The cases in Italy originated from the Bavaria outbreak at the end of January.
The cases in Bavaria were active before the end of January, possibly as early as January 15th.

The reason Germany seemed to have things under control was because they readied labs throughout the country to distribute testing in January. Either the authorities were preparing for a potential outbreak in Europe or they already knew it was in their population. Given how the German government has behaved trying to buy up an entire years production of ventilator equipment from a company in Switzerland and then announcing they were banning the export of medical resources themselves I would not be surprised to learn at a later date that it has been rampant in the country.

Merkel was heavily criticised within Germany for not being seen to be doing anything about the outbreak and then she rocked the world with her prediction of 60~70% infection within the German population. A professor from a university in Boston said at the time, that such numbers would only be possible if the virus had been in the population for a significant period of time before it was contained.

People are still so clueless in the UK. A prominent enough UK breast cancer survivor who is also a doctor and not long finished with treatment put up a tweet yesterday evening wondering whether or not she should go to the gym. Seriously, like? She is at least getting admonished in the replies. She’s in a position of influence. She should know better.

Q: What do you call someone who came bottom of their class in med school ?

    A:
    Doctor

UK, Netherlands and Sweden adopting ‘herd immunity’ strategy. Wouldn't dismiss it as a strategy out of hand. Will be interesting to see the results when things settle down.

UK not so much anymore, no idea about Netherlands or Sweden.

There was some discussion the other day about insurance cover for businesses closing down. This relates to the UK but there was already a newspaper report that the same thing applied to Ireland:

"The Association of British Insurers confirmed payouts will not happen without an "enforced closure" notice, but said this was irrelevant for the vast majority of businesses because they are unlikely to have purchased cover providing for an infectious disease."

Cinemas, restaurants, airlines, gyms, so many things are about to go bust. The days of cheap travel are over I think. So many industries are gone, even trying to bring them back will take a long time.

200,000 retail jobs expected to go by the weekend we are now living in a very different world.

I wish people would stop using the phrase 'flattening the curve' when they mean something else.

It appears the UK were going to try mitigation (AKA flattening the curve) which means keeping the infection rate R0 of the virus above 1.0 but attempting to keep the peak below the maximum the NHS could handle while attempting to isolate elderly and vulnerable people. They have since said that after updating the model with real ICU requirements from Italy and elsewhere they are no longer pursuing this policy and have switched to suppression (R0 < 1.0).
    https://www.imperial.ac.uk/media/imperial-college/medicine/sph/ide/gida-fellowships/Imperial-College-COVID19-NPI-modelling-16-03-2020.pdf

Other countries (for example the Netherlands) may still be pursuing a 'flatten the curve'/mitigation though.

    Report from yesterday 16 March.
Rutte said that imposing a complete lockdown "may seem attractive on the face of it, but experts point out that it wouldn't be a matter of days or weeks. In that scenario, we would actually have to shut down our country for a year, or even longer, with all the consequences that follow."

Instead, Rutte said that his government had chosen to control the risk of the virus as far as possible in order to build up immunity to the virus — which “may take months or even longer” — and to make sure that the hospitals have enough capacity to help sick patients.

    https://www.politico.eu/article/dutch-pm-mark-rutte-we-wont-impose-national-lockdown-coronavirus-covid19/

The UK's (and Ireland too I think, though the government hasn't been explicit) position is to suppress the current outbreak and switch to a lockdown/suppress cycle for up to 18 months. This is in no way 'flattening the curve'

Interesting article in Wired on the science behind the big shift in the UK's coronavirus strategy.

Does it mention that their original decision was based on using data for viral pneumonia rather than Covid-19?

Have other countries banned trade with China until they shut everything and anything that could have been the source of this?

We are heavily reliant on China for a lot of products. China is also helping fight this pandemic.

I also don’t think is fair to start placing blame even though I completely disagree with wet markets etc. ....collectively every country should look at how we are treating and intensively farming animals. Unfortunately it was It was probably only a matter of time before something like this happened.

I’m not saying we need to stop farming but as a species but think we need to reflect on what is ethical and how we are treating our planet

Make that higher now, big lay offs coming from Bookmakers also, there is panic in head offices with Aintree getting cancelled , now the Euros delayed and all racing in UK and most other EU countries suspended.

It matters when you lockdown. Early the better. Everything doesn't magically disappear when you put a lockdown. If there has been widespread infection then lockdown will do little.

And many of the reports/graphs I've seen suggest that it does work but - as you say - not immediately. Towns in the north of Italy showing a marked downturn in cases, a couple of weeks after having been locked down. I would imagine that it will take a time for these types of figures to translate to the national ones, but looks like a lockdown is working.

We are going the same way Italy are going with our failure to impose stricter lock downs.

We enforced our lockdown earlier than the Italians. They also didn't adhere to theirs so the government had to get stricter.

For the most part, the vast majority of our country have keep their distance. Was out on Sunday, loads walking but no one interacting, everyone is hyper aware of their hygiene now too...these things will have a big impact on numbers.

In fairness, thanks to their great leadership in government, for being so ****ing stupid during all this, people might be slightly confused about what really to do or how to act.

    UK is a **** show.

Does anyone think if a shutdown of all airlines is possible shortly? And on another note, an Ireland lockdown? Seems like the UK could possibly be heading for one of the media is to believed

Deaths in Europe from coronavirus over the last two weeks approaching 3,000 now, same death toll as China which is about twice as large as Europe and in about 1/4 of the amount of time

Not even the experts know, it will depend on what happens between now and then.

This is much bigger than I expected shocking.

It shows how selfish and disconnected from reality those people are who are crying about not been able to go out on the piss.

Even those of us who have jobs rely on selling to everybody else how long will that last.

Scary times we are living in.
