My four-year-old bottle of hand sanitizer has waited patiently for its time and now it's thriving.

doesn't mention rare or illegal on Wikipedia regarding Thailand

Wikipedia isn't the be all and end all. Thailand are coping extremely well with this virus and should be used as an example to other countries.

I have followed this since early January and was concerned throughout that the media and government weren't giving it much attention at all.

Now its like they are in overdrive, did anyone else notice the fear in the two Simons faces recently?

They know how bad this is and how bad its going to get....

I really hope there are experts working around the clock trying to figure this virus out and that we have some positive news soon.

Can you imagine the world brought to a standstill by something we cannot even see?

Just learning that my friend whom I was with yesterday evening for a coffee and a catch up was sent home early from work today with a fever and sore throat. I told her to call GP, but seriously? Not panicky or anything.

Most likely to be just a cold or perhaps the beginning of a flue. She hasn’t been abroad so I’m not too worried, but all this hysteria would make you think otherwise.

Sneezing in to your elbow is idiotic, your aim is going to be all over the shop.

And to think the mother used to kill us for wiping our noses on our sleeves! How things have changed!

The virus expert was trying to point this out on CB but the alarmists were having none of it.

I'm pretty sure he said he was extremely sceptical that 50% of the population could get the virus given that it is difficult to transmit.
He's a virologist not an epidemiologists, opinion, not his field of expertise. Further point, populations have a certain level of immunity to flu viruses but none to Covid-19.

LOL there’s no way we will have 10,000 cases by week 10. Not a chance. We are having a very slow spread since last Thursday. If we reach 1,000 cases by week 10 I’ll be surprised.

I do hope you're correct. I fully expect Italy, France, Spain , Germany , Denmark, The Netherlands, The UK , Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, The US etc will all be at 10k inside a 10 week period from 24 cases onwards* I don't think we will be any different.

Assuming the world continues to not take drastic measures*

Italy had 40 cases 2.5 weeks ago...

Presume you still believe (as per last week I think) everything should carry on as normal in Ireland, there is no problem at all & the real danger here is the public panic & the economic damage from that?

To put a rhetorical question, if you believe it is all absolute crazy-talk/scaremongering nonsense, why are they doing it?

IMO as well as medical advice they must be getting they are seeing same news/events as you & I, what Italy has been dealing with, what is shaping up elsewhere in Europe.

They are not god like figures who know what the right level of response is to this + calibrate the public message perfectly.

Surely we realise that about our politicians, lord knows we give them all enough stick for the many mistakes they make.

Was not listening to it but read some reactions here. I think they are putting grim worst case scenarios to the people to try to get them ready to accept unpalatable measures that might be necessary on the advice of public health experts in the future days & weeks.

What good comes of telling the nation's OAPs : 'Most of you will have the corona virus soon and many of you will die'?

That's pretty much what happened tonight. They automatically know they are the at risk group.

Save it for emergencies, use ordinary soap and warm water and do a thorough job.

I'm going to try practice social distancing, only go places when necessary no browsing shops, cafe, pub ect.
Would be great if we had leadership that could motivate people to take steps to keep numbers of people with virus down.

It's coming to the time that I will do this too.
I'm 46; I met my parents yesterday and reinforced the point of social distancing to them.

My mam, 68, is very aware, and asking me for advice. My dad, 75, a bit more relaxed, as dads tend to be.

Might limit my physical contact with my parents soon, keep it to the phone calls.

That's certainly not stopping the ten million alarmists and panic merchants holding forth with great authority on social media.

I don't know maybe to give them a chance to try and avoid the thing?

It would be much worse if they started dying and nobody warned them of the risks.

Yeah that's what I'm doing, sanitizer wrecks my hands so I only use it when there's no other option - reckon this one bottle will do me for the foreseeable. (touch wood)

    That sounds totally unprepared.

One of my friends works in the University sector, and can work from home, but uses their own laptop.

Seems that most staff in public have desktops rather than laptops?

Hard to work from home then.

My sister In law works in a university, admin role. They were told today that academics have laptops so can work from home. Students can learn from home. Admin staff have desktops so must be in the office. She can’t roll her chair back without hitting someone so no social distancing for her. Those with children will possibly be exempt. So she will have to work and she’ll have to cover her colleagues workloads

The taps in our work loos are all screw handles and only hand dryers so you wash your hands, but as soon as you turn the water off, you’re contaminated again. :

Desktops aren't welded on. When my son was in DCU, I carted his massive gaming rig with 3 monitors to and from Limerick at least twice a year. This is an emergency. You do, you don't make excuses.

I don't think hysteria is the correct word with a highly contagious active virus doing the rounds.

We underestimate old folks sometimes - they've lived through a lot of scary stuff in their time, and most of us can testify that despite being more vulnerable they tend to be less anxiety-ridden about health threats like this current one. I think when you get to a certain age you develop a certain 'whatever will be, will be' attitude. It's perfectly understandable - when you reach old age any number of things can take you, you know? Not to be blunt about it.

Italy might be a bogus example and comparison. It's very possible many hundreds of people already had the virus in mid Feb (which in turn would suggest the alarming spike in case numbers never actually happened).

It did happen, but maybe it just happened a while ago rather than today

Agree on a unity Govt. It was discouraging to see Leo state in the Sindo that a unity Govt with SF would harm the Covid 19 response. Very immature comment in these times.

Time to put party alliances to the side for the good of the country and work together.

Simon Coveney should be installed Taoiseach.

    Good night.

Can you honestly see sf agreeing to any initiative decision of FG or vice versa?

Anyone know what will happen to court cases and in particular criminal cases where people are remanded in custody awaiting sentence? District courts have hundreds of people turning up every day and i dare say that a lot of them aren't too concerned about hygene. Court sittings can't really just stop when people's liberty is at stake.
