So the line we are being fed about it only affecting the old is not entirely true? Are there any stats? How many young people without underlying health issues have died?

I think the issue is there are two facts being announced, on one hand 80% of cases will be mild, as in not hospitalised. And most deaths are in elderly. But they are not the same fact. Young people will be in that 20% and will get very sick. It just won't kill them. If enough of them take up ICU beds by being careless in minding themselves, then they may keep an older person out of that bed that would otherwise survive though...

How to actually have a conversation about something that isn’t the CoronaVirus?

Looking at BBC news now, it looks like UK has basically stopped testing. They are advising anyone with symptoms to self isolate for 7 days, with no test. Only if they need hospitalisation will they be tested. So the UK numbers are going to be very low from now on - and their death rate vis a vis confirmed cases should start to get higher and higher.

I suppose that's to be expected after the UK's Chief Medical Advisor said yesterday he thought the true number of cases in the UK could be between 5000 and 10000, versus the reported 596 (yesterday), roughly 10-20 times more, so reported cases are only really an estimate.

Does this apply to NI?? If yes this will several reduce the effect whatever containment strategy is enforced in the ROI. Maybe it will be the Coronavirus reinstating a border on this island, not Brexit :-/

In any case we should stop passenger flights and ferries immediately from the UK unless they change their strategy. Let them try it and see how it works.

The rotten b*stards have seemingly managed to keep it under control in their own country or possibly on the other side of it. Released it into Italy by sending their own into what is essentially the centre of Europe. And now sit and watch as we struggle. Can’t help but say this has an eerie feeling to it. The Chinese ... you couldn’t put anything past them

Considering the mayor of Florence organised a hug a Chinese tourist campaign in January, I don't think we can blame the Chinese for letting it into Italy. Apparently there are lots of Chinese workers in the Italian textile industry, but who knows exactly when it arrived and by whom.

Much of the early reports from Asia suggested it could be contagious without symptoms, and the incubation period could be as long as 3 weeks. Yet, many authorities across the world chose to overlook this. Even the HSE in the case of the Clare doctor. The advice for travelers from ski resorts was to self isolate, but only if you had symptoms.

The current situation was foreseeable a month ago by anyone paying full attention.

I am fully convinced that this is a biological weapon.

The main reason I have for not believing that it is man made is that I don’t think humans have the capacity to engineer something this deadly and disruptive.

This virus is super contagious, incredibly well balanced to spread and also very lethal (extremely rare balance) and once it began to spread uncontrolled it was almost certain to cause the crippling of entire country’s health systems and the entire global economy.

If it’s a weapon it’s up there with Oppenheimer’s. I hope we don’t have the ability to make something like this. It is the Raptor of viruses.

Poland just reinstated borders, closed majority of them, grounded all international flights and international trains. Only 'on wheels' crossing the border allowed. Only nationals allowed to enter the country with few exceptions for non-nationals normally residing in Poland. Obligatory 14 days quarantine for everyone passing the border. Hefty financial fines (5000 PLN) for breaking the quarantine. All travelers will be health tested on borders and will be asked to fill forms with contacts, quarantine address etc.

All this while Ireland 'advises' to restrict movements after flying from Spain in Italy.

    Thoughts?

My thoughts are that's proper leadership.

I’m very new here. I actually joined to ask about solar panels for a house but then this virus kicked off.

Is there a way to sticky these things or have a separate thread?

I think there might be some value to an essay type answer on a specific topic or question every couple of days but I have no idea if this is allowed or even wanted.

I’d appreciate people who know what is allowed and possible giving advice on this. Or just telling me to F off with myself which I’m sure some will do ;)

You could pm a mod and do an AMA

If you used that estimate for Ireland. We would have 900 - 1800 cases in the republic.

Oh Dr. Tony who wanted nursing homes to throw their doors open again and was upset they took action early to minimize deaths?
Yeah, that's him and it was about managing the process, not being upset. There have been no deaths to minimise. Guess, you think you can do a better job than him!

No social fucking distancing whatsoever

Meanwhile, Poland is closing all its borders incl. international flights, pubs and restaurants will be closed and shopping malls operating restricted hours. Few pharmacy chains introduced a limit of products 1 person can buy to prevent hoarding.

By next week, trade would be hugely down anyway so it wouldn't be a big step.
