Yeah. An election consists of asking every member of every local community to go to the exact same location as a constant flow of people across the day. If you deliberately wanted to spread the virus you wouldn't do it very differently!

I think they are in a bit of a denial ... a bit like our own government about the parade for a while.

It is obvious the event can't take place, but they don't want to make a decision as it seems like it is too important an even to cancel it.

I think your not taking into account the characteristics of the virus, I.e the incubation period and the asymptomatic transmission. That’s understandable it was discussed at length in the first few threads but now the threads move so fast and with more reactive comments. Essentially, the issue is contagion, and this virus is incredibly balanced to promote spread.

In rural sparsely populated areas the virus should spread slower. However, these areas still have community centres, a point at which several people interact. There will always be people who travel between one or several of these centres. The disease will still spread readily if there are no containment measures. The past two outbreaks of Ebola occurred in small rural villages. Cases still spread like wildfire.

To be fair that's not really a problem, you could consolidate foreign students in the same housing blocks and free-up completelty empty ones. Back in my days in student housing that is what they did in the summer to free up some blocks as rentals for tourists or kids summer camps.

But now is it necessary or practical to do what the OP said? I don't know.

I can only speak on the setup in my Department.

Currently the plan is for normal hours to continue but unnecessary travel stopped and most meetings cancelled and for staff to work from home when possible.

Everyone higher grade had a laptop that allows them to work from home. So thats what they are going to do.

Everyone lower doesnt so they have to work in the office.

Obviously its not a thought out plan. I expect drama tomorrow and next week.

Public awareness has certainly been raised with the schools closing today and RTÉ have been broadcasting non-stop pandemic coverage all day. But I actually don't think many people I know have the actual ability to process the real ramifications of what this will mean in a couple of weeks yet.

I think people with some experience of trauma have an idea of the coping mechanisms required to deal with what will probably be bereavement on a mass scale with no funerals. But nobody living today has actually gone through an event of this magnitude so it will probably mean a whole generation of those who are left dealing with serious emotional issues and PTSD.

Yeah, some will say that China did this as a communication exercise, but regardless of the motivation they did what no-one else did, and this is not just PR as they actually sent good quantities of very useful stuff (each ventilator they sent will have a direct and immediate consequence of sparing multiple lives, that is significant).
