At least the Italians are doing something. It's a start. Others will follow suit when they realise the impact on the economy if great chunks of your population are dying, in hospital or off sick for weeks.

Has Aer Lingus cancelled Flights from Dublin for the foreseeable to Northern Italy?

Was in Tesco there now to get something and they are completely out of Pasta with the exception of a few boxes of Barilla !

Just last week Swizeland confirmed their first case and today they have 100 cases. This shows how fast it spreads, and I do not believe that we just have 2 cases.

I expect to see a huge growth in our cases in next week or 2.

"ah sure look it will be grand"

    But in Italian.

Yes they also have a very effective It'll Be Grand Brigade.

"Non ci sono problemi con le nostre banche"

Roughly translates as our banks are solvent. Good thing nobody panicked then and banks were fine.

    Large chunks?
Numbers of annual deaths from flu' is up to 650K.
    Numbers from this about 3K.

I so wish the loudmouths accusing people of scaremongering at the beginning of this thread had been right. I really do.

Coronavirus Live Updates: Fatality Rate of Covid-19 Is Higher Than the Flu

Wasn't this apparent from the official stats from the beginning?
the fatality rate on closed cases is at 6% at the moment, still decreasing but only slightly now

Can you tell the difference between a year and 3 months?

Switzerland has a long land border with northern Italy and is far closer to the infected regions than Rome (which is hundreds of miles away)

If up to 85% of the people who get this, have mild symptoms and most countries are only testing very obvious cases, it’s reasonable to assume the majority of people infected will possibly never even be tested. How we get around that is simply test as many people as possible, including people with very minor symptoms. But this most likely Won’t be feasible. I don’t think we will ever truly know how much it’s spread here or anywhere else for that matter. It will Only be when things start ramping up in emergency depts which will be too late unfortunately. That’s why we have to make big decisions now.

We are still being reactive, not proactive. We can see where this is heading from other countries who got it sooner.

The HSE will eventually have to change the testing criteria, once there is enough infected people they will either have to announce for example, Cork, Galway or Dublin has become a hot spot and start testing more cases.

If you want to get into it, you got to get out of it. (Hawkwind 1982)

It's becoming clear that Covid-19 has been widespread in Wuhan up to 8 weeks before it was noticed, and the same can be said for the likes of USA, if they tested deaths in USA related to flu like illnesses in Dec, Jan so on I've no doubt a lot of them would have been Covid-19. Same goes for Italy, didn't they already come out and say that deaths in Jan are now suspected to have been Covid-19/ Explains why it's so overrun over there, it was spreading without anyone taking notice until it was too late.
I'd like to think Ireland has had a head start, that we're all doing our bit not to spread it, from washing our hands, to avoiding large groups.
I notice in stores that no longer will they hand you the receipt, they will just place it on the counter. But that's hardly helping as you still need to pick it up, but it shows that people are trying to avoid contact with others. Handling cash and coins is pretty dangerous for those who do it for hours everyday.

I couldn't understand when your man (can't remember his name - the "No, I didn't say it was a child" guy) said yesterday after announcing the second case that he didn't expect there were any other cases in Ireland, why no one asked him if he wouldn't have said the same thing the day before..

People would freak out if they said they were closing them for two months. For loads of families it will mean losing half their income for a period of time while one parents stays home, and businesses will really struggle to keep going.

On s related note, the French government actually just announced that for each child attending a closed school, one parent will be issued with a medical certificate and fully entitled for sick pay.

Italy could do the same but the burden on the state and on private companies would be massive.

We receive ongoing HSE updates and make our decisions based on this, international / EU recommendations and risk assessments, not social media thankfully.

Well they must be very reassuring. You're a lucky man.

So what have they been telling you that makes you feel so calm and confident?

Without a shadow of a doubt. We have far great numbers than 2. The nature of this virus means it is IMPOSSIBLE to stop. We will start to see more and more cases in the next 1-2 weeks. We need to cancel St. Patricks day. We need to stop flights to certain parts of the world.

I have friends who are working for the NHS and they have been told there will be an announcement made in the next 3-4 hours to confirm that the UK has a sharp increase in cases today and that the UKs head virologist has said that it is now spreading uncontained within communities.

Hey lads! Don't worry. Simon Harris just announced that Leo will chair a special cabinet subcommittee to discuss the crisis. They are meeting for the first time next Monday.

    Jesus wept.

Serious vibe of disinterest from Leo since the election.

How is it spreading so quickly, since it's supposed to be less transmissable than flu ?

I haven't gotten the flu in 26 years (touches wood)..

UK announcement time is normally 2pm I think. They had 2 in Scotland this morning.

Shutting down offices and schools can have a much worse effect then having people getting infected if you consider that people under 50 don't seem to get badly affected by the virus and they are the ones going to school and to work everyday. If anything it's important to protect the elderly in their homes by disinfecting the areas where they are staying

Distribution of laboratory confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the EU/EEA, the UK, San Marino, Monaco, Switzerland and Andorra, as of 4 March 2020

    novel-coronavirus-cases-EU-UK-4-March-2020.PNG?itok=2AFGfuA2

The daily total of cases in Europe continues it's upward trend.

Not sure how to explain Italy's figures for yesterday, looks like a glitch.

    :-(

2pm for the briefing I think.

Currently 3 new cases today, but may be more announced soon?
