The UK are not testing the people staying at home with probable Covid-19.

Is that hiding the real figures ?

The USA have not a clue how many people are infected at present, again because they are not testing. Hiding the outbreak ??

This epidemic came out of the blue for China and they had 0 months warning that it was coming. China was the canary in the coalmine for the rest of the world, you cannot blame them if the rest of the world did not prepare adequately.

Just because a country is the epicentre of the original outbreak does not automatically make them blameless, neither does other countries failures in preparation.

We can acknowledge the steps that China eventually made to attempt to contain the outbreak but the genie was out of the bottle already at that stage and i think many people will find the suggestion that we should be thankful to them a little difficult to take

I'm suggesting once the curve flattens out, the health service will be well able to handle the additional cases once we do go back to work. Yes that may take more than a month, it may take three, but that's the max. After that we've got to let it run its course where it will.

Once the curve flattens out and we gain control of the situation we should then spike the curve again and overwhelm the system? What would be the point of that?

Is there an evening update today on latest figures?

Sorry deleted post accidentally. This study from China suggests those with A type blood have significantly higher risk of infection from COVID-19 than O type. No idea if anyone else has done this, I'm sure it will be. It's just a sample and changes nothing, even though as a O type myself, would take any solace I can at this stage.

If correct, and it holds up in reality it gives us a slight advantage Italy ~35% O, Ireland ~45% O AFAIR.

Trump actually talking a lot of sense:eek:

He totally ruins it by making the assertion that he was way ahead of the curve in fighting the virus but credit where it's due

If the situation carries on into the summertime will the increase in temperature make a difference. I'd be more worried then as having to sit inside during high temperatures is going to be very uncomfortable for people and would make them more likely to spend time outdoors.

Just back from a drive around Sandymount, Dun Laoghaire and Dalkey. We stayed in the car. The roads were busy. Can’t complain about that as we were contributing to it. But not much social distancing happening in any of the scenic areas we passed by to be honest. There was quite a lot of people out and about.

Swine flu swept through here, it didn't stop the economy, although many got it, got sick. We'll have to bite the bullet, there's no right answer or correct way.

Swine flu isn't comparable with Covid-19.

How many people are actually in hospital in Ireland due to covid 19 at present? Is it the 5 or 6 people in critical care only?

    Was it 6 in ICU

I think we’ll stay like this till June, then gradual return, with elderly and at risk groups being asked to self isolate. Employers will have to try and accommodate remote working for employees in the at risk groups. Schools will go back early I think maybe even end of July, and then I think we’ll need another period of the current measures if this comes back with a vengeance as flu season kicks in

The alternative of letting the virus take its course isn't sustainable to business either. A large chunk of every organisations employees will be off sick for up to a month, some of them will die. Many folks won't want to return to work and society for fear of death at a time when the bodies are piling up and the hospitals can't cope.
It's farcical to think business can operate in that kind of world.

I agree. We are in trouble either way unfortunately!

Was out and about and steady flow of traffic but decent show of distancing on footpaths with some nods and smiles from 6ft or more.

Absolutely NOT what the article says.
It WILL consider if the approach they have taken doesn’t work.
Currently they are not in lockdown and schools and business open.
Interestingly they are very similar in size and population to us

We'd need to see that study carried out in Italy. I'm sure scientists are doing so in the background, we'll see it in a few months. This is just another piece of the puzzle to take into consideration, maybe of solely academic interest.

Already 1000 for the US today. They must have started seriously testing.

Good measures from the US. Incredibly late but looks like they will need to deal with a lot of damage that was already done. Even bringing in some proper social welfare. Even if it is just for this period.

We need to keep the numbers affected down. Remember every 3 days if we are doubling in that period we are in serious trouble going by other countries. So in other words if the number today is less than 78 from Saturday's figure which was 39 we are doing whats needed.

Well that's not factually true, a tiny percentage of able bodied worker will be affected.

He was banging that drum years ago too. What the idiot doesn't realise is that these Pharma companies must have sites to test and manufacture in the EU and other regions.

He can't compel companies to do anything. He's talking out of his hoop, as per.

This virus is here to stay so we have to face up to it eventually. We cannot hide away for ever. Once we relax controls it will just spike again. We need a certain% of people to get the virus (and recover) so the rate of transmission slows down.
