As opposed to the flights that drive here overland.

They dont want students to potentially lose a third of the year. Especially those in 3rd/6th year.

Time to postpone the exams, to autumn and let the students have an early holiday now?

    .04 per million

Schools in north Dublin informing students to take home books day by day this week. They’re also setting up online learning on office 365 so students can’t communicate with teachers should schools close. Do schools know more info than we know?

    Sensible contingency/continuity planning.

    I see it differently.

There is a time and a place to advertise and get exposure. But surely not on our national day. It smacks of national insecurity and a lack of pride.

I don't think that a normal person feels insecurity or lack of pride when our leaders meet with the leader of the USA

Looking at Italy on the map they are a peninsula and surrounded by the alps both geographical traits which could protect the countries around them , unlikely though !

Didn't keep Hannibal out did it?

The means of transmission nowadays are far more rapid than a ship, or a line of march.
People on the French Cote commute to Italy daily and vice versa, same on the Swiss and Austrian borders.

Think of the N.I border and how people living in the area have ties on both sides and regularly cross back and forth?

Multiply that by an order of magnitude for many of the border areas of mainland Europe west of Austria.

It's not just closing a border, after 50yrs of integration and 25yrs of Schengen borderless travel...

Mainland Europeans are in for a serious culture shock with restricted border crossings, particularly the under 30s who've never known anything but hopping across and back as they please.

Some people on here will be gutted if he recovers.
I don't believe that for one second.
    Please.

If the fella on RTE was any more chilled about it he'd be in the freezer. Very positive interview.

Maybe RTE and the HSE doped him..

Heard the local Secondary school were sent home today, I'm in North Co. Dublin
    Where in North Co. Dublin?

It was just on the news there now. Interview in full will be on the Claire Byrne programme.

Just a fever he said with no other apparent complications. Hopefully it turns out that way for the large majority who may catch it.

How's Poland doing in all this?

They're more concerned about catching the GAY than covid-19. 'a third of poland declared ‘lgbt-free zone’' https://balkaninsight.com/2020/02/25/a-third-of-poland-declared-lgbt-free-zone/

Especially at this vital time leading up to exams. The potential disruption must be worrying for leaving cert students.

The lockdown doesn`t come into effect until tomorrow though so presumably all flights from and to Italy will be stopped from then as well? If not then it will be another farce.

Beginning to try and map the cases on this in Ireland on the site linked yesterday, will try and add some county/province breakdowns as more information is released. If anyone has any suggestions I'd love to hear them.

I just don't think a 30 minute meeting is that important. It is common for successive US presidents not to even know who the Irish "prime minister" even is. It's embarrassing for us.

I have no doubt that if this meeting stopped, it would have absolutely zero consequences for anyone. It will save the state money.

It's also interesting that the same people who criticise Trump the most are the ones who support this kind of stuff.

    That's a no then? :p

Yeh didn't hear in the UK chatting about it so?

She had cold like symptoms for a couple of days - and then suddenly felt grand for a few days - and then some days later woke up one morning with her room spinning seriously ill.

Seems to have on off effects on people as it progresses.

Seems to effect people in different ways.

I think the RTE interview proves that there's probably a load of people have it here and don't even realise. Little to no symptoms.

    It won't be.

How long would the public have to wait? I don't think the govt would try and hide it more so perhaps the family would want to try and keep it private or maybe an autopsy has to be performed?

In all fairness to everyone else, anyone who goes shouldn’t be allowed back in to the country.

Would be disastrous : they can't just postpone doing their Leaving Cert for a few months and being out of school in the run up to it would be very stressful.

It that not the general consensus, for the vast majority this will be a minor illness. That's not taking away from the dreadful impact it will have on some patients.

This article was published last month (15 Feb 2020) and written by Laurie Garrett, a former senior fellow on global health for the Council on Foreign Relations.

    https://foreignpolicy.com/2020/02/15/coronavirus-xi-jinping-chinas-incompetence-endangered-the-world/

During the week of this article's publication, some 440 experts in infectious diseases gathered in Geneva to help WHO solve the mysteries that surround the virus.
One of them was Hong Kong University’s Gabriel Leung, who does not think China’s strategy will succeed and fears that as schools reopen and millions of people return to Wuhan and other locked-down cities, the virus could, once again, surge. And it could spread far beyond China’s borders, possibly infecting more than 60 percent of the world population.

Even if the coronavirus disease kills only 1 percent of its victims, 1 percent of 60 percent of 7 billion people is a staggering death toll
, placing the coronavirus alongside the three biggest pandemics of human history—the 14th-century plague, the 1918 influenza, and the current HIV/AIDS toll.

It would be over two-thirds of the death toll of World War Two.
