The Princess cruise line in particular is not having a good outbreak!

And yet twitter this morning was full of people giving out because their Royal Princess cruise was cancelled at the last minute. They were given a full refund and a voucher worth a whole new cruise in the future and so many people are livid. I'd have been so, so relieved that the infected staff member was confirmed before I got on the ship, ecstatic to have a full refund and a free cruise to look forward to whenever this is all over. But there was just so much anger about it.

And other cruise passengers from the Carnival Panorama complaining that they were delayed boarding because the passengers of the previous cruise were being held on board waiting for test results from a sick passenger. (Who was negative in the end.) They just really can't wait to get on. There was also interviews with Australian people about to embark the Ruby Princess who are just sure they won't get sick on it and definitely won't die if they do. It's kind of crazy. Being stuck on a ship while the illness infects hundreds of people would be a nightmare.

The weather today in Singapore is a high of 32 and a low of 26. Looking at historical data it has been that warm since at least mid Feb. We are hoping for a summer reprieve and we wouldn't hit anything like those temps.

People congregate indoors less in summer and longer days and more sunshine in summer lead to higher vitamin D and melatonin which means better immune system. So even if the temperature on surfaces etc make no difference, you'd hope that there would still be some respite.

Being a country where it's summer every day of the year does seem to be helping them.
Humidity could be a factor (they're usually 90% damp).

Mid-summer at 53oN also means more continious light: a much longer dust to dawn. However that's still 3.5 months away.

S.America is heading to winter which might be an interesting watch for the lower coucntreis.
Aussies & SA don't really get a winter, except for Melbourne for a few short months.

Triage... happens every time there is a glut of really sick people and finite resources to treat them, like in a disaster or a war situation.

Not great news for our elderly and fragile... most likely to suffer from the disease and least likely to get intensive care.

    :-(

It will just to who is more important. The "right" elderly will get treated.

Declare Summer early and pray for sunny weather now!

We might be lucky in this regard : normally flu season starts to taper down in March and is usually regarded as over by April.

If things are going to get bad, will we end up with dirty water? How will we wash our hands?

There are some interesting threads being translated from Chinese social media with stories just like those described above, by the way.

I'd be slightly more concerned about what we would drink.

As can be seen from a comparison of death rates and causes of death between 1916 and 2014. People are far more concerned with things which will never kill them than with things which probably will. Like lifestyle and smoking. Or believing nonsense about vaccines.

    https://www.cso.ie/en/releasesandpublications/ep/p-1916/1916irl/bmd/deaths/

    exactly

on average 125 people die from Smoking related disease EVERY WEEK!

I'm beginning to wonder, would the government be better off handing over the control of this to the Department of Agriculture. I'm not just being sarcastic (well partially I am) but they do genuinely have a lot more experience of pandemic control of animal diseases.

I don't think it is fair to say they got it straight out of the gate. Their handling of patient 1 (the lad going in and out of A+E) was a mess and led to a very quick move from cases->clusters-> community transmission. We appear to be actually handing the initial cases in a better fashion, though I still suspect we are already at community transmission (the doubling rates over the next two weeks will tell us).

We may be at community transmission for sure.

But if you want to extrapolate numbers, you need to look at models that are applicable here. That means, for one thing, looking at countries that got their first case at a similar time as we did, at a similar level of readiness, with similarly sized population centres.

There are just so many variables, it makes absolutely no sense to look at China and hysterically suggest that complete and total shutdown is the only way we're going to save ourselves.

Any gloves you wear out and about are a bonus. I know if I was out using a shopping trolley for example I'd have gloves on. Even a pair of leather gloves would be fine. Gloves you can stick in the microwave would be ideal, minute in microwave kills everything.

Rubber gloves, or any gloves might make one really big mess of a microwave, just wash them in 60oC+ soapy water, they'll dry themselves.

Carry a small Alchohol spray (or gel) for trolleys, they're manky most of the time anyway regardless. Spary also if handling any cash.

They waited until the sunshine killed off Foot and Mouth. Will that work for this virus?

You can't buy alcohol cleansers. Nobody seems to have any stock left.

Government is going to need to throw never before seen funding and measures to keep small businesses and the self employed afloat if this goes badly wrong

Many will go to the wall through no fault of their own if government does not act fast

If they don't spend now there will be a lot less tax to collect when we come out the other side of this

according to this website China has only had 80,000 cases for a population of 1 Billion - Why are we expecting around 40% infecions when China where the number of infections are now reducing daily only had 80,000 , given the poplulation of Wuhan the epi -centre is 11 million.

    https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/#countries

Containment. China contained it mostly to one province.

In Europe we missed the boat on containment. You can still fly directly from northern italy to most places.

Half assed containment doesnt work. It has to be all or nothing.

Not one person I've handed over money to in various different shops in the last few days has been wearing gloves.

Gloves are good but not sure if microwave will kill it unless damp enough to boil them. Better use surgical spirit or rubbing alcohol.

They sacrificed the housing market in Dublin for generations for the sake of the Hotel industry.

Why are we shocked FG are OK with giving the tourist industry 1 good week over the health of the public?

    They are pointless.

You can't get the virus through your hands.

Just pay with your phone! You don't have to touch anything or even enter your pin.
Unless you're a Bank of Ireland customer, it's basically available to all other debit card issuing banks.

Not really. It is not even that they are not as sealed, but you won’t use your regular gloves as medical gloves, ie change for a new pair regularity never touch the outside of the gloves themselves after using them.

Always wash your hands before putting on the gloves otherwise the virus could live nice and snug inside for a few days waiting for you to use again and spread it back on to your hands.

It seems to be fairly rampant in Italian government at the moment. Governor of Piedmont is positive, and RAI is reporting the Italian Army Chief of Staff is also.

Let's hope their/our government systems are strong enough to cope with leaders being out of action recovering.

I've seen a few but most don't shops should be doing more. Also money itself is a carrier are there any steps to disinfect it at any level?
