HSE continues to fumble. This has been their recognized pattern of behaviour for years past. I’ve no doubt medical people and nursing staff will do their best but the rest is just bumbling along.

That's what happens when you have a bunch of middle managers tooling around on six figure salaries without a clue what is going on.

Youd have to wonder about the mental health of people who put out those fake HSE letters

...and when will folks learn that this is what social media is all about (well a large % anyway) - if its real it will get confirmed and published on a "news" feed, not a "social feed".
Yes there are degrees of spoof / taste - and this one is obviously triggering an issue for a small % of the population, but if we didn't have it, then social media would be very boring.

My god what a farce. officials come out and say the letter is a hoax.

Now say it's real. Rte confirmed also just now

    rte still says it's a hoax : https://www.rte.ie/news/coronavirus/2020/0303/1119921-coronavirus/

Earlier reports circulating that the letter was a hoax are untrue.

Took me a minute. Yeah she is theoretically a test of the effectiveness of HSE self-isolation policies...

Yes they completely underestimated the cases there.

Meanwhile, where are rte getting their info from:

'The infection rate of Covid-19 is around 20% which means that 80% of people will not be infected'

    https://www.rte.ie/news/coronavirus/2020/0303/1119921-coronavirus/

I have not heard anything to suggest this figure is accurate.

You' ve got the numbers a bit mixed up there.
Infection rate numbers not available as of yet
80% of those infected will get a milder version, 20% will get a severe infection, depending on age and vulnerability.

4 cases in France are linked to Egypt , a country with high travel to China. They seem to have a potentially similar situation on their hands to Iran.

Qatar banned flights to Egypt 2 weeks ago also

Can't stress this enough. Anybody who works for the HSE will know.

I worked on a project with the HSE a few years ago. Never again. Their management layers were outstandingly incompetent and lazy.

My first shopping trip since the emergence of the first Irish case this morning, I was thinking about the practicalities of touching door handles, trolleys etc. Okay you can avoid touching your mouth & nose and wash your hands thoroughly when you get home, but if the virus was on any of those surfaces, you may have transferred it to to keys, laser card, shopping bags etc. Do I need to wipe down all those as well?
Medical guy on the radio saying picking it up from surfaces was a remote possibility, the real danger was person-to-person contact

As evidenced by this post, I'm convinced that the toll on people's mental health is going to be worse or as bad as the virus itself. As an OCD sufferer, this is ALWAYS my thought process ('everything could be contaminated') and now we have vast swathes of the population thinking like this. And once these thoughts creep in, it's almost impossible to get rid of them, even after the 'threat' has passed. A lot of these people are never going to be able to go back to thinking 'normally' again.

Have they not been a bit slow off the mark regarding this band practice? The school situation was known on Sunday night and surely the young man/ parents also communicated that he'd been at a band practice too? why the delay of a day+. Wouldn't fill you with confidence.

Could easily have a head cold, not everyone that coughs has covid 19
Exactly...I can't see people ill with coronavirus skipping around airports. We wouldn't even know we had a lot of cases here...everyone's always choking coughing in Ireland at this time of year anyway.

    That’s not quite true, benny.

Depending on the surface, the virus can last up to 9 days.

Link to how long the virus can live on different surface types: https://www.journalofhospitalinfection.com/article/S0195-6701(20)30046-3/fulltext

You can also see the efficacy of different cleaning agents against the virus on the table below it.

Its really not going to be as bad as the virus itself. This has killed thousands of people. I am sorry that you have thoughts that cause you mental harm but its not the same as death.

Depends on the type of surface.

I have just been shopping. No signs of panic buying in Nenagh, apart from hand sanitiser. I suspect some people are buying ten at a time or something.

That young fella had a suspected case on Saturday evening (it was definitely online by 9pm) and I presume it takes a few hours for test results to come through. If he got his "suspected positive test" early Saturday morning, I'd be pretty miffed at the HSE at letting him off to band practice. I'm sure he wouldn't have done it if they had told him not to.

England and Scotland have emergency powers to enforce quarantine if they had to. Do we have the same powers here? I suspect not.

The HSE need to issue an apology to all hoaxers out there for giving them a bad name today .

Problem is that many get only mild symptoms- yet may also be infectious. So yeah in all likelihood peoole wont know if they have the Corona virus or other respiratory infection. And will most certainly be in airports, shops, and other places where infection will be passed on to others who may not be so lucky ...

There's no sign of panic buying because outside of this thread the vast vast majority of people are not that bothered by it all.

Just listen to what they said to all the pupils in the school, dont isolate just minimise contact. Same thing probably said to this kid and now look

A multi-agency task force that will hit the ground running is to be established, no doubt.

They will make recommendations going forward and guidelines of scope of a future Commission for Containment of Pandemkcs .
