample size I have my doubts as to whether the study means anything.

I agree, we need many more samples from different countries, that will take many months before an actual conclusion can be suggested. If any.

Continuously wearing tight facemasks and eye protection. Very little sleep and 16+ hour shifts.

As of yesterday we had 5 recovered. One in the East and the cluster of 4 from Clare (inc the GP).

At least they didn't drag out the information tonight.
