Nurses are fundamental to the HSE. Nurses in Ireland can work as ANPs which means they can review treatment, prescribe, order bloods and tests etc.

Yet nurses in Ireland are not trained to a standard where they can take up the same level of responsibility that their colleagues do abroad.

CDC estimates that influenza was associated with more than 35.5 million illnesses, more than 16.5 million medical visits, 490,600 hospitalizations, and 34,200 deaths during the 2018–2019 influenza season.

Ok let's put this flu comparison to bed. We know flu and Covid19 are 2 different virus families with different mortality rates. However I asked this question before and none of the experts here answered.

Q1. Does anyone here think that the new coronavirus will kill more people worldwide than the influenza did in 2018/2019 as per the numbers above?

Not shoulda-woulda-coulda. Not possibly/can/maybe. Not different shark talk. Future tense prediction based entirely on numbers.

Q1. Does anyone here think that the new coronavirus will kill more people worldwide than the influenza did in 2018/2019 as per the numbers above?

You can use 2019/2020 flu season numbers if you wish. I know one lad predicted 45,000,000 deaths yesterday but I am not sure if that was in 1 year.

    And Q2 for those that are able to answer Q1;

Q2. Does anyone predict that the Covid19 will kill more people than flu in Ireland during 2020 or 2021?

This is not a trick. I am genuine curious what people predict.

For the record, I predict No and No for both questions.

Just back from Lidl getting a few extras for the freezer.

Not much rice/pasta/tin tomato but otherwise well stocked.

Saw 2 guys frantically filling 2 trollies with various household cleaners, tissue and black bags. They were getting a few strange looks.

Nothing to do with the virus. They're gearing up for a circlejerk world record.

Hey folks, did you know influenza kills roughly a thousand times more Americans each year than Ted Bundy did. Hysterics

How about a separate thread for folks who thinks it’s just flu, so they can talk amongst themselves about how the whole world (including the normally non-hysterical Chinese government) have completely over-reacted and we’ll all be grand

Anyone on here self-isolating at the moment?
When you may need to self-isolate:

You may need to isolate yourself from other people if, in the past 14 days, you have been to one of the affected areas and are experiencing symptoms, or have been in contact with a person who has the virus. You may also need to self-isolate if you have recently been in a healthcare centre or hospital where patients with the virus were being treated, and have developed symptoms.

    The most affected areas are:

    China
    Hong Kong
    Iran
    Japan
    Singapore
    South Korea
Italy: the affected regions of Lombardy, Piedmont, Veneto, Emilia-Romagna

    How to self-isolate:

If you have been to an affected area in the past 14 days and have a cough, fever, feel short of breath or have difficulty breathing, this is the advice:

Phone your GP, emergency department or student healthcare centre immediately. Do NOT go to your GP's surgery, ED or healthcare centre. This is so you do not accidentally put other people at risk. Your GP or doctor will tell you over the phone what to do next.
Stay at home and indoors. Do not go to work, school, religious services or public areas, and do not use public transport or taxis.
Avoid contact with other people, even if you share a house. Use the phone to communicate with other householders. If you have to go into the same room as someone else, wear a face mask. You will need to ask for help if you need groceries, other shopping or medications.
Stay in a well-ventilated room with a window that you can open. If you don't have a separate bathroom, the bathroom will need to be kept clean. Use your own towels and dispose of waste in a plastic rubbish bag which should be placed inside a second bag.
Many cleaning/disinfecant products in supermarkets work against coronaviruses. Keep all surfaces and items used regularly clean.
Do not have visitors in your home, and do not answer the door to callers. You might need to put a sign on your door saying you are not available.
Follow this advice even if your symptoms are mild.

    Which 'real sources'?

Current stats show that of the recorded 42,012 currently Infected (live) patients worldwide - 82% have a Mild Condition of the illness and 18% are deemed to be Serious or Critical.

Currently cases of coronavirus are increasing worldwide and we are only at the very beginning of the year. And yes the death rate at approx 2% is already significantly above the death rate for influenza.

It would be interesting to learn the age group of people actually contracting the virus. Lots of anecdotal reports of people aged 55+ but there seems to be less among younger people and virtually no cases of children having the virus.

Before this coronavirus came along, you'd have boardsies saying

"Call that a flu? You haven't had a flu. I had a flu a few years ago, and I literally died for three weeks. If you can move, or breathe, or think, then it's not the flu. If you ever really get a flu, you'll wish you had never been born."

Now it's just, "Pfft, it's just a bad flu, no big deal."

The flu comparison is actually getting popular. Its among adults too which is astonishing. This is genuinely worrying because these people could end up doing the stupidest actions possible when/if infected

Future tense prediction.

You can use 2019/2020 flu season numbers if you wish.

    And Q2 for those that answer Q1;

Q2. Does anyone predict that the Covid19 will kill more people than flu in Ireland during 2020 or 2021?

This is not a trick. I am genuine curious what people predict.

For the record, I predict No and No for both questions.

If the HSE/WHO/governments did not respond as they have done, and allowed this much deadlier virus to be transmitted as the flu virus is allowed to be transmitted, then almost certainly there would be more deaths. As it stands there is hope it will be contained.

Here is an idea I would rather have have food in the house I don't need instead of the slight change of been stuck in the house needing food I can't get.

Sure if it all blows over I will just eat it.

I also predict No and No, but only because I think if this gets going here we’ll see fairly draconian restrictions on movement put in place. If, as some on this thread seem to be suggesting, the world took the view that this was “just the flu” and ignored it, I would predict the answers would be Yes and Yes

Denial is one of the ways some people 'process' this. It is a sort of self preservation

And heat up over a candle

I am reminded of HSE \ Minister for Health press conferences in the run up to winter flu season also... we can't cope with flu outbreak, people are in trolleys, please get the vaccine and only attend A&E if you have to.

This time... it's like the flu, pfft ... we can handle it.

My sister was head nurse of a liver transplant unit of a leading university hospital in the US. I can assure you she was an expert in some medical fields.

My cousin’s wife, a nurse specialist, was at the forefront in Ireland when surgeons were learning liver transplant techniques. Initially they performed transplants on pigs at a section of the veterinary hospital in UCD, alongside veterinary surgeons. She worked alongside them and veterinary nurses. The priority was that no animal should suffer undue pain, so they were kept under anaesthesia all the time of recovery as the outcomes were analysed. She did overnight stints monitoring the pigs’ comfort and vital signs. All the while also taking notes about nursing the human patient equivalents.

Covid19 will always have a higher mortality rate. I believe it will infect far far fewer people.

For what it's worth (nothing), I estimate 100M fatalities from this, not counting the knock on effects.

    Rest assured, I'm usually wrong.

Seriously? 100,000,000 worldwide in 2020? That's a step up from the 45,000,000 I read yesterday.

You're the first Yes/Yes. I admire your honesty.

Seriously? 100,000,000 worldwide in 2020? That's a step up from the 45,000,000 I read yesterday.

Say, half of the population gets infected.
Perhaps, the overall cfr is around 3pc.

We can expect the 3pc cfr to be an over estimate of the true mortality rate.

We can also expect it to be an under estimate of outcomes in the context of overwhelmed health systems, especially in poorer nations.

We can expect a large proportion of the population to be infected. Not all countries can impose the Chinese regime of lock down. Consider poor governance in regions of conflict.

And that's without the knock on effects.

Here are the current stats by age for death

    3r1x52.jpg

That said any age group can become infected. Those with existing conditions are found in all age groups.
Experts estimate that up to 60% of the worlds population could potentially contract the illness

Young children (under 9 years) of age can also contract the Virus. Some of these children were found to have suffered complications such as lung damage. However there have been no recorded deaths in this age group to date.

Sorry if this link has already been posted. Very interesting article by an expert on global epidemics, Dr Jonathan Quick . Unfortunately he is not overly optimistic that the world will manage to contain this outbreak. Very level headed about possible responses though.
