So confused..the journal says it's a hoax, rte says it's not a hoax...maybe life would be easier in the bunker after all 😅

Swine flu was announced as a pandemic back in 2009 but coverage would not have been as widespread as today across the likes of social media.

HSE did issue recommendations to schools etc (as they did this week again for Coronavirus) but I don't remember there being the same sense of panic or worry.

Is it because we know too much about what happens around the world these days? Ignorance is bliss and all that.

I know they are different viruses and all that but it's probably the closest scenario in recent times bar Sars, Mers, ebola which remained further away from home thankfully.

Even today people still die from swine flu Ireland.

There are a number of court cases ongoing for side effects from the vaccine that was quickly developed.

Some swine flu tidbits from 2009.

The fatality rate was only 0.03% though. Huge difference at the moment.

The journal literally just reported it was a hoax.
    Which is it?

I hope it was a hoax, or maybe its a different case because if its the same case then someone who was waiting for test results went to band practice.

About 20 times the mortality rate and a much higher Infection rate. It has the characteristics of a much greater threat

The swine flu ‘pandemic’ mortality rate was actually around 2% apparently (per epidemiologist on newstalk this morning).

Yes they completely underestimated the cases there.

Meanwhile, where are rte getting their info from:

'The infection rate of Covid-19 is around 20% which means that 80% of people will not be infected'

    https://www.rte.ie/news/coronavirus/2020/0303/1119921-coronavirus/

I have not heard anything to suggest this figure is accurate.

Yeah it would make you wonder.

If reports are true that the kids from that school who are supposed to be in isolation are out with their friends, it would you really make you question some parenting choices.

If your child is being told to isolate, not just by you but by the school and by governing bodies and by a huge percentage of the general public and if their failure to do so could potentially have widespread negative effects but you let them out with their friends anyway because ya know, that's what they want... You're kind of failing as a parent surely?!

The Hoax that wasn't a Hoax... Hard to have any trust in HSE communications if they can mess up like this over ONE SINGLE CASE. A PR person is needed asap.

The CDC has it at a much lower mortality rate than that (0.01-0.08%) for the 2009 H1N1 strain.

Having said that, I would hope that the CFR for COVID-19 will be much lower than 2% when this all settles.

The head of Iran's emergency medical services, Pirhossein Kolivand, has been infected with coronavirus, the ILNA news agency reported.

His "health is good and there is no need for concern", the office said in a statement, according to ILNA.

WTAF is going on over there?

8% of Iran's parliament are infected (23/290) Its been only recognised worldwide for about 8 weeks. The speed of infection is scary. Europe very unlikely to enforce measures anywhere like China

Have they given the center a deep clean? I highly doubt they have. Yesterday it was used for a parent and toddler play group and today the car park is packed full of cars for what i don't know but i'd image a lot of elderly people use the facilities.

seeing as it only lives on surfaces for 9 hours, it'd be well gone by today

You'd indirectly kill more people by closing the ports and airports than you'd save from coronavirus, plus the long term economic recovery would also kill folk.

These decisions are not made lightly, and not off the back of hysteria

I don't think anyone is talking about closing airports but just flights from affected areas. Anyway please explain how it would kill so many.

HSE have confirmed it’s real after some of it’s press office initially said it was fake.

Yes I just saw that, after they initially denied it.
Is it any wonder the average person's trust in the HSE to manage this is low.

Communication is not the HSE's strong point.
The left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing on every possible level.

Can't stress this enough. Anybody who works for the HSE will know.

Yes. Press desk would be instructed to deny everything, until the memo went up to head office, was stamped approved and then sat in internal post for 24 hours before heading back to Press desk !

The epidemic rate was low but pandemic rate was 2% according to the expert. Not sure how that works but she stated it as fact.

HSE continues to fumble. This has been their recognized pattern of behaviour for years past. I’ve no doubt medical people and nursing staff will do their best but the rest is just bumbling along.

A multi-agency task force that will hit the ground running is to be established, no doubt.

Seeing as the Iranian Government has many now infected are our own Government now at risk? I refer to close relation of party leader.

Now that we know the hoax letter is real... I'm wondering was it doctored as date of practise was Saturday and surely the young person was being tested on Saturday and not attending band.... what a nightmare

My first shopping trip since the emergence of the first Irish case this morning, I was thinking about the practicalities of touching door handles, trolleys etc. Okay you can avoid touching your mouth & nose and wash your hands thoroughly when you get home, but if the virus was on any of those surfaces, you may have transferred it to to keys, laser card, shopping bags etc. Do I need to wipe down all those as well?
Medical guy on the radio saying picking it up from surfaces was a remote possibility, the real danger was person-to-person contact
