We should have stopped all flights from Italy when it became obvious it was a hot spot and they still should stop them now, we can't seal the country off but you can play the percentages.

Yes but we're discussing a situation if it becomes more widespread. In that instance we seemingly should not be concerned over the odd random infected stranger coughing near us for a few minutes?

Dublin, Belfast, Shannon, Knock, Cork, Waterford, Kerry etc. We don't have that many and even fewer ports with passenger ferry services..

How else do people get here? Swim, paraglide?

Belfast is not under the jurisdiction of the irish government, there are several ferries a day entering irish ports, that's just passenger ones never mind cargo ships.

If the St. Patrick’s Day parades are cancelled it will make the news all over the world. This will send out the signal that Ireland is a dangerous area to travel to with a high risk of infection. This in turn will lead to mass cancellations by tourists and huge losses and potential business failures in the Irish tourism industry.

Is this proportionate if our confirmed case number remains at one or even increases by a couple?

    I don’t think so.

We should definitely have the parades but closed to the public.

    Is that a second case?

Probably the same case, as it's the same age group and not too distant a part of the city from the school.

Close Irish airports for one month. All ports of entry actually. Quarantine and treat any cases here.

Your attitude of not closing anywhere is allowing the virus to continue spread

Closing airports is overkill, stopping flights from Italy fine, but not to close everything.

I have a trip planned for the end of the month and still intend on travelling. Not to Italy I might add.

Or people applaud our desire to put public health and safety first and people think "wow, ireland really care about their people. We should visit there sometime".

Oh sorry you have a holiday booked. That's important.

That guy collapsed by the phone could have been on the batter last night.

    Possibly.
However going on the batter and passing out on the street would not be that advisable in Iran.

Iran is a lot more westernized than the US propaganda would have you believe but they probably wouldn't be turning a blind eye to that extent

You obviously have no idea how logistically impossible this would be.

That letter about the band practice. This is what worries me. Its taking days for them to contact people, and by letter it seems!

Lets say one of those kids had the sniffles. It takes several days to receive a letter (assuming they even receive it). They then self isolate. Problem is, as it took so long to contact people, that person, who assumed it was just a cold, has probably spread this to other people.

    That's why it's spreading
If anyone listened to what WHO said at the live Press conference yesterday
"It's containment we are working at to BUY US TIME to save lives and limit the number of cases till an effective vaccine becomes available" He actually said THAT

WTF... .there is ONE, ONE confirmed case, who do you think you're catching it off if you travel today?

Not scaremongering to think that there are undiagnosed cases out there. It is a very realistic possibility.

Paddy's Day and Cheltenham really need to be cancelled for us to contain this! and that idiot Des Cahill saying it be a shame for the parade to be cancelled because of all the effort people have put in to the floats

Yeah I thought that was ridiculous. Nanny has passed away but at least she seen her last float. That's all she wanted.

Our friendly neighbourhood consultant (who was posting last night) believed this was the case also.

That's not my point, it's a country without a reported case.

But anyway closing airports / ports and basically stopping every day life isn't feasible based on our current numbers.

Flights to Italy should stop, but everywhere else no.

I wonder how many cases Ireland would have if they tested that amount.

It seems crazy that they are testing so few. This is before the **** hits the fan. They should be wanting to find out who has it now to at least try to stem the over load to hospitals.

Alcohol in Iran is prohibited for Iranian citizens by law since the establishment of Islamic Republic government in 1979.

And weed is illegal in Ireland. Are we really thinking prohibition works? In my line of work I have met plenty of Iranians who have admitted to having alcohol in Iran (granted they were also the type to leave and only return home for visits).

100%. Granted being locked is still a and idea in public but we don't honestly have a clue aside from some random Twitter looking for views.

I feel it is getting worst than China (and definitely worst than Korea or Italy). The government and health authorities there just have no clue about the scale of the epidemic.

UK government has put worst case scenario as 80% of the UK population infected, with a mortality rate of 1%, around 500,000 deaths.
I wonder what the most likely scenario is considered to be by them?

They're CFR is way off, even by WHO standards.. it's at least 2.3 with full medical assistance.
