Cork GP commenting on the outbreak.
“It is absolutely blown out of proportion. Less people will die in Ireland of the Coronavirus in the next three months than died in traffic accidents over the weekend. There were seven deaths on the roads over the weekend. If we have seven deaths from the Coronavirus, I will be amazed,” he told The Echo.

Bizarre exclamation from him. I was in Shenzhen when this broke mainstream news. This is no ****ing joke. China shut down their entire economy to contain the spread. All major cities are still in partial lock down. Wuhan is still in total lock down. Does he think the Chinese government are doing this for the laugh? From my time in China in January one thing is clear, the Chinese government are **** scared of this disease and have taken extraordinary measures to contain it. The company I work for are also taking this seriously and told me and everyone else who had been to mainland China to work from home for two weeks when I arrived back in early February.

I would agree there is no need to panic, one case is not anything to be overly worried about but not being worried does not mean health professionals need to run to the media with cavalier statements comparing COVID-19 to car crashes. I actually really appreciated the attitude in Shenzhen, it was one of calm but vigilance. We on the other hand seem to think there is no happy medium between nonchalance and hysteria. We have seen how Italy went from contained to Europe's Wuhan over a matter of days, that probably won't happen here but we need to take this seriously and I wish health professionals wouldn't make ridiculous comparisons to car crashes.

Did anyone reverse Google image search runaways picture? I'm on my phone and can't.

Yep, I did earlier after the hospital pic was posted. Nothing came up.

I knew someone who dIed from it, wasn't too fake for them.

I knew lots who were severely injured from the needless vaccine that resulted.
It is a fact that the CDC falsely reported most of the swine flu cases in the US in the summer of 2009.
The same CDC are one of the main sources of information for coronavirus. Go figure.

What is the point in only isolating the kids/teachers in the school if nobody else is being isolated...imagine how far its spread....trying to do the calculations earlier, in my home I've 3 kids, 2 separate schools, my job and my sons football training (not to mention to teenager daughters off galavanting) ....... football team probably has kids from 7/8 schools, you can imagine how far that's spread from just one member of my family alone!!!

lets just face it, we all have it already !

    Sure

My response was to someone who was saying we shouldn't do likewise because it was only Armenia

I'm just pointing out that Japan moved to shut their schools a while ago

Got ya. Thought you were saying Japan only closed for a week.

To contain it; not to prevent it.

That’s why they call it containment

Have to agree, and because it's in Europe it is more relevant to us here given the shortish flight times to and fro etc. More likely that a larger number of people will travel from here to there and vice versa than will travel to China, Japan, Iran etc.

I wonder how the virus embedded there so quickly, and where it originated.
    From Reddit
According to a recent paper https://arxiv.org/pdf/2002.12298.pdf if China had started its containment measures 1 week later there would now be 1 million cases there. The USA may learn this lesson soon, as Iran is probably learning it now.

Why are any country still letting flight from North Italy land,
At this stage surely it makes sense to have a travel ban from Northern Italy

Good on you, hope you feel vindicated now. No wonder the HSE is keeping information from us, we believe nothing.

I don't see any problem with a bit of light relief and/or messing, it brings a bit of interest.

    But judges gotta judge.

Not my judgement , he was a liar who was found out but if that's the sort of debate you want ....
Noone minds a bit of banter , but out and out lying is not what I want unless its ..AnotHer thread.

Feel like I'm playing Russian Roulette using public transport but it's my only way into and out of Dublin for me. Absolutely hate being crammed on the train, now it will be near intolerable with the coughing/sneezing.

And it takes 4 weeks from the 1st case to the 1st death, we've a good bit to go yet.

So I've another month in work before they close down the country?

Looking at the world meter site it would seem according to them at least that much of the spread has come from Italy then there is Iran too.

    **puts on tin foil hat**

    Iran rhymes with Wuhan

Italy starts with an I as does Iran

    Iran also rhymes with Japan

Ehhh....help me out here im certain theres a pattern

N.B. just in case anyone misinterprets my post...its total tongue in cheek

Just for anybody who wants to know about facemasks, there are generally two scales of ratings, EU and US. They are rated on their filter capacity, which is the ability to remove x% of of all particles that are 0.3 microns in diameter or larger.

    Over here we have:
    FFP1 80%
    FFP2 94%
    FFP3 99%

    In the US they have
    N95 95%
    N99 99%
    N100 99.97%

If you look at eBay and Amazon listings, you will see FFP2 and N95 often described on the one listing, as they are close equivalents and the most common for sale. You can get a FFP1 as a two pack in the likes of Dealz, so they are the lowest standard generally.

FFP2 is considered a good grade to stop a lot of the bad stuff from getting in, with healthcare professionals using the FFP3 standard is hospitals etc. Note that because of the high level of filtering in each standard, prolonged use can cause repository restrictions and have a side effect on your body. FFP3 specifically has the shortest use window before breathing difficulty's will occur.
Nailed the info there D and mentioned the most obvious if not so obvious for many aspect; the higher the filtration, the harder to breath. It could even be a basic "test" for efficacy. If you can breath normally with zero effort, like in the paper facemask, then it's not nearly so effective as more a confidence booster. If you've ever strapped on an NBC military grade actual gasmask, the difficulty in breathing is apparent from the get go.

Many worry about Artificial Intelligence. I worry far more about Organic Idiocy.

Why are any country still letting flight from North Italy land,
At this stage surely it makes sense to have a travel ban from Northern Italy
    I tend to agree.
It also makes sense to do same for flights to northern Italy.

The amount of contamination from Northern Italy really is extraordinary!!
The only thing that makes sense to me is that the virus is rampant there and much bigger than authorities are saying...
Or more effort going into testing people who've been there compared with other places.

Had such a ban been instituted, might the Irish people who returned from northern Italy have gotten a flight home from elsewhere?

Even give people coming off flights from Italy a face mask on landing and tell them to stay away from people. For a cocouple. Of weeks

    How so?
The case in the north...someone who flew back from Italy via Dublin.
The case in the south, the guy was on holiday in Italy and flew back.
    What am I missing?
Without those two people flying back from northern Italy we would have zero cases here.

All Italy flights in should be banned

Has China flights already been banned?

Surely airport restrictions has to come in to place soon

Do we know if the guy with the virus was skiing? And did anyone publish a more specific location than Northern Italy?
