But cancelling the parade only and leaving everything else open would smack of a PR stunt.

I'm not sure people are thinking things through here. If the parade is "unsafe", then surely Croker, the Aviva, the Tallaght Stadium, Fairyhouse and every other outdoor venue in the country is unsafe too.

The international travel is the main issue and also applies to big sporting games like Euro 2020 or the Six Nations. LOI, GAA games etc are a lower risk unless we have an outbreak here, at which point they should also go.

As of midday, there have been 0 positive cases of COVID-19 in my hospital. 19 tests today.

Latest UK number of confirmed cases is 85.
Quite a jump from yesterday's 53 and indicative of community spread.

It's more than that. People travel for the parade and it becomes a day long celebration in every indoor or outdoor pub and venue across Ireland.

Every pub in the country is busy at the weekend. If you're looking at shutting down St Patricks Day, then you would have to look at shutting everything else (does the risk mysteriously vanish on March 18th?)

If that is the best source we are in trouble. It says Ireland has just 1 confirmed case and it was in Offaly.

:D FFS. That's just where they put the dot and it says two confirmed cases.

You can add walking down O Connell street to that list. Or entering any shopping centre in country. Cancelling events here and there and restricting flights from Italy is totally pointless.

I’m dying to get the call to self isolate. 2 weeks off.

If you're dying it will be more than 2 weeks.....

The parade was cancelled in 2001 for foot and mouth, there is precedence.
    Other events were also cancelled.

And we already deemed the Aviva stadium unsafe for the Italian rugby game.

France deemed the Paris half-marathon unsafe but are otherwise making distinctions between enclosed events and outdoor events for greater than 5000 participants.

It is looking likely that some soccer games across Europe will be played behind closed doors, especially games between teams from different countries.

I listened to Simon Harris at lunchtime on RTE and I thought he came across extremely balanced speaking about the direction the government were taking and the advice he was taking from medical experts.

We are close to a tipping point here where people on twitter, Facebook, here on boards are so confident of their knowledge of what is required that this opinion is being forced into the public domain as the way to proceed.

You start panicking here and all of a sudden people are going mad shopping for doomsday scenarios spreading all sorts of rumour around the place.
I would much rather take my advice from health experts who know what they are talking about than listening to the likes of Teresa on liveline who knows everything about everything and will not listen to anyone who opposes her point of view.
The level of hysteria and rubbish being posted online and through WhatsApp is not helping anyone, just causing a lot of noise and hindering the process of getting is through this issue.

RTE could do worse than shutting down liveline for month or two, pure uninformed opinion from people with time on their hands to worry and ring a radio station...

I stopped trusting RTE and the HSE/Dept of Health when their opinions and statements started to contradict WHO guidelines.

This will be around for two years at least. Its a reality that we are just going to have to live with and adapt our lives around the associated disruption. Right know we are in a state of flux because there are quite a few unknowns and its shocking for us all but after this transition we will become accustomed to it, learn to live with it and life will go on as normal as possible.

There is a lot of different emotions being displayed by people as they get to grips with this new reality. Panic, Denial, normalcy bias, calmness and even anger. Eventually most of us will all on be the same rational page but not before we reach peak flux.

As always, humans will learn to adapt to the new reality as has happened over the ages.

"A Miami woman said Monday that she was told by doctors at Jackson Memorial Hospital that she “most likely” contracted coronavirus while traveling in Italy, but was not tested and was instead sent home to self-quarantine because state and federal health officials refused to authorize an official screening,"

International travel will continue apace with or without St Patricks Day, the 6 Nations or Euro 2020.

The authorities have to look at this sensibly. They can't just shut down major events for the sake of shutting them down or to appease the internet panic merchants.

If you're going to cancel them, you should be looking at cancelling just about everything.

Panic can manifest itself in different ways. For example if your job is in the airline industry you may be panicking about job security and trying to play down the severity of the virus risk.

One can be highly concerned but not panicking. People are panicking, I get that, but telling others they should panic is unnecessary and counterproductive.

Surely the WHO will have to call this a pandemic. Maybe then governments around the world including our own will start taking this more seriously.

It’s insane to imagine St. Patricks Day parades proceeding all around the country. Absolute insanity.

Closing the stable door a month after the horse bolted !

And sadly we seem to be doing the same.

What in your reality is totally different as a result of this virus? Bizarre post.

A year from now this will be long since over and we’ll be vaccinated for it just like all the other stuff we get vaccinated for and then forget about.

Aviva was not deemed unsafe. What was deemed unsafe was an estimated 3,000 italians coming to Dublin from Northern Italy which is their Rugby heartland.

By cancelling the match it gives less reason for these fans to travel to the city.

What's the obsession with targeting St Patricks Day only?

Yeah i agree with you on this.

For example the Slovakia v Ireland match, headlines of it being behind closed doors etc are pointless when we have 2 cases they have 0. So long as there wasn't a major outbreak people will still travel. The media are fueling a hell of alot of the panic.
