Yes, but it still kills about 55,000 a year even today.

Odd how it appears to be taking off in the US too. I really would have thought transmission would have been a lot more intense in the highly populated East of Asia rather than the western countries but seems to be taking a foothold in Europe more quickly than most countries neighbouring China. I wonder if it is anything to do with Europe's cold climate and old population maybe.

"Wolves players and staff have been asked to avoid any unnecessary meetings, lunches or other public engagements, and temporarily avoid casual fan interaction such as selfies or autographs.

Whilst we acknowledge that this will be disappointing for some supporters, we stress that this a temporary measure to protect the ongoing wellbeing of the Wolves squad and is a decision which has not been taken lightly.

In addition, Wolves players and staff are also being instructed to avoid shaking hands where a warm smile and personal greeting will suffice."

Temporary measure ! yeah, for the next DECADE!!!!

And also no antibiotics. I know antibiotics don't treat viral infections but they are necessary to treat bacterial infections that occur as a result of the viral disease.
On the other hand there was no international travel like we have today in 1918.

I thought this was an interesting little bit of info.
It show you how serious China are taking things.
A lot of other countries could learn some lessons.

China: Travelers from the virus hotspots of South Korea, Japan, Iran, and Italy arriving in the capital will have to be isolated and placed in a 14-day quarantine, a Beijing official said. Shanghai and Guangdong announced similar restrictions earlier.

For sure, but I believe scientists are of the opinion that conditions in 1918 were freak ones which lent themselves to the wiping out millions of people.

I figure it’s time to face facts that we’re all screwed. The flu most people get these days is a variation of the 1918 Spanish Flu. The coronavirus COVID-19 will not be wiped out. It will probably last for a hundred years or more is some variation. Everyone will catch it in the next couple of years. It’s inevitable.
It will not last 100 years! There will be a vaccine in approx 12 months and the only thing stopping it from being eradicated will be the anti-vaxxers.

I am due to travel to eastern europe Friday, I also have normal Flu symptoms ( cough, runny nose and slight fever ). There is screening for all passengers arriving into the airport and it says that people showing symtoms of coronavirus will be quarantined.

Would it be advisable to travel under these circumstances, or is there a chance I could spend 2 weeks in quarantine?

If they screen you, then yes I would expect you to end up in quarantine - so bring a book.

    A book?
You'll need the complete, unabridged works of Tolstoy for 2 weeks of quarantine.

The flu vaccine was approximately 45% effective over the last 10 years due to the new strains of flu emerging...
We don't know yet if coronavirus will be static or not.

Health authorities are struggling to track potential coronavirus victims amid fears that an infected doctor now under quarantine may have spread COVID-19 to his patients.

The virus outbreak in Australia escalated on Tuesday, with the total number of cases in NSW rising to 15, including a second case of human-to-human transmission inside Australia.

In a statement, NSW Health said a woman in her 50s had not travelled outside of Australia recently and “is believed to have acquired the illness locally”.

is in correct that the HSE are only testing those who have had contact with someone who either has it or you have travelled to an effected area? How are you meant to know if you had contact with a someone who has it if they are refusing to test people who show symptoms?

This I cannot get my head around - they state that you become a contact if you are in close contact with someone that has the virus for 15 minutes or if a carrier coughs/sneezes on you, yet if you live with someone that doesn't seem to count...? Am I missing something here?

There's a vaccine for today's flu and it still kills tens-of-thousands each year.

Malnourishment, overcrowded medical camps and hospitals, and poor hygiene plus secondary bacterial infections which killed most of the victims.

    Yes re: their test criteria.

I think if you live with someone you're bound to meet the criteria for close contact by default.

The HSE advice all along has been to self isolate if displaying flu like symptoms after returning from certain countries. It not complicated, why would the child attend band practice if showing symptoms.

Can we start blaming the parents? :P
