Healthcare workers' attitudes to working during pandemic influenza

Perceived barriers to the ability to work included being ill oneself, transport difficulties, and childcare responsibilities. Perceived barriers to the willingness to work included: prioritising the wellbeing of family members; a lack of trust in, and goodwill towards, the NHS; a lack of information about the risks and what is expected of them during the crisis; fear of litigation; and the feeling that employers do not take the needs of staff seriously. Barriers to ability and barriers to willingness, however, are difficult to separate out.

    Conclusion
Although our participants tended to feel a general obligation to work during an influenza pandemic, there are barriers to working, which, if generalisable, may significantly reduce the NHS workforce during a pandemic. The barriers identified are both barriers to willingness and to ability. This suggests that pandemic planning needs to take into account the possibility that staff may be absent for reasons beyond those currently anticipated in UK planning documents. In particular, staff who are physically able to attend work may nonetheless be unwilling to do so. Although there are some barriers that cannot be mitigated by employers (such as illness, transport infrastructure etc.), there are a number of remedial steps that can be taken to lesson the impact of others (providing accommodation, building reciprocity, provision of information and guidance etc). We suggest that barriers to working lie along an ability/willingness continuum, and that absenteeism may be reduced by taking steps to prevent barriers to willingness becoming perceived barriers to ability.

The NDA breach would be the missus herself. But I'm sure she would have expected to be able to trust her husband.

I'm just sharing, I've been following these threads and thought people might like to know.

I think we've a right to transparency as well.

Anyway, it might not even come to light but no harm in being aware.

You hope it's fake news that the government are considering drastic measures that will protect children?

It's inevitable. Most of which will end up in the bin.

Wife working at the crisis centre has just informed me that there is big potential for government building and school closures next week, they are going to make a call today.

They are currently monitoring a number of potential cases, fearing that the rate of spread in Dublin is fairly substantial.

    Hope everything will be ok.

Given what is viewed on thread as massive inaction by the government over last week, it'd be quite the turnaround to shut up the whole shop over 1 confirmed case.

A case of COVID-19 has now been identified in the Rep of Ireland. The person is receiving treatment in hospital, with appropriate infection prevention measures. The risk to the general public is still low. This risk may change. People may continue to go to work, school, as usual.

Couldn't find hand sanitizer anywhere in the shops. Have an awful habit of buying travel sized hand sanitizers and never using it. Found a few bottles of them with 62% alcohol. Should this help me if I'm using public transport, after touching door handles in public places and anytime I can't wash my hands?

I think it's the unconfirmed cases being monitored that has raised concerns.

It'll be an interesting week ahead anyway, regardless of what they do.

No; I support such measures, but start by halting flights from Milan and advising all those schools with students returning from skiing to self quarantine first.

I wonder would they try to wait for Easter, they could close the schools a week early and you would have a 3 week break?

    I'm not saying I don't believe you...but...
What is her role at the crisis centre?
I have a friend who is high up in the department of the taoiseach and zero mention there of closures next week

I would be very surprised if any closures like that next week, if things get a lot worse definitely a possibility following weeks

Its matter of time before we close down however. Lets be realistic, every country has had exponential growth after one case. We had flights from everywhere to Dublin in the last number of weeks. We might get this week to resume normality but I would be very surprised if two weeks from now their are not restrictions in place.

i think normal soap and water for 30 seconds is as effective as anything else,
