Maybe the fact, the majority of land in Singapore is publicly owned, keeping their housing and accommodation markets in check, is one of main reasons why the country has done so well

Total nonsense. Singapore is the pinnacle of free market capitalism. Bernie and Corbyn acolytes will never admit to that. A country where people arent bending over backwards to accommodate the ‘vulnerable’.
Yes they have public housing, of piss poor quality and in total B locations. Rest is all privatized.

Enjoying the Liverpool thread on boards immensely. They are really worried. Even if it all works out and the league is finished and they are crowned champions the squirming that is going on now is a joy to watch.

    Yawn

In our office, people usually fight like cats and dogs. Department A whinges about Department B, IT and HR cant ever do anything without getting slated and so on.

This crisis has brought people together in a way that no amount 'team bonding days' ever could.

People are helping each other and looking out for each other in a genuine way. Politics are out the window.

If we get through it, there will be a massive boost in team spirit.

This week at work was a bit like the week before Christmas, as the employees set up for remote working headed off home until who-knows-when. Lots of "see you soon we hope" and "stay safe" instead of "Happy Christmas" and "See you next year."

The majority of land in Singapore is publicly owned, fact! This is preventing their housing and accommodation markets from becoming rent seeking as many such markets have become in other countries such as ours. There is no such thing as a truly free market economy on the planet, as all economies have some elements of government interaction and state bodies, interacting with none state bodies, you're living in a free market fallacy, it's a figment of your imagination

    You ever lived in Singapore???
HDB Flats in Singapore are sold on a 99-year lease agreement. State is a freeholder yes, but these are still sold

    There's still hope...

"Doctors in Shanghai have already used the plasma therapy with newly infected coronavirus patients in China and have reported promising early results. Japan's largest drugmaker, Takeda Pharmaceuticals, has also begun testing the therapy."

Put it this way, the world is in better shape to deal with this regarding advancement in technology and medicine than it was in 1918.

If you are a science and medical geek there's some good articles on here..

The annoyingly stupid anti-science,anti-vax brigade will final be told to shut up and shown for the absolute nonsense it is

I hope so. But I know one anti-vaxxer in particular who I absolutely guarantee will be convinced that this virus was created and released on purpose by big pharma.

Yup. One usually very sensible guy I know has a blind spot around medicine and health. "Natural therapies" and the like, though isn't particularly anti vaxx. Well he's convinced covid was born in a lab and it's fake news and more like a flu. He's a really sound bloke, but it's a conversation I just can't have with him, because it makes him sound like a dribbling moron. And he's really not. Way more sensible than me. Usually.

Many worry about Artificial Intelligence. I worry far more about Organic Idiocy.

Well I started a thread to share daily good news on the Corona virus but it seems to have been merged into here, a thread with no positivity at all. Great.

Shake-up of the Chinese government. More human rights/freedoms and better working conditions for the people hopefully.

Maybe more funding will start to go towards medical science around the world instead of the military hoovering it all up (I'm looking at you America).

    Enough bad news around.
    But

Lots more people eating home-cooked meals.
Greater awareness of hand hygiene and flu prevention.
Getting those few jobs around the house done.
Employers more willing to allow work from home.
    Online learning and videoconferencing boom.

but apart from that, what has the Coronavirus ever done for us?

To puncture the sense of historical presentism - the judgement modern Ireland is so much more evolved the traditional one. In prior times, the intuitions that had to deal with the prevaling illnesses of the time had to do the best with limited resources and knowledge and have been judged harshly for it. Perhaps time to look at the beam in one's own eye.

Maybe the realisation that washing your hands is more effective than people realise.

I can't find any other positive thing.

People will eventually get bored of this, some bigger news item will occur and life will revert to normal.

Maybe people will start listening to scientists now? Many predicted we were due a global pandemic and pointed out that our globalised world was vulnerable. Then when the virus first appeared scientists warned this virus could cause a pandemic but nobody was really listening. Guess what they’re right about climate change too.

For all the ignorant pricks joking about mass deaths of the elderly freeing up housing, sorting out pension issues, they won't be some smugly flippant about peoples loved ones being wiped out if Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 does a Spanish flu on it and comes back next season with a new age profile in mind

Depends on how nihilistic you are about humanity. From another point of view, outbreaks like these, along with natural disasters etc, are the planet's immune system working to contain the plague that is human overpopulation. Forget about which humans benefit and which humans suffer - the planet itself is unquestionably better off if there are fewer of us around, and it doesn't particularly matter in planetary terms which demographic of humans get reduced. There are too many of us and something has to give eventually, if it's not COVID-19 it'll be Yellowstone or some other catastrophe. Exponential growth cannot continue indefinitely on a planet with limited resources, it's as simple as that.
